13e it known that I, IIEN nv LUnDINGIIAUs, Jr., a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have inventeda certain new and useful Improvement in Dumpw ing-Vagons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, Vsuch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same'.
This invention relates to dumping wagons, and has for itsinain object to provide a dumping wagon of novel design whose body is composed of a pair of longitudinal divided sections, one or both` of which are adapted lto be moved upwardly so as to discharge the load through the space formed between said sections whenthey Vare separated or moved apart;
Another object is to provide a dumping wagon of the character described that com prises a novel means of simple construction for actuating the movable sections of the body and for securely holding said sections closed; And still another object is to provide a serviceable and inexpensive dumping wagon which is of such design that it can be used successfully for conveying a substance which is of a more or less liquid character. Other objects and desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.

In the form of my invention herein shown the two sections 1 are supported by a shaft 2 that extends longitudinally of the body and which is carried by uprights on the frame A of the wagon. Any suitable kind of uprights may be used for supporting the shaft 2, but I prefer to use upriglits 3 that are substantially inverted V-shaped and each of which is formed from a bar of iron that is bent to form a bearing 3 at the upper end of the support or upright in which-the shaft 2 is rotatably mounted. At the lower end of the diverging legs of the upright are laterally projecting flanges 3l" which are secured to the end sill 4 of the frame A, it, of course, being understood that each end sill of the frame is provided with an upright 3 so as to firmly support the opposite ends of the shaft 2a'iid hold said shaft in a hori- Zontal position. v
Thetwo sections 1 of the body are suspended from the shaft 2 by means of hang` ers 5 secured to' the ends of said sections at the inner upper edges ofsame, as shown in Fig.` 3, thereby enabling the sections 1 to be swung'upwardly about the shaft 2 as an anis, so as to discharge the load through' the space formed by separating said sections, as shown in Fig; 2. Any suitable means may be employed for raising and lowering the sections 1 of the body, and while I prefer to use an operat# ing mechanism of substantiallythe construction herein shown on account of its strength, simplicity and efficiency, I wish it to be underst'ood that it is i1n1`naterial, so-far as iny invention is concerned, what particular means isemployed for operating the` sections 1 of the body so as to discharge the load and to restore said sections to their normal closed position. The operating mechanism of the construction herein shown consists of two winding shafts 6 that are rotatably mounted in bearings 7 on the end sills f1` of the frame A of the wagon, sets of chains or other suitable flexible members 8 and 8 connected to i and securely lock them in their closed position.
. The means herein illustrated for rotating the winding shafts 6v consists of a sprocket chain 9 that passes around sprocket wheels 10 on the winding shafts 6 and also around a sprocket wheel 1l on one end of the horizontally-disposed shaft 2 that sustains the two sections of the body, said shaft 2 being provided at one end with a hand wheel 12, so as to enable it to be rotated lirst in one direction, to raise the sections 1 of the body, and then in the opposite direction, to lower said sections.
A locking device consisting of a pivotally mounted pawl 13 on the upright 3 and a cooperating ratchet wheel 1i on the shaft 2 serve to prevent accidental retrograde movement of the shaft 2, after said shaft has been rotated in the direction to raise the sections 1 of the body. Y
Vhen the sections 1 of the body are in their normal closed position gravity and the pull that the chains 8a exert on said sections prevent them from opening` accidentally.
The body B may be formed of any suitable material and may be ofany preferred construction. I prefer, however7 to provide each section 1 of the body with an iron frame, preferably formed from strips of angle iron, so as to produce an exceptionally strong and rigid frame at a low cost. The end walls 15 of the sections 1 and the curved bottom and side wall 16 of each of said sections are preferably arranged on the inside of said frame so that they will be supported by the flanges thereof. In the wagon herein shown the curved bottom and side wall 16 of each section of the body is formed from narrow tongue and grooveboards, but it will, of course, be understood that this wall could be formed from sheets of metal.
'In order to insure tight joints between the meeting edges of the sections 1, and thus enable the wagon to be used for conveying substances of a more or lessliquid character, I have provided the lower edge and the end walls of one section of the body with a rib 17 that lits into a groove 18 on the lower edge and the end walls of the other section, said rib being formed by narrow strips secured to the angle iron frame of one of the sections, and said groove being formed by pieces of channel iron secured to the angle iron frame of the other section in the manner illustrated in Fig. 2. The intermediate portion of the body B can be reinforced and strengthened by means of braces 19 whose outer ends are connected to the top members of the frames of the sections 1 of the body and whose inner ends are connected to the horizontally disposed shaft 2, as for example, by being bent around said shaft. If desired, the body B can be provided with a cover of any preferred design,
so as to protect the contents of the body or prevent odors from escaping from the body when the wagon is used for conveying garbage. The wagon herein illustrated is provided with a sectional cover formed from metal plates 20 that rest upon the cross braces 19 and the top flanges of the angle iron frames of the sections 1 and whose inner edges are hinged to the suspending shaft 2, as, for example, by means of bearings 20, through which the shaft 2 passes.
A wagon of the construction above described is more eli'icient than the dumping wagons now in general use, owing to the fact that the load is discharged therefrom by moving the two sections of the body upwardly into such a position that they do not obstruct the free discharge of the load, nor do they come in contact with a discharged load when they are restored to their normal closed position. The curved form of the body and the way in which the sections of the body are mounted insure a rapid discharge of the entire load, and also enables the sections of the body to be raised and lowered easily. In addition to the desirable features of the invention above mentioned, such a wagon is exceptionally strong and rigid and it can be manufactured at a low cost.
While I prefer to raise both sections of the body to discharge the load, I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to such a construction, for my broad idea consists in a body for dumping wagons composed of two longitudinally divided sections having curved or inclined floors and either or both of which sections are adapted to be moved upwardly so as to form a space between said sections through which the load can escape.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A dumping wagon provided with a body ofsubstantially semi-cylindrical shape in cross section composed of two longitudinally divided portions which are so arranged that they can be swung upwardly about a common horizontal axis so as to discharge the load, a horizontally disposed shaft that sustains said sections, winding shafts operatively connected to said sections so as to raise and lower same, and means for transmitting movement from said horizontally disposed sustaining shaft to said winding shafts.
2. A dumping wagon provided with a body of substantially semi-cylindrical shape in cross section composed of two longitudi; nally divided portions which are so arranged that they can be swung upwardly about a common horizontal axis so as to discharge the load, a horizontallydisposed shaft that sustains said sections, winding shafts operatively connected to said sections so as to raise and lower same, alining sprocket wheels mounted on said horizontally disposed sustaining shaft and on said winding shafts, and a sprocket chain that engages all of said sprocket wheels.
3. A dumping wagon provided with a body of substantially semi-cylindrical shape in cross section composed of two longitudinally divided portions which are so arranged that they can be swung upwardly about a common horizontal axis so as to discharge the load, a horizontally-disposed shaft that sustains said sections, winding shafts operatively connected to said sections so as to raise and lower same, means for transmitting movement from said horizontally-disposed sustaining shaft to said winding shafts, and means on said sustaining shaft for locking the same' against rotation in one direction.

In a dumping wagon, aframe provided with a pair of transverse end sills, uprights arranged intermediate the ends of said end sills and provided with bearings at their upper ends, a supporting shaft journaled in said bearings, bearings arranged adjacent the ends of said end sills, a pair of winding shafts extending from sill to sill and journaled in said last mentioned bearings, abody comprising a pair of longitudinally-extending, curved sections that are pivotally mounted on said supporting shaft, connecting means between said body sections and said winding shafts, connecting means be tween said winding shafts and said supporting shaft, means for rotating said supporting shaft so as to separate said body sections, and means for locking said supporting shaft against rotation in one direction. ln testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this tWenty-lifth day of February 1915.
