Figure 1 represents a front View of the upper portion of the lantern, showing the canopy slightly swung up clear of the guard. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 0 is, Fig. 1, showing the canopy closed.

This invention relates to a new style of fastening for a swinging-lantern canopy; and has for its object to simplify the construction and thereby reduce the expense of said fastening. The invention consists in forming an eye or loop on the upper guard-hook, and projecting it through an aperture in the flange of the canopy, where it receives the pivoted fastening-hook.
A similar fastening was heretofore produced by forming the eye or loop on one of the upright guard-ribs, and projecting it through the canopy in the same aforesaid manner 5 but this required a peculiar and careful arrangement of the upper part of said rib, and thereby made the lantern more costly than when the loop is directly formed on the upper hoop.
A in the drawing represents the upper hoop of the lantern-guard, secured to the upright guard-ribs B B in the 'ordinary 0r suitable manner. 0 is the canopy of the lantern. It is hinged to the hoop A at one side, and has a pivoted hook or latch, a, at the other side, whereby it can be fastened to the hoop when closed down. I) is a loop or eye formed on the hoop A by bending the same up, as in Fig. 1. This loop is projected through an orifice in the flange d of the canopy, and receives the fasteninghook, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The guardhoop A, provided with the loop I), which is fitted through the flange of the canopy for the purpose of receiving the fastening-hook, as set forth.
