C. A. STRAND.
DIVIDERS.
-UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. STRAND, CE CHICAGO, ILLINoIs.
DIVIDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,053, dated J' une 6, 1893.
` Application tiled January 11, 1893. Serial No. 458,082. (No model.)
To afZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. STRAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dividers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beingvhad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relatesto improvements in divided calipers and other similar instruments, the object being to provide a novel construction of such device which shall possesssuperior advantages with respect to efficiency in operation.
The invention consists essentially in an instrument of the above character, comprising two pivoted legs, one of which is provided with a curved head havinga peripheral groove formed with screw threads, and the other leg, provided with a spring actuated plate, having a micrometer screw whereby said legs may be accurately adj usted by means of said screw, or be distended or contracted by simplypulling them apart or pushing them together as willhereinafterbefully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a pair of dividers constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a view ot' the spring actuated plate carrying the Inicrometer screw, detached. Figs. 4 and are detail views of the curved head having the peripheral screw` threaded groove.
`In the said drawings, the reference numerals 1 and 2, designate the legs, one of which, numbered 1,is provided withacurved, round ed or circular head 3, with a central aperture for the passage of the pivot 4. Upon its periphery this head is provided with a groove 5, and a number of screw threads 6. The other leg 2 is provided at its upper end with two lugs 7, embracing the head 3 and provided with apertures aligned with the aperture in said head and through which also the pivot passes. The leg 2 at its upper end is formed with a groove or recess 8, in which is pivoted a plate 9, comprising side iianges 10, an end iiange '12, and lug 13, through which the pivot pin 14 passes. The numeral 15 denotes a screw, the lower end of which is journaled in a recess in the lug 13, and formed with an annular groove. with which engages a transverse pin 16, which holds the screw in place. This screw passes through an aperture in the ange 12, and is provided with a milled head 17. Intermediate of theloweror inner end of plate 9, and legis located acoiled spring 1S.
The numeral 4 denotes the pivot which connects the` two legs, and it consists of aheaded lug, having a screw-threaded recess in which engages a headed screw 20, having a finger piece 21.
The operation will be readily understood. To distend or contract the legs it is only necessary to pull them apart or push them together the spring actuated plate 9 yielding so as to allow the screw 15, to dsengage itself from the threads in the head When, however, it is desired to accurately adjust the legs it can be accomplished by rotating said screw.
While I have illustrated and described a pair of dividers herein, it is obvious that the invention can be used in connection with calipers and other similar measuring instru ments.
Having thus describ'ed my invention, I. claim-n In a measuring instrument ofthe character described, the combination with the leg l having a circular head provided with peripheral screw threads, the leg 2 pivoted thereto having a recess in its upper end, the spring plate located in said recess and pivoted to the leg, the micrometer screw journaled in said plate and engaging with the said peripheral screw threads and the coiled spring interposed between the lower end of said plate and theleg 2, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
` CHARLES A. STRAND. Vitnesses:
J CHN ERICKSON, DANN BREWER.
