Be it known that I, HENRY 1; Rooms, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort F airfield, inthe county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Pans and Aprons for Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to furnaces and more particularly to the base or pit, the

purpose being to insure the delivery of the ashes, cinders and the like into an ash-pan, thereby avoiding the necessity of having to shovel the ashes from the pit which operation is prolific of scattering dust besides requiring the stooping or bending of the operator when manipulating the shovel and which operation is objectionable and inconvenient.

In accordance with the present invention the base or ash pit of a furnace is provided with an ash pan the back of which is designed to snugly fit the back of the ash pit to insure delivery of the ashes into the pan.

The invention also consists of aprons or deflectors located along the sides of the base or ash-pit and disposed to overhang the sides of the ash-pan thereby directing the ashes from the grate into the pan and preventing the ashes from accumulating in the spaces between the sides of the pan and the side walls of the base or pit.

The invention, furthermore, consists of mountings of novel form for attaching the aprons or deflectors to the base, said mount-- ings admitting of the aprons being easily placed in position and quickly removed as,

occasion may require.

With these and other objects in view,

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention as claimed may be resorted to when desired.

Referring to the drawings,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a furnace having its base or ash-pit provided with an ash-pan and aprons embodying the invention, a portion of. the furnace and base being broken away to show more clearly the relation of the parts. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the asl1-pa11,' one of the aprons or deflectors, together with the mountingstherefor and a portionof the grate and grate-rest. Fig. 8 is an enlarged. transverse section of the base or ash-pit. The numeral 1 designates a furnace of any make or type provided with a base or ash-pit 2, the same being provided with a grate 3 of any type and a grate-rest 4:, the

latter being secured to the base or ash-pit 2 in any weir known manner. As indicated in Fig. l the back of the base or ash-pit is made rounding, such form b61119, usual. An apron or deflector 5 extends along each side of the 1 base or ash-pit with its lower portion inclinaprons or deflectorso and part way over thegrate rest 45, thereby causing the ashes to drop upon the aprons which latter deflect the ashes inward andscause them to fall into the pan 6. The inwardly extending ledge 7 may be provided in any well known way. The aprons or deflectors 5 consist of sheet metal plates which may be of any length and width. The inner or rear ends of the aprons 5 are curved to conform to the rear wall of the ashpit or base 2 so as to obtain a closefit therewith. The front ends of the aprons terminate about in the plane of the front wall of theash-pit or base. The upper longitudinal portion of each apron or de flector 5 comprises a vertical portion 8 and a horizontal portion 9, the same being formed by bending the upper edge portion of the plate. The vertical portion 8 of the apron extends along the outer edge of the longitudinal portion of the grate rest 1 and the horizontal portion 9 is disposed beneath the ledge 7 and comes close against the inner wall of the ash-pit or base.

Each of the aprons is retained in place by suitable m'ountings usually two being employed in connection with each apron. These mountings are preferably formed of sheet metal of proper gage and each of the mountings comprises a horizontal portion 10, an inclined portion 11, a vertical portion 12 and oppositely extending wings conjunction with the part 10 serves to space the apron from the side Wall of the pit or base. The wing 13 extends over the grate rest 1, thereby retaining the apron in position and admittingof the same being easily removed when required.

The ash-pan 6 is of a length corresponding to the length ofthe ash-pit and its rear wall 15 'is inclined and .made rounding so as to conform to the rear curved wall of the ash-pit or base. A handle 16 is pivotally connected to the rear inclined wall 15 of the ash-pan and serves in conjunction with the handle 17 attached to the front of the ashpan as convenient means for carrying the pan when ladened with ashes. The ash-pan is of a width less than the distance between the longitudinal side walls of the ash-pit or base so as to slide freely through the usual door leading into the front of the ash-pit. l/Vhen the ash-pan is slid into position into the ash-pit it occupies a central position and comes beneath the innerlower edge portions of the aprons or deflectors 5 which overhang side portions of the ash-pan a distance to insure thedelivery of the ashes into the pan and thereby prevent the discharge of the ashes into the spaces formed between the sides of the ash-pan and the side walls of the ash-pit.

It will be understood from the foregoing taken in connection with the accompanying drawings that the invention provides means whereby the ashes of a furnace are dis- Copies of this patent may be obtained for charged into a pan, thereby enabling such ashes to be removed from the ash-pit or base without causing dust or the inconvenience and annoyance incident to shoveling the ashes from the pit into a scuttle or other receptacle.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. An ash-pit provided with a grate rest, longitudinally disposed aprons at the sides of the ash-pit inclining inwardly and downwardly toward their lower edges, and mountings secured to the aprons and having portions extending over the grate rest and other portions projecting outwardly to engage the side walls of the pit and space the aprons .therefroln.

2. In an ash-pit, oppositely disposed longitudinal aprons inclining inwardly and downwardly toward their lower edges, and mountings attached to the upper portions of the aprons and having upper and lower outwardly directed portions engaging the side walls of the pit to properly support and space the said aprons therefrom.

3. An ash-pit having an inwardly extending ledge, a grate rest disposed with the inner portion of the ledge extending thereover, oppositely disposed aprons having their lower portions extending inwardly and downwardly and mountings for such aprons attached thereto and comprising upper and lower outwardly extending portions to properly support and space the aprons and embodying inwardly extending portions to overlap the grate rest.

In combination, an ash-pit, a grate rest disposed within the upper portion of the ash pit, oppositely disposed aprons comprising lower portions inclining inwardly and downwardly and upper portions embodying vertical and lateral parts, the vertical parts of the apron extending along the outer edges of the grate rest and the lateral parts extending outwardly and e11- gaging the side walls of the ash-pit, and mountings for the aprons, each comprising an inclined portion, a vertical portion, upper and lower outwardly extending portions and an inner extension to overlap the grate rest.
