BUCHANAN, OF SANFORD, FLORIDA.
CALIPERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1917.
Application filed September 3, 1915. Serial No. 48,844.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMEs W. H. BALES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sanford, in the county of Seminole and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calipers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in calipers, the object of the invention being to provide a combination tool of this class which provides a double pair of calipers for outside measurements and a pair of calipers for inside measurements and which are cheap and simple in construction, durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which they are intended.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of calipers constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In accordance with my invention I provide a central arm 1 the outer end of which is bifurcated to form oppositely extending curved points 2-3. A pair of inside caliper arms 4-5 are arranged with their pivotal ends on opposite sides of the end of the center arm and are pivotally connected thereto by means of a bolt 6, said bolt also forming the pivot for a pair of side arms 7-8, the points of which are indicated respectively at 9 and 10, and respectively coact with the points 2-3 in making outside measurements. The side arms have their pivotal ends arranged on the outer sides of the inside caliper arms.
The center arm 1 is provided on opposite sides with curved arms 11-12 which respectively pass through guides 1314 that are respectively secured on the arms 78 as shown. The said guides are respectively provided with set screws 1516 to engage said arms 11-12 and hence secure the side' arms at any desired adjustment. The inside caliper arm 4 is provided with a similar guide 17 and set screw 18 for coaction with a curved arm 19 carried by the arm 5, to secure said arms 45 at any desired adjustment. The inside caliper arms may be provided with a saw gage scale 20 and a measuring scale 21 or any other suitable scales. Said arms 45 are provided with compass points 22 and also with outwardly extending points 23 for use in measuring inside diameters.
By the provision of the double outside caliper a diameter can be ascertained by one set of arms and said diameter maintained by the calipers for future use while the other set of arms can be used Without interfering with the first named arms. The inside caliper arms also enable inside measurements to be made. The common pivot bolt 6 of all of the caliper arms is of material advantage in simplifying the construction of the calipers.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In a caliper structure, a body, a pair of legs pivotally connected to said body and extending longitudinally from one end of the body, an arcuate guiding strap having one end bent to form a substantially U- shaped loop, said loop being secured to the under surface of one of the pivotal legs and extending upwardly across the edge of the leg, a guide strap carried by the leg which is free from connection with the arcuate guiding bar, a set screw carried by said guide strap for engagement with said bar for holding the legs in adjusted pivotal position, and the bight portion of said loop adapted to engage the edge of the pivoted arm which is free from connection with the strap for limiting the pivotal movement of the arm in one direction.
In testimony whereof I aflix in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES W. H. BALES.
