FWZ. l
JOI-IN PACELLI, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
sHUTTER-FAsTENER.
Appncauonmed. February 1c, 1915. Serna No. 3,612.
of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shutter-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in fasteners for shutters, with the object in view of providing a device which will enable the shutter to be locked automatically in a closed position and which may be readily released from its locked position.
Another object is to provide a device which is simple in construction and economical in the manufacture.
A practical embodiment of this invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan'view of the device showing a portion of a window sill and a portion of a shutter in'their closed position. Fig. 2 represents a section taken in the plane of the line A-A of Fig. 1. F ig. 3 represents a view of the same, showing the position t-he device assumes when the shutter is to be released. Fig. 4 represents a view of the same, showing the members in their unlocked position, the shutter being open. Fig. 5 represents a plan view of a modified form of a spring arm of the shutter member, and Fig. 6 represents a section taken in the plane of the line B-B of Fig. 5.
` The device, as a whole, consists of a sta# tionary member which is secured to the sill 2 of a window by any suitable means, in the present instance, screws 3. as shown, and a movable member l secured to the shutter 5 by means of screws 6.
The stationary member comprises a plate 7 having a downwardly extending tubular portion8 set in a recess 9 in the sill. A plunger 10 is located within the tubular portion 8 and adapted to project slightly above. the plate 7. The plunger is yieldingly held in its normal position by means of a spring 11, seated in the bottom of the tubular portion 8, and engaging a shoulder 12 of the plunger. The plunger is guided in its movement by a pin 13 extending downwardly from the plunger through a hole 14 in the bottom of the tubular portion 8. The upward movement o-f the plunger is limited bythe free end of the pin 18 being Speeifiwtion 0f Letters Patent- Patented Get. 12V, 1915.` i.
upsetas shown at 15, which yupset end engages the bottom ofthe tubula'rport'ion.
The movable member 4 comprises a horizontal arm 16,` the free end of which is turned v upwardly and lprovided with' a groove' 17 which terminatesat ahole 18 in the arm. The member 4 is located upon the shutter 5 in position for the groove to en'- gage the plunger which will enter the hole 18, iii which position the shutter is locked to the sill as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. To
remove the plunger from the hole, the hori-V Zontal arm 16 is provided with a spring arm 19, fixed at 20, the free end of which arm has secured therein al plug 9.1 adapted to enter the hole 18 and engage the plunger for releasing the shutter. In Figs. 5 and 6 the spring arm has a tongue 22 struck downwardly therefrom, which tongue is adapted to enter the hole 18 to engagethe plunger to release the shutter. Thus it` will be seen that the shutter when being brought tov-its closed position, will cause the groove to ride over the plunger which will be forced down-` wardly until the hole 18 is directly over the plunger, whereupon the spring will force it upwardly into the hole, thereby lockingthe shutter fast to the sill. 'Ihe shutter 5'is released by pressin'g downwardly upon the plug 21 and. with a slight pressure outwardly. The downward pressure of thev plug forces the plunger outof thehole 18 and flush with the plate 7, as shown in Fig.
.-3, in which position the shutter may be pushed open bv the outward pressure to the position shown in Fig. 4.
While I have shown the device as applied to a shutter, it'will be understood thatv it may be equally well applied to window sashes or the like.
It isvevident that various changes may be resorted to inthe construction, form andV arrangement of the several parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention and hence kI do not wish to limit myself strictly to the structure herein shown and described, but Y What I claim is:
1. A shutter fastenercomprising a sill member provided with a spring vactuated plunger, a shutter member adapted to interlock with said plunger, and a spring arm member provided with a spring-actuated plunger, a shutter member having a hole therein `for receiving the plunger, and a spring arm carried by the shutter member adapted to engage said plunger through said hole to release the members.
3. A shutter fastener comprising a sill member provided With a spring-actuated plunger, a shutter member having a hole therein for receiving said plunger, a spring arm carried by the shutter member, and a plug secured to the spring4 arm adapted to engage said plunger through said hole to release the members. Y
4L. A shutter fastener comprising a Sill vmember provided With a spring-actuated saidhole to release the members.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two Witnesses, this 13th day of February, 1915.
