COMBINATION TABLE AND DESK.
Application filed December 29, 1913.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, JOHN H. MILLER and Louis RAAB, both of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Tables and Desks; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
Our invention relates to a combination table and desk, and more particularly to that class of furniture involving a movable table top section adapted to be projected forwardly from its normal position to serve as a desk, and be supported'in such forward position by means of brackets which are so connected as to be moved automatically forwardly and rearwardly in accordance with the position of the movable table top section, and it has for its object to provide a novel connecting mechanism between the bracket and the movable section, to afford a radiator operation as well as a neat construction that can be manufactured economically.
A further purpose of our improvement resides in the provision of a connection or hinge between the bracket and the movable section of the table top, such that a smooth and unobstructed surface is afforded when the device is used as a desk, and less difficulty is eXpei-ienced in the manufacture of the structure.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan View, showing a table equipped with the devices forming a part of the present invention, the movable top section appearing in open position, to serve as a desk; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the parts as shown in Fig. 1; Fig.
3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4: is an enlarged sectional View, with parts broken away, taken in the same plane as Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a similar view with the movable table top section open; Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of the connection between the movable section and Speeification'of Letters Patent.

the rod leading to the movable bracket; Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the connecting means between the movable table top section and the movable bracket showing the position of the parts when the movable section is open; Fig. 8 is an enlarged perspective view of the leaf which is attached to the movable section; Fig. 9 is a similar view of the link which connects the leaf with the rod leading to the bracket, and Fig. 10 is a similar view of one end of the connecting rod between the link shown in Fig. 9, and the movable bracket.
Similar reference numerals throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
A convenient arrangement of parts, according to our invention, is illustrated in the present embodiment, in which is shown one type of a convertible or combination writing desk and table embodying front and rear legs 1 and 2 respectively, and a stationary top portion 3 which constitutes the rear part of the table top as shown in Fig. 3. The front of the table embodies a stationary portion or support 4, and a movable section 5 which normally occupies the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4c, and when projected forwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2, affords a writing surface. The adjustability of the movable table top section 5 is preferably secured by pivoting it to the support 4, at the forward edge of the latter, as by means of suitable hinges 6. In tables of this type, it is desirable to provide supports for the movable section of the table when the latter is in its forward position, and this is generally accomplished by means of suitable slidable brackets 7 which are connected with the movable section in such a manner as to be projected forwardly coincidently with the forward movement of the movable section. Various means have been suggested foraccomplishing this, but have met with objections either in the fact that when the movable section is open it presents upwardly extending projecting parts or obstructions which are both unsightly and in the way, and the hinged connections that have been devised to overcome this involved a first cost that was almost prohibitive. To obviate these difficulties, and to provide a hinged connecting means between the bracket and the movable section that will both be inexpensive to manufacture and effishown presently, while the latter is pivotally mounted upon the movable top section 5 by means of a leaf 12, carried by the top section and provided with arms 13 which embrace the sides of the link, as shown in Fig. 4. The link 11 is preferably U-shaped in cross section, and bifurcated at one end, forming lugs 14. The rod 8 is provided at one end with a reduced portion 15 which is cut away to form a shoulder 16, and when the reduced portion 15 is secured to the lugs 14 of the link, the shoulder 16 will engage under the upper wall of the link 11, limiting the movement thereof, as shown in Fig. 7 Relative movement of the link and connecting rod in the opposite direction is prevented when the upper surface of the connecting rod engages the edge of the upper surface of the link, as shown in Fig. 6. This construction enables the connecting parts to extend in a straight line, as shown in Fig. 5, when the movable table top section is open, the parts being housed in a suitable cutaway portion or slot, and thus affords a smooth and unobstructed surface. At the same time, the movable section can be readily closed by swinging it rearwardly, and the link 11 permits the connecting rod to drop beneath the plane of the movable top section, as shown in Fig. 4, so that it can be readily housed, and does not, interfere in any way with the movable section when the latter is closed. The metal parts constituting the hinged connection between the bracket and the movable section, and comprising the link, connecting rod and attaching plates or leaves, can be manufactured at comparatively small cost, all of which is due to their form, and the manner in which they cooperate, and it is our intention to cover by this application any such modified arrangements as may come within the terms of the claims, or accomplish the purposes of the invention by equivalent means.
lVe claim as our invention:
1. The combination with a stationary support, of a movable section pivotally arranged on the support, a movable bracket cooperating with the movable section when the latter is open, a rod pivoted at one end to the bracket and provided at its opposite end with a reduced portion, a shoulder formed on the reduced portion, and a link pivotally mounted on the movable section, said link having a U-shaped cross section and bifurcated at one end to engage the reduced portion on the rod, the upper wall of the link cooperating with the aforementioned shoulder to limit the relative movement of the parts.
2. The combination with a stationary support, of a movable section pivotally arranged on the support, a movable bracket cooperating with the movable section when the latter is open, a rod pivoted at one end to the bracket and provided at its opposite end with a reduced portion, a shoulder formed on the reduced portion, a U-shaped leaf secured to the movable section, a link pivotally mounted at one end to said leaf, the link having a U-shaped cross section and bifurcated at its opposite end to engage the reduced portion on the rod, the upper wall. of the link cooperating with the aforementioned shoulder to limit the relative movements of the parts.
