To all whom it may coa-cern.:

Be it known that I, ANDREW TURNBULL, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Housing for Clothes-Lines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencebeiug had to the accompan ying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents. a plan or top view of this invention. This invention relates to that class of devices known as housings for clothes-lines 5 and it consists of a bracket which can be conveniently attached to d post, and which forms the bearings for the axle of a reel, said bearings being open and provided with locking-pins in such a manner that when the reel is placed within the bearings of the bracket andthe locking-pin inserted the clothes-'line can be unwound and drawn around yVarious posts, and finally brought to the required tension by turning the reel back vand securing it in the required position by the ratchet-wheel pawl and by turning the reel the line can be wound up, and when the lockingpins are withdrawn the housing, together with the line, can be taken down, stored away with ease and facility, without being liable to become soiled by dust or other impurities.

In the drawing, the letter A designates a reel,f which is inclosed in a cylindrical case, B, mounted loosely on the gudgeon a a! of said reel, and provided with a slot or aperture, b, through which passes the clothes-line c, one end of this line being made fast to the reel, so that by turning said reel the line will be wound up thereon inside of the case B. The gudgcons a a. of the reel extend through the heads of the case B and have their bearings in a bracket, G, which is secured to apost, D. The bearings in the brackets are open, as at'z' i, and they are provided with locking-pins d,

which are passed through the holes K K, by which means the gudgeons a. a. of the reel are retained in place and are free to revolve, and when these pins are taken out the reel, to gether with the protecting case, can be removed while the bracket remains fast to the post. One of the gudgeons a. of the reel eX- tends through its bearing in the bracket, and on it is mounted a ratchet-wheel, e, and a winch, f. A stop-pawl, g, which is pivoted to the side of the bracket C, engages with the ratchet-wheel e, and prevents the wheel from being turned back by the strain of the line. The outer end oi' the line is provided with a loop It, and, if it is desired to rig up the clothesline, the reel is mounted in its bearings, the locking-pins are inserted, and the line is can ried round the sei-'eral posts E F Gr and hack to the post D, and the loop 71, is hitched onto a pin or hook, i, projecting from the bracket VO or from the post D. By turning the reel back iu the direction of the arrow marked on it in Fig. 3 the line is strained, and after the proper tension has been attained the reel is retained by the sioppawl g. In turning the reel the case B remains stationary, being prevented from turning round by the line passing out of the slot b.

When it is desired to take down the line the loop it is unhitched, and by turning the reel in the proper direction the line is taken in. The lookin g-pins are then taken out, and the reel, together with the line and the protecting-case B, can be readily taken down and put away, the line being fully protected against dust or other impurities by the case B.
