Description

CHARLES SCHLEICHER. Improvement in Needle-Wrappers. No. 115,529. Patented May 30,1871.

IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLE-WRAPPE'RS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,529, dated May 30, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES SCHLEICHER, of Schoent-hal near Aix-la-Ohapelle, Bhenish Prussia, have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Wrappers for Needles; and the following is hereby declared to be a full and correct description thereof.
Needles are almost always put up in small paper packages, paper being used as a convenient means for containing the proper number and preventing the needles being injured. These paper wrappers only partially protect the needles, because, when exposed in a moist atmosphere, the needles are liable to rust.
My improvement relates to a material for wrappers which will combine both the afore-v said features of protecting the needles from injury, and also lessen the danger of the needles rusting from dampness. Said improvement consists in a new wrapper for needles, made by employing the usual needlewrapper paper, or similar material which will not injure the points of the needles, as a lining for the inside of the wrapper, and metal foil for the outside of the wrapper, the two thicknesses of material being permanently connected to each other by any suitable cement so as to form a material which will be perfectly waterproof, and preventall moisture penetrating to the needles inclosed by said wrapper.
On Figure l of the drawing I have illustrated, by a sectional view, my improved material for needle-wrappers; and in Figure 2 the needle-wrapper is shown complete by a perspective View.
a represents the paper or other similar material to form the inside of the wrapper, and b is the outer thickness of metal foil.
The foil and the paper are to be connected to each other by any suitable cement, and the material thus formed should be pressed so as to intimately connect the foil and paper- The material, after being out to the proper size, is to be folded so as to form the wrapper, and may have any desireddevice printed thereon.
The wrapper thus made is a new article of manufacture that possesses the useful features aforesaid of protectingthe needles from injury, and also preventing the needles rusting from moisture penetrating through the material of the wrapper.
I am aware that metallic foil has been used to wrap needles, but the needles are more liable to injury when the metal foil comes directly in contact than when a paper intervenes.
I do not claim the use of tin-foil and paper in wrapping up packages, as tobacco and similar articles have been so wrapped, and I am aware that sheets of paper and foil have been pasted together and employed for various purposes.
I claim as my invention-- The wrapper for needles, made in the manner specified, as a new articleof manufacture.
Signed by me this 23d day of February, A.
CHARLES SOHLEICHER. Witnesses:
JAMES PARK, ALFRED NAUS.
