To all whom it may concern.
*Be it known that 1, JOHN E. OsLUND, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Universal Test-Indicator, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more especially to that class of devices above named, and an object of my invention, among others, is the Iproduction of such an indicator that shall e extremely convenient in use, simple in construction and accurate in operation.
, which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of an indicator embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view partially in lengthwise central section through my improved indicator showing the construction of parts. Fig. 3flis a view in cross section through the same on plane denoted by dotted line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 6 denotes the body of the indicator having a handle 7 extending from one edge thereof and with a recess 8 located therein. A quill 9 is secured to one edge of the body, preferably in a screw threaded socket 10 therein and a needle 11 extends through this quill, projecting at each end thereof, and extending at one end into the recess 8. The quill 9 has a spring chamber 12 slightly larger in diameter than the opening which receives the needle 11. An enlargement 13 "ls formed on the needle, resting against the bottom of the chamber 12 to prevent outward movement of the needle, and a spring 14 presses against said enlargement and against the end wall 15 of the spring cham- Y her.
A shoulder, in the construction shown formed by a head 16, at the end of the needle plate. Arms 23 project outwardly from the plate and serve as a support for an indicating bar 24 thatis preferably secured at its ends between the arms 23. This bar is preferably round in cross section and is provided with graduations to determine the degree of movement ofthe hand or pointer 20,,the indicating end 25 .of this hand or pointer being preferably circular or ring shapedand surrounding the bar 24:. Said graduations preferablv extend entirelv around the box and have numerals or other indicating characters 26 located at various points around the bar for determining the position of the hand or pointer 20 irrespective of the position that the indicator shall occupy.
While I have shown and described herein a satisfactory form of mechanism that will accomplish my purpose, this may be departed from to a greater or lesser degree and yet be within the spirit and intent of the invention which I do not therefore limitto the exact construction herein shown and described.

An indicator comprising a body. an indicating bar, means for supporting said bar on the body, indicating mechanism supported by the body and including an indicating needle, an indicating hand having an indicating end projecting on opposite sides of the bar, the latter having indicating characters on different sides thereof, and. an operating connection between said hand and needle.

An indicator comprising a body, an indicating bar, means for supporting said bar on the body, indicating mechanism supported by the body and including an indicating needle, an indicating hand having a ring shaped indicating end surrounding said bar, the latter being provided with indicating characters upon different sides thereof, and an operating connection between said hand and needle.

An indicator comprising a body, arms rising from the body, an indicating bar attached at its ends to the ends of said arms and having indicating characters, indicating mechanism supported by the body and including an indicating needle, an indicating hand having an indicating end to movably register with characters on the indicating bar, and an operating connection between said hand and needle.

An indicator comprising a body, arms rising from the body, an indicating bar attached at its ends to the ends of said arms and having indicating characters on different sides thereof, indicating mechanism supported by the body and including a needle, an indicating hand having an indicating ring at its end surrounding said bar, and an operating connection between said hand and needle.

An indicator comprising a body with a recess therein and With openings from said recess on the sides of the body located at right angles to each other, indicating mechanism including an indicating hand projecting through one of said openings, a frame rising from the side of the body containing this opening, said frame including an indicating bar having characters to register the movements of said indicating hand, an indicating needle projecting through the other of said openings in said body, and mechanism connecting said needle and hand.

An indicator comprising a body with a recess therein open on one side, a plate provided with a slot and closing said recess and having arms rising therefrom, an indicating bar secured to said arms, an indicating mechanism including an indicating needle projecting Within said recess,- an indicating hand projecting from the recess through said slot, and means for connecting said indicating needle and said indicating hand.

An indicator comprising a body having a recess therein, an indicating needle located in the body and projecting into said recess, means for exerting continuous pressure upon said needle in one direction, an indicating hand projecting into said recess, connections between said hand and needle, means for exerting continuous force upon said hand in a direction opposed to the force exerted by said needle, and an indicat ing bar located to register the movements of said hand.
8. An indicator comprising a body having a recess therein, an indicating needle having a shoulder and projecting into said recess, a spring to force said needle outward, a lever engaging said shoulder, an indicating hand projecting out from said recess and having a shoulder to engage said lever whereby the force upon said needle holds the lever. at one limit of its play, a spring for forcing the lever in the opposite direction, and an indicating bar to register the movements of said indicating hand.
