JOHN L. NISLSON AND OLOF'G. NILSON, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SAFETY-RAZOR To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN L. NILsoN and OLoF G. NILsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Chicago, in' the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Safety-Razors, of which the following 1s a specification.
Our invention relates to safety razors and its object is to provide means for imparting to the hand-operated type of this type of razor the saw or endwise draw movement and to improve. the construction and arrangement of the blade-holding portlon of the device.
With this object in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter holder 7 are bores 10 and 11 section described in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and incorporated 1n the appended claims.
In the drawing-Figure 1 is a perspective viewT of a safety razor embodying our. in-v vention with parts of fingers of the right and left hands showing the manner in which a blade is released or inserted. Fig. 2 is a section taken substantially on line 2 2 on Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the razor. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with .part of the handle broken away, showing the blade-,holding clamp open` or the blade released. Fig. 5 is a section taken -substantially on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a taken substantially on line 6 6 on Fig. 2.
In the several views 2 represents a forklike frame and 3 is a handle having thereon a stud 4 which is iXedly secured in a-bore in said frame and has a projecting end von which is mounted an anti-friction roller 5 which engages a slot 6 in the rear portion of a reciprocating blade-holder or razor'head 7 supported on said lroller and on a pair of pins 8 and 9 secured to and projecting inwardly from the fork-members of ithe frame or support 2. In the ends or sides, of the l v which engage the pins 8 and 9 loosely to permit movement on said pins. The blade-holder may be a single piece of metal bent seven times to form two nearly alike and relatively movable parts 12 and 13 overlying each other and terminating in jaws 14 and' 15 between which the razor-blade, 1 6, is held'.v For the purpose of illustrating the parts the mem- I Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 23,1914. Serial No. 826,598.
bers 12 and 13 are shown as two separate pieces secured together by means of screwsv or rivets 17 and 18, each member then being a plate of metal bent'three times as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 4, the slot 6 being formed inthe vertical portions of these members which are secured together by the screws 17 and 18.y 'Through top of the holder 9 are bored vholes 19 which lighten it 'and facilitates its cleaning. Its members 12 and 13 are made of spring metal and arranged to leave a space 20 (Fig. 4) between the jaws 14 and 15. These jawslare clamped together upon the blade l16 by means of a cam-lever 21 mounted in a slot 22 and` having a widened portion 23 between the members 12 andi 13 which, when rotated at lright angles to their sides, forces them apart thereby drawing ytogether the jaws 14 and 15y as in Fig. 2 which shows the looked position of the lever whereas Fig. 4.shows its released position.
The guard of the razor is a roller 24 journaled on needle-point bearing-ends of the pins 8 and 9 which preferably have threadmember 3 whereby they are made adjustable. Thus the roller 24 rotates on the ends of 'ed engagement with threaded bores in. the
the pins while the holder 7 slides back and forth on them. The sliding movement is caused by a cam-.slot 25 in the periphery of the roller and a small wheel 26 secured to a shaft 27 having point bearings in coneshaped apertures in screws `.28 and 29 having threaded engagement with bores in the sides of the holder 7. The periphery of the roller maybe suitably knurled or'indentedby, slots to increase its friction-hold upon the face of the user when this is deemed necessary. j However theresistance offered to the rotation of this rolleris so comparatively slight that a smooth roller may answer the purpose just as well. In Fig. 1
,31 and 32 may represent foreinger and '100 16, while 33 represents the thumb ofthe l thumb of the.,left hand holdingthe-blade right hand pressing up to close the jaws, or pressing down to open the jaws, on the lever 21, 34 and 35 being two right hand lingers coperating with the-thumb in holding` the handle 3. As shown in Fig. 3 theends of the blade 16 project slightly beyond the sides i of the holder, which facilitateslthe adjustment of the blade between the jaws.
In operation the drawing of the roller- 11 guard over the face causes' the` razor bladeW to reciprocate endwise in a sawing motion,
thusmaking the shaving smooth and'easy and making it possible to shavewith a comparatively dull blade. Skill from practice is necessary to operate an ordinary razorblade properly, and the present invention is designedto 'effect the combined movements automatically.
' Having thus described our invention We claim as new and desire to secure byLetters Patent- 1. In a safety razor, the combination of a razor head consisting of substantially a single piece of metal bent ,to form a roller-con- "taining head having (zo-acting parts which are blade-holding jaws,v axial supports for a roller guardupon which said head is reciprocally movable, a handle for said axial supports, 'a lever actuatingv said jaws, and
means for reciprocating said head.
2. ln a safety razor, the combination of a blade-holder with a frame provided with a handle, said holder consisting of two relatively movable members which are bladeholding jaws and a roller-guard housing, the roller-guard within said housing, axial supg ports for said roller-guard, means :for actuating said jaws, and means for reciprocating said holder.
'In testimony whereof we havehereunto set our hands in the presence of two sub-
