SMOKING-PIPE.-
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. January 12, 191$. Serial No. 1,768: i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM HILL and LAWRENCE GARDELLA, citizens of the United States, residing at Oroville, in the, county of Butte and State of California,'have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoking-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to smoking pipes, and the invention has for its'principal objects to provide a pipe having a metallic bowl and stem support, which structure permits of a thorough sterilizing and cleaning of the pipe without injury to the bowl thereof, and prevents the bowl from absorbing the nicotin and making the pipe strong and disagreeable. j
Another object of the invention is to provide a holding device spaced from the bowl which will permit the pipe to be readily grasped in the hand without the danger of the hand being burnt from the heat ofthe bowl.
With the above mentioned and other ob jects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construc tion within the scope of the claim may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. 7
To more fully comprehend the invention, reference is directed to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a .longitudinal sectional view of an embodiment of our invention. Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a viewin plan of the pipe bowl. Fig. l is a modified form disclosing a support for the protecting means. Fig. 5 is a modified form of fastening the ends of members forming the protecting covering.
Referring more particularly to the several views of the drawings, wherein like characters of reference designate like parts-1 is a pipe,'for1ned' of any suitable material, but preferably cast from aluminum, insuring lightness, and the same consists of the usual bowl 2, tubular stem supf Patented port3, and'stem 4, which is removably secured in any suitable manner to the stem support. 'The-upper portion of the bowl? is formed. with an annular flange 5, perforated, as at 6, to permit the heat radiating from the surface of the bowlto pass there-' through, and in said flange are secured at spaced intervals the upper ends of the members or rods 7 of any suitable material. The
members 7 are bent to follow the lines of the pipe and are seated at their opposite ends in suitable recesses adjacent to the outer end of the stem support 3, and the same are retained in position preferably by a thimble 8 whichencircles the ends thereof.
The members or rods 7 preferably sur-- round the bowl and stem support and provide a protecting covering therefor, which enables the smoker tograsp the pipe without becoming burnt, as in the case with metal pipes as heretofore constructed. The rods or members 7 being spaced from the bowl and stem support admit of air circulating between the same and the bowl or stem 7 support, the circulation of air maintaining the rods or members cool. The rods or. members 7 surrounding the stem support and bowl provide a protecting means which admits of a heated pipe being deposited on a table or the like withoutthe heat from the bowl injuring the same.
If desirable an annular supporting spider 9 may be formed on or surround the stem support, as in Fig. 1, and formed with openings through which the members or rods 7 pass, in which case it is not necessary to employ the thimble 8, as the spider 9 forms a support for the members or rods 7 and also .maintains the lower ends thereof in uniform spaced relation from each other and from the stem support.
In Fig. 5 we have disclosed a modified form of fastening for the upper ends of the rods or members 7, and in this construction an annular flange 10is formed surrounding the upper end of the bowl 2, and the upper. I
ends of the rods or members 7 are bent or curved as at 11 and the bent or curved ends thereof are inserted in openings in the outer face of the flange. It is to be understood that the rods or members 7 may be of'any desired shape and of any suitable material just so long as the, same provide a means whereby the pipe may be grasped without burning the hands by the heat from the bowl.
Having thus described our invention what we claim is A tobacco pipe comprising a bowl and stem supporting portion, the bowl provided with an annular flange at its upper end and the stem supporting portion formed with an annular groove at its outer end, a protecting covering surrounding the exterior of said bowl and stem supporting portion and comprising a plurality of members spaced from each other and from the bowl and stem supporting member, and each seis WILLIAM HILL. LAWRENCE GARDELLA.
