To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, LINCOLN E. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of lndiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Headlights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dirigible head lights and has particular application to a manually controlled head light for use on inter-urban. railway cars and the like.
1n carrying out the present invention, it is my purpose to provide a dirigible head light for railway cars whereby the beams of light may be caused to follow a curve irrespective of the position of the body of the car, thereby illuminating the curvepso that any obstructions thereon will be visible.
It is also my purpose to provide a dirigible head light controlling mechanism which may be installed in any railway car without necessitating material changes in the con struction of the car and which will operate efliciently. and effectively under all conditions.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claims.
1n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view through the platform of a street railway car showing my invention installed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the car and head light thereon. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the supporting frame for the head light. Fig. il: is a view in side elevation of the operating mechanism for the headlight; and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view on the line Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates the front board of a' railway car formed, upon one side of the vertical center line thereof, with an opening 2.
Suitably fastened to the front board 1 of the car are brackets L1, 4 spaced apart and disposed at opposite sides of the vertical center line of the board.
5 designates an arcuate shaped bar having the end portions thereof provided with depending pins 6, 6 designed to fit into the brackets l, 1 respectively, so as to hold the bar 5 in a horizontal position, the central portion of the bar 5 being bowed outwardly from the board.
7, 7 designate verticalposts having the upper ends thereof secured to the bar 5 adjacent to the extremities of the latter and the lower ends connected with a horizontally disposed arcuate shaped bar 8 having the opposite end thereof bearing against the adjacent portion of the car body, the central portion of the bar 8 being bowed outwardly. By means of this construction it will be seen that the bars 5 and S and the rods 7 constitute a movable frame that is detachably connected with the car body and that may be removed therefrom at will.
Formed in the outwardly bowed portions of the bars 5 and 8 are vertically alining openings 11 and journaled in the openings 11 are axially alining trunnions 12 disposed upon the top and bottom edges respectively of a base plate 13. This base plate 13 is provided with suitable holding means to carry the head light 14. Secured to one edge of the base plate 13 and extending laterally therefrom is a pivot ear 15 and pivotally connected to the ear 15 is one end of a horizontal rod 16 working within the opening 2 in the fronteboard 3. Fastened to the inner side of the front board 1 of the car above the opening 2 therein is a bracket 16, and secured to the upper extremity of the bracket 16 is a quadrant-shaped bar 17 having one side thereof formed with notches 18. Pivoted upon the bracket 16 below the bar 17 and at the center of the arc of the quadrant is a lever 19 working over the notched face of the quadrant and provided with a tooth 2O adapted to enter the adjacent notch in the quadrant to hold the lever in the desired adjusted position. The lower end of the lever is pivotally connected with the rod 16, as at 21.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. 1When it is desired to swing the head light so as to throw the rays of light therefrom onto the rails of the trackway when rounding a curve, the handle end of the lever 19 is grasped and the lever swung about its fulcrum to the desired position. 1n this movement of the lever the rod 16 is slid and in sliding transmits a swinging motion to the base plate 13 thereby moving the head light.
I claim 1. 1n a dirigible head light for railway cars, a frame carried by the front wall of the car and comprising. horizontally disposed arcuate shaped bars spaced apart in parallelism and having the central portions thereof bowed outwardly of the front wall of the car and formed with vertically alining openings, a base plate, trunnions on the top and bottom respectively of said plate journaled in the openings in said bars whereby the plate may be swung about a vertical axis, a lamp carried by said plate, and means for swinging said plate.
2. In a dirigible head light for railway cars, a frame carried by the front wall of f the car and comprising horizontally-dis posed Varcuate shaped bars spaced apart in parallelism and having the central portions thereof bowed outwardly of the front wall of the car and formed with vertically alining openings, a base plate, trunnions on the top and bottom respectively of said plate journaled in the openings in said bars whereby the plate may be swung about a vertical axis, a lamp carried by said plate, means for swinging said plate, and a detachable connection between one of said bars and the front wall of the car.
