FRANK B. FRETTER AND STARLEY F. BEASLEY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO; SAID BEASLEY ASSIGNOR TO SAID FRE'ITER.
ATOMIZER FOR LUBRIGA'IING PURPOSES.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANK B. F nmr'rnn and STA'RLEY F. BEASLEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Atomizers for Lubricating Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and original'atomizer designed more especially to be used with what are known as sight 't'eed lubricators, and the invention consists in the construction and combination 01? parts substantially as shown and described and particularly pointed out in the claims. In the accomanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lubricator, a steam pipe and the atomizer exposed in said pipe and having its supply connection with the lubricator. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the atomizer considerably enlarged :is'oom pared With Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a central sectional elevation thereof.
The novelty herein lies, first and chiefly, in the atomizer a as a new article of manu- .LftlCtLll'G and sale and adapted to be used in conjunction with a suitable li'lbricator b or like source of supply, the said atomizer being located in the steam pipe 0. A'pipe line 2 leads from the pipe 0 to the lubricator and has a valve 3 in the angle thereof to control the flow of steam through the same, and a pipe .4 leads from the lubricator into pipe 0 and is adapted to supply oil to the top of the atomizer through an elbow The said elbow or joint 5 screws upon the neck (3 of the atomizer and the said neck is tubular while the body of the atomizer is shown as solid, and the said neck has an orifice or hole 7 in its bottom through which the oil passes onto the spiral or worm S. The said spiral runs about the outside of the body of the atomizer and is characterized by an approximately concave-convex 't'ormatimi in cross section, the channel in the top thereof being substantially t-rough-sliaped or highest at the edge of the spiral and descending on Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 4, 1912. Serial No. 718,490.
Patented Mar. 4, 1913.
a substantially curved line to a lower plane at the base or core of the anchor. This a ffords an exposed but confining channel for the oil in which it spreads as it flows downward and is heated and ultimately atomized and absorbed by the steam, so that when it reaches the cylinders it is so thoroughly incorporated with the steam that it uniformly coats or covers thecylindcr walls and pene trates all the working parts with which the steam comes in contact and lubricates the same in a most effective manner without waste ot oil.
The spiral may be of any desired length and be covered with wire gauze or mesh 10 as herein shown or without such covering if preferred, depending on conditions in each individual case.
In any event the low of the oil is measured practitnlly in drops, so that the orifice 7 may be very small so far as the flow of the requisite amount of oil is concerned and the control of flow is primarily 111 the luhricator I; by suitably disposed valves.
\Vhat we claim is:
1. As a new article of manufacture and sale. an atomizer having a cylindrical body with a spiral channel about the same deepest inside to carry the oil and having a receptacle at its top provided with an orifice in its bottom opening into said channel.
2. A steam pipe and an atomizer therein having, a spiral channel about the same deepest at the bottom of the channel to convey oil therein and to promote atomization, said atomizer having, a tubular neck provided with an escape orifice in its bottom into said channel, in combination with a luln-icalor aml pipe connections therefrom with the said neck.
In testimony whereo'l we atiix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
S'iARLEY F. BEASLEY.
