CALIPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 12, 1915.
Application filed September 24, 1914. Serial No. 863,338.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that 1, CHARLES ROTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Philadelphia, in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Calipers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in calipers, and relates more particularly to calipers of the type which are designed both for inside and outside measurements.
The primary object of the invention is to provide calipers of the type indicated in which the caliper legs are formed integral and provided with leg divisions which enable the calipers to be used by inversion about the pivotal connection between the legs for both inside and outside measurements.
Further, the invention aims to provide calipers of simple and economical construction employing minimum of material and expeditious manufacture.
In the drawings: Figure 1, is a plan view of the invention; Fig. 2, is a side edge elevation; and Fig. 3, is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing the calipers inverted.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, the calipers is formed with a pair of legs pivoted at 1, and held in adjusted position by the usual thumb screw 2. Each leg is bifurcated to form a pair of branches, or arms or divisions 3 and 4. The arms 3 are straight and are curved outwardly at their free ends at to provide for inside measurements, while the arms 4: are arc-shaped so that their points 6 provide for outside measurements. It will be noted that the arms 3 and 4 are located in side by side relation, both being stamped in one piece with the leg itself. The arms 3 and 4 are formed by bifurcating the legs at the centers thereof and longitudinally of the legs, after which the arms 4 are curved into the form depicted in the drawings.
By referring to Fig. 1, it will be seen that in the full line position of the parts, the points 6 can be used for either outside work, or the points 5 can be used for inside work. By inverting the legs, which is done by moving same about their pivotal connection, the points 5 can be then used for outside work and the points 6 used for inside work, which makes the tool possessed of a wide range of use for both inside and outside measurements. When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, the points can be used for inside work, and since the points 5 project beyond the points (3, it will be apparent that the points 5 can thus be used for very small work, while the points 6 can be used for larger work, both points in the position shown in Fig. 3 being for inside measurements.
That is claimed is 1- A device of the type described including a pair of members pivotally connected together at their normally upper or inner ends to allow of the reversal of the positions of said members, each member being split or bifurcated, the resultant two limbs of each member being arranged one to extend in a straight line and the other being of quadrant formation said limbs or branches having oppositely projecting terminals.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES ROTH.
