Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentedmari 3th fltllildr @riginal application filed April 17, 1909, serial No. t90,5%. Divided and this application filed September To all whom it may concern:
Be it mown that l, HAROLD ll. Sunnis, of-
lltochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razors; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference numerals marked thereon,
The'present invention relates to razors the subject matterof this applicatlon having been divided from an application. filed by me on April 17, 1909, Serial No. 490,564.
The object of this invention is to prov de a safety razor of simple construction having provision for stropping its blade wlthout removing the latter from the holder which supports it during shaving.
To these and other ends the invention con-- sists in certain improvements and combina-v tions of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
in the drawings: Figure l shows an enlarged transverse section of one embodiment of the razor; with the parts in shaving position; Fig. 2 shows the same embodiment 1n an enlarged section longitudinally of the blade holder; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the razor with the parts in position for stropping,
in the illustrated embodiment there is provided a blade holder comprising a supporting member or plate l having blade positioning means or pins 2 PITOjBOlilIl upwardly therefrom to pass through per oratlons in a blade 3 which may have two longitudinally extending cutting edges, the blade being held to the supporting plate by any suitable retaining means. ln this instance the member or plate 4 engages the blade between its two cutting edges and is pivoted at one end as at 15 to the supporting member toturn about an anis transverse to the cutting edges of the blade, its other end being secured b a spring latch 6 preferably integral wit plate 4t and adapted to cooperate with the walls of a recess or opening 'l in a. proximate portion of the radar."
'lhe blade holder may be supported away i from its central portion so that a strap or other sharpener may engage the ag- Serial No. 519,218.
a knurled end 12, the core being surrounded by a grip portion or sleeve 13. Preferably the handle is secured to the frame to one side of the longitudinal axis or length of a blade in the holden To this end the frame has means permitting the handle to be secured thereto so as to lie perpendicular to the length of the blade and also has ineans permitting the handle to be secured thereto so as to lie parallel with the blade. These means are in this instance in'the form. of screw threaded portions 14 and iii adated to be engaged by the threaded. end ll or the handle. When the handle is secured to the threaded portion ll the grip portion 13 is engaged by a log or projection 16 which enters a notch in the grip portion and prevents the turning of the latter, time permitting the handle to be utilized for operating the razor for shaving or stropping. @n the other hand when the handle engages the threaded portion 15 the grip is free to rotate so that the blade holder may roch:
relatively thereto.
holder-with a double edged blade therein is caused to rest on astrop as shown in Fig. ll
the handle grip will lie below or to one side of the plane of the blade so that the hand'of the user in moving the device baclr and forth a over the strep will cause theopposite edges of the 'blade to shift alternately and ante-- matically intoand out of cooperation with the strop. @f course the blade edges are stropp'ed only on one side, but the other side may be stropped by reversing the po tionof the blade in the'holder. i
The edges of the blade are preferably PM tected by two guards it? formed along opposite edges of a guard frame 18" and each adapted to eodperate with an edge of a blade in the holder. anathema its guards it wearable relat yely' the'blade' lid lflltl Mill lllll holder in order to permit a blade in. the latter to be engaged by a strop. In this instance the guard frame is entirely detachable from the other parts of the razor and for this purpose has interlocking engagement at one end with the frame 8 as by a notch or recess 19 in the latter receiving a projection 20 on the guard frame, while at the other end the guard frame carries a spring latch 21 having a deflected end 22 adapted to enter an opening 23 1n the plate to coiiperate with the inclined wall 24 of the latter. When the latch is in engagement with the blade holder it tends to move the guard frame'toward the other end of the blade, thus firmly holding the guard frame against the frame 8 to prevent v1- brations during shaving. A pressure on the latch in the direction of the length of the guard frame will move the deflected end 22 so that it may enter or pass from the opening 28, while a pressure downwardly on projection 25 at the end'of the guard frame will carry the end 22 out of 25 engagement with the wall 24. After the latch has been released from engagement with the blade holder, the guard frame may be disengaged from the frame 8 to expose both edges of the blade. The blade may now be brought to a strop or other sharpener or the handle may be .first shifted to the threaded portion 15. In either instance the holder may be caused to rock so as to present alternately opposite edges of the blade to the sharpener.
With a razor constructed in accordance with this invention the blade 7 may be quickly stropped in the helder which is em-. ployed for supporting the blade during shaving and the adjustments necessary to secure these results are few and simple. The blade is rigidly held to the supporting frame so it is possible to secure any pressure on its edges tha-t may be desirable. $5 I claim as my invention:
1. In a safet razor, the combination with a double-edged blade, ing member for sup ortin the doubleedged blade to expose both e ges, of a ban- 0 dle having a connection with the'supporting member atone end only and symmetrica y arranged with relation to op osite sides of the member, a pair of guar for I 005 eration with the eriposed edges of the bla e, means for permitting the movement of the guards relatively to the supporting member and .to the handle to carry the guards away from the double-edged blade while the latter is clamped to the blade sup:
W porting. member, and the blade to the bl said means being edective as clamping means when the wards are moved away from the su -means for clamping porting member.
