This invention relates broadly to vdyeingmachines and relates particularly to an improvement over the construction set forth in my Patent No. 955,993, issued April 26,1910, wherein a tank forming a chamber which receives the mass to be dyed is provided with a perforated false bottom and a perforated centrally disposed distributing member for distributing the dye liquor together with a cover for such tank provided with discharge openings adjacent the periphery thereof and adapted to cause an outward and` upward circulation of the dye liquor whereby the mass is expanded out laterally against the side of the tank and upwardly against the underside of the cover so that channeling around the mass and through the mass is prevented.
This invention relates to the same type'of machine except that the falsebottom is prefably in the shape of an annulus and is adjustable relative tothe central distributing member so'that diii'erent quantities of inaterial may be dyed in the machine eiectively and with ease, and to means for raising the bottom against the mass as it shrinks in size and during the operation of the machine. i Y' The invention also relates ,to a modication of this machine wherein the discharge' openings are arranged not only in the cover but also in the side of the tank adjacent to the periphery of the cover whereby the discharge 'is increased and yet the lower part of the tank below the discharge openings is left imperforated to allow for the shrinkage of the mass.
Further invention resides in thearrange- ,ment of a samplingdevice whichis freely accessible from the outside of the machine and which will receive a portion of the mass to be dyed so vthat the operator may detery mine at all times during operation just what is taking place within the machine.

cylindrical portion 41 whichhas an opening therein slightly less in diameter than rthe diameter of the boss 33, but made suiciently large to admit of access by the hand to the edge of the boss so that in packing the tank -41 is finished to receive a nut 42 which is threaded onto the bolt 37 and is provided with peripheral openings 43 or a Spanner wrench. The cover 40 is still further provided near its periphery with a group of discharge openings 44 which permit the passage of the dye liquor from within the tank to a point above the c'over.' The nut 42 holds the cover down uponthe mass and the mass when it is rst packed,.holds the false bottom down upon the flange 31, and in order to hold all of these parts within the tank suitable blocks and screws and clips are provided. Each of the blocks comprises a body portion 45 having` a threaded opening 4G therein for receiving a bolt 47 which is adapted to engage the cover. The body portion 45 of the block is also provided with a flat p-rojection 48 which is adapted to extend through any one of the slots 20, and a lug 49 extending upwardly from the fiatv projection and for engaging that portion of the ring 17 iin front of the internal recess 22. The block may be locked in position by registering the lug 49 withthe recess 22, and the flat projection with the slot 20. The block is then pushed outward from the center, or in other words, the flat projection is pushed into the opening and the block ispthen given a slight movement eircumferentially with respect to the ring. so that the lug 49 engages in the segmental recess 22. The block is then secured to the ring and the bolt 47 may be screwed down to force the cover and the other parts into the tank. When they have been forced down properly the cover clips may be put in place in other openings in the inner periphery of the upper ring 17,*and the body portion 50 ofthese clips is similar in all respects to the body portion of the blocks, but in place of' the screw 47 there is a long shank which is adapted to extend down and engage the cover. -The side wall 13 of the tank is provided preferably at a point opposite to the opening 14 with lanother opening 14, and lthis receives a pipe 59 provided with a valve 60 and suitablev elbow connections and 'discharge pipe 61, and this pipe '61 is adapted to deliver the liquor from above the cover ,to av heating tank 62 which is* provided at its bottom with a steam inlet pipe 63 and with a discharge pipe 64, which is connected to a valve-65. This valve 65 is connected `by a short pipe 66 with the connection 55 at the inlet ofthe pump. K.

When the proper amount of material has been placed within the tank the cover is' put on and is .forced down,and by means of thegnut 42 the lower edge of the cylindrical portion 41 is brought down so that it engages the boss 33. llf any material should rest upon the boss it may be removed by the hand through 'the opening Within the cylindrical portion 41 before the nut 42 is brought down in place. The parts are then held within the tank by means of the bloc-ks and screws and -finally by the clips before referred to, and
dye liquor is supplied to the machine from.- the tank 62 where it is being heated by steam from the steam pipe 63, the liquor being drawn from this tankV through the center of the pump 54 and being then pumped up 4through the machine through' ma filled, by shifting the bottom so that the the pipe 5. The dye liquor may be permitted to pass out through the 4pipe 59 and through the course just described .to the pump, the valve 52 being closedfor both connections 57 and. 51, but when itis desired to cut of the circulation through the tank 62 the valves 60 and 65 are closed and 85 Hthe lvalve 52 is set'so that the pump is drawabove the false bottom and ing the liquor through the pipe 51 from the top of the machine and delivering it through liquor may be drawn from lthe bottom of the machine and delivered through the pipeA 58 above the cover. In fact 'many times it happens that better results are produced by first directing the dye liquor upwardly from the bottom through the mass and then reversing the direction of the dye liquor by delivering it above the cover by the pipe 58 and sucking it through the mass to the pump. Any desiredcirculation of the dye liquor through the tank or to the heating tank 62 may be brought about.
In the modification of the invention shown in Fig. 3, the side wall 67 is provided with an annular group of perforations 68 which extend above and below the periphery of thev cover when Vit is in normal position and the outsidezof the tank is provided with an annular casing 69 which is secured to the side of the tank. This annular casing has a suitable vconnection for the discharge pipe 51. In this embodiment the discharge openings are at the juncture of the cover and the sidewall and are below and above the periphery of the cover.
In order that the operator may know the condition of the materialwithin the tank a test box is provided for use in conjunction with the discharge of the tank, and this test box comprises a heavy base 70 which is in the form of a frame having an opening 71 therein and "a framework 72 which receives on all sides wire net 73. Av cover 74 is hinged to 4this framework and -is provided with a suitable latch 75 which engages a' pin 76. This boX is either secured or set upon the cover adjacent to the discharge opening for the pipe 51 so that the dye liquor from the tank is drawn up through the opening 71 in the base of the box, through the wire net which is on all sides and through the sample of the material which is placed within Athe box, so that by reason of the looseness of this sample and by reason of its small size the dye is distributed through it and it is in the same condition which prevails in the material within thetank so that the operator by observing this sample may know exactly vwhat is taking place within the machine.
If it should be desirable at any time to reducefthe vcapacity of the machine,`this y be accomplished, before the tank 1s recesses at the inner periphery are in vertical alinement withrthe lugs 0n the exterior of'thecentral distributing member when the false bottom. may be raised or ylowered past aol any of the lugs and then rotated so that when' it is released again it will rest o n other lugs whereby when the machine 1s packed, it will receive less or more material as the case may be. The object of raising the false bottom to decrease the capacity of the machine is that no matter what the amount of the mass to be dyed may be, it will be held up against the underside of the cover upon the initial starting of the machine, for it is Aquite obvious that if there were a small mass of material in the bottom of the chamber, the ldye liquor could iiow v over the mass from the center to the periphery and satisfy the force of the circulation, thereby forming a channel, and if this chan-v nel is formed there is nothing to circulate the dye liquor through the mass. v
By the arrangement of the cable connections with the false bottom the latter may be moved upward against the material as it shrinks during the dyeing operation, and
if desirable the lugs about the central distributing member may be eliminated and the change in the capacity ofthe machine may be brought about by varying the position of the false bottom prior to the dyeing 0peration or after the material has become moistened with the liquor, as the false bot-A capacity and any quantity of material may v be dyed in it.
Having described my invention, I claim: l. In a dyeing machine, a receptacle form- .35 ing a chamber for receiving the material to be dyed and having a wall against which thematerial is to be compacted, top and bottom members for said receptacle, said wall being provided with a group of discharge openings adjacent. one of said top and bottom members only, and means forv supplying the dye liquor to the mass at a point on the opposite side thereof from the discharge.
2. In a dyeing machine, a receptacle forming a chamber having a vertical wall provided with an imperforate part and a group of perforations extending around the entire tank, said wall being adapted to have the material compacted against the same, top andv bottom members, one of which is arranged adjacent the imperforate part of the Wall and the other is ad] acent the perforated part, such -memb'er adjacent the perforated part being provided with discharge openings adjacent the discharge openings in the wall, and means for supplying the dye liquor to the mass at a point opposite to the discharge vwhereby the mass is forced against the imperforate part of the wall and against the member having the discharge openings.
3. a dyeing machine, a tank adapted to receive the material to be dyed and having on its side a` imperforate portion and a u group of discharge openings, top and bottom members, one arranged adj aeent the imerforate portion and the other arranged adjacent to the discharge openings, said last named member having discharge openings adjacent the discharge openings in the side of the tank, and means for delivering the dye liquor to the mass at a point opposite to the discharge openings whereby the mass is forced outwardly against the side of the tank and against the member having the discharge openings. 75
4. In a dyeing machine, a tank having a bottom and an annular group of discharge openings in the side thereof and below the same an annular imperforate portion, a cover for said tank adapted to. be arranged in a vmanner such that its periphery is adjacent to the 'discharge openings, said cover having discharge openings near its periphery, and means for delivering the dye liquor to the mass at a point opposite to the disg5 charge.
5. In a dyeing machine, a tank having a bottom and an annular row of discharge openings near the upper edge thereof and an annular imperforate portion between such row of openings and the bottom of the tank, a cover for said tank adapted to normally assume a position with its periphery substantially midway between the upper and lower row of perforations, said cover being provided with discharge openings adjacent its periphery, and a distributing means adapted to deliver the dye liquor from the center and from the bottom of said tank whereby the mass is driven toward the side of the tank and against the under side of the cover. In a .dyeing machine, a tank having a bottom and a group of discharge openings in the side and extending around the entire tank with an. annular imperforate portion between said group of openings and the bottom of the tank, an annular casing on the outside of said tankv for receiving the' dye liouor from the tank through the discharge openings, a cover for said tank adapted` to be arranged with its periphery between the upper and lower row of discharge openings,
and a distributing member for directing the dye liquorfrom the center outward against theside of the tank and upward toward the cover. v
7. In a dyeing machine, a tank -having a bottom, a cover for said tank, a hollow distributing member comprising a substantially 126 cylindrical portion provided with main supply openings and an upper tapering portion provided with auxiliary supply openings, and a false bottom inthe tank.
8. In a dyeing machine, a tank having a 12h bottom, a cover for said tank, a central distributing member having a main substantially-cylindrical portion provided with main supply openings, a tapered upper portionl provided with auxiliary supply openings,
and an 'annular false bottom extending from the base of said distributing member. 9. In a dyeing machine, a tank, a cover 4 for said tank, a central distributing member engaging the underside of said cover and having a plurality vof lugs arranged in hori zontal rows, and a false bottom having re cesses for receiving said lugs whereby it may be adjusted in different horizontal positions.
10. In a dyeing machine, a tank, a central distributing member having a solid upper boss, a false bottom within the tank, a cover for said tank and comprising an open-ended ber at the center, and means engaging theI cover for forcmg the same down against the top of the distributing member.
