To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, [FRANK Lowmn'a citi zen of the United States-residing at Lou-r donville, in the county of Ashland and State,
of Ohio, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Drop-Feed Lubricators, of which the followinglis a specification. 1
The invention relates to lubricators for feeding grease, oil I or, other similar lubricants into the steam line 0r;steam ,chestyof an engine; and the'object of the present'in 'vention is to provide a lubricator which will not only completely heat and liquefy theluballie plate inthe upper ,end, of thefeed' bricant for feeding in small sizedldrops,-but
to further heat'and to more completely vaporize or atomize'thev s'ameithan has here tofore been done by previous devices of this character. v I I The object of the improvement is attained by locating the feed chamber within the grease chamber, with a vertical stra'ightway feed port in the upper end of the feed chamber, and a lateral discharge tube leading from the lower end ofthe feed chamberto the steam line; by inclining the bottom of the' feed chamber upward from the dis charge pipe, directly-underneath the feed port, for receiving thelubricant dropping therefrom; and by carryinga steam heating pipe transversely through the upperend of,
the grease chamber, into the upper endof the feed chamber, and providing a pendent near the end of the steampipe for shielding the feed port and directing thesteam downward along and across the inclined bottom of the chamber where the lubricant fdrops thereon, for atomizingand vaporizing the 7 same, ,andv carrying the vapor, lubricant through the discharge pipe into the steam line; I f

The discharge tube 10, extends from the lower end of the feed chamber-to the steam supply pipe ll,and is preferably provided with the stop valve 12, as shown in the drawing, The inclinedsuri'ace 13 is provided in the feed chamber directly below the nipple in the lower end of the feed port, so that" drops of lubricant will fall and spread upon the surface before passing downward into the discharge tube. This surface may be formed as part of the bottom of, the feed located in the upper end ofthe grease champarticular cona r oaf her, with its inner end leadinginto oneside V of the upper end of thefeed chamber and itsvouter end communicatingwith the steam supply line 11 at a point above the entrance of the discharge tube therein, as by means of the steam pipes M and M"; the former ofjwhichjpipes maybe controlled by the valve 15, and the latter'one by the valve 16. The steam pipe 141-" is also in communication with the condensing pipe 17, which may be provideduwith the condensing chamberlB andvleads to the condensing tube 19, opening into the lower, end of the grease chamber,
in a manner well known in this art.
The transverse baffle plate 20 depends from the upper end of the feed chamber, in front of and across the entrance of the steam heating pipe therein; which plate serves to protect the end-of the nipple from the incoming How of steam, and permit for mation of drops of lubricant thereomand to prevent the steam from wearing away the surfaces of the sight glasses 9 and also to direct the flow of steam downward along and across the inclined surface inf-the feed chamber below the feed nipple, for the purpose of constantly heating the same, and also to impinge the drops of grease as the same spread out upon theinclmedsurface, for superheating, atom zing and vaporizing the same, and carrying the resulting vapor lu-rv bricant-through the discharge. tube into the steam supply line. It is evident that thepresence of the transverse heating tubein the upper end of the grease chamber serves to completely liquefy the grease therein, at-a point where it may smalldrops of lubricant fall upon the'highly heated inclined surface, they will not; only spread upon and be instantly superheated by the same, but will be impinged by the down' flow directly downward through the feed port '5 to. form a drop'onthe end ofthe, .nipplefin the feed chamber; and' that thewardly deflected new. of steam from the heating pipe, with the result that the thin film'of liquid lubricant upon the plate will be completely atomized and vaporized by the steam, and carried therewith in the form of a vapor lubricant through the discharge tube intothe steam supply line.

A lubric'atorincluding a feed chamber having a pendent nippleinits upper end, a discharge tube'leading from its lower end a steam tube leading into its upper end, the bottom of the feed chamber being inclined in the'path of dropsfalling from the nipple, and a baffle plate shielding the nipple and directing the steam along and across the inclined bottom.
