To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, Louis J. BAUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nozzles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to'an improved nozzle, and one in which the nozzle can be quickly changed from one that delivers a solid stream to one that sends a spray, and is further adjustable so as to vary the volume of the water or other liquid that comes from the nozzle, both when the device is used as a spray nozzle or when it emits a solid stream. The device for changing the character of the stream of water is also adapted for use as a valve for entirely shutting off the nozzle.
The nozzle is adapted for use as a fire nozzle, or it can be made of a size to be fitted to garden hose and the like, and is further adapted to be used where a coarse or fine spray is needed on coating surfaces with calcimine, paints and similar materials.
The device is adapted to be used with liquids that are somewhat thick without danger of clogging the nozzle, since there are few parts that are movable.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of the nozzle with the outer end shown in section to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of the cap used in the invention. Fi g. 3 is a section through the cap looking toward the front. Fig. 1 is an end view of the cap from the front, and Fig. 5 is a detail section showing a means for adjusting a rotating plate in different positions.
The device embraces a nozzle proper or body portion 10 which is adapted to be screwed at its end 11 onto the coupling of a hose and is provided at its outer end with an eccentrically placed outlet 12. Rotatably arranged on the outer end of the nozzle is a cap 13 which is provided with an opening 1 1 which can be swung as the cap is turned to be brought in and out of register with the outlet 12 of the nozzle proper. It will thus be seen that when the hole 14 is in register with the outlet 12, a solid stream can issue from the nozzle. When the hole 14.- is placed out of register with the outlet 12 by turning the cap, a spray will be the result. The amount of spray varies as to the distance the hole is swung from the outlet 12. The preferred manner of fastening the cap to the body portion of the nozzle is to make them both screw-threaded and thus screw the cap on the nozzle. I prefer to place an extension 15 on the cap, the extension having a set screw 16 by means of which the cap can be fastened against accidental turning if the force of the stream is great. Under normal conditions, however, the set-screw 16 can be left unscrewed to permit quick changes of the cap on the nozzle. A plate 17 is mounted on the end of the cap 13 and is fastened to a pin-18 which is provided with a handle 19 for its manipulation. The plate 17 is pro vided with perforations 20 which are of various sizes and which are concentric with the pin 18 in the cap 13 so that difierent sized outlets can be swung over the opening 14 to vary the size of the stream, both when it is solid and when it is arranged to form a spray. I prefer to leave enough of the plate 17 without perforations to cover the opening 1 1, and when so arranged, the cap can be screwed down on the end of the nozzle and used as a shut-off so as to prevent the issuing of any liquid from the nozzle.
When the nozzle is in use and the opening 141 has been placed in its proper relation to the outlet 12 to bring about the stream desired, whether solid or spray, and the volume of the stream is to be changed, the finger-piece 19 is turned to bring the required opening opposite the opening 14; and the volume of the stream is correspondingly changed. If desired 1 may equip the plate 17 with a device shown in Fig. 5 in which case a boss 21 on the cap 13 is provided with notches A spring finger 23 is secured on the pin 18, and when the finger-piece 19 is turned, the position at which the fingerpiece is set is held by reason of the spring finger engaging one of the serrations or depressions 22.
Having thus described my invention, what 1 claim is A nozzle comprising a body portion havin g at one end an eccentrically arranged outlet, a cap rotating on the end of the nozzle let opening of the nozzle, a plate on the inside of the end of the cap, the plate having a series of'openings, a pin on Which said plate is fixedly mounted With the series of openings concentrically arranged about said plate, a notched boss on said cap, a spring fingeron the pin which is adapted to engage the notches in the boss, and a fingerpiece on the pin to provide for its rotation to bring the openings of the plate successlvely into register With the openings of the cap.
