ATEN oFFC LUTHER MARTIN KELLETT, OF WILLIFOBD, ARKANSAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
COMB. v
Patented Sept. 28; 1915.
. Application filed September 3, 1913. Serial N 0. 787,949.
To all whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, LUTHER M. KELLETT, a citizen of the Unlted States, residing at lVilliford, in the county of Sharp and State 7 of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a comb for use in combing the hair and which can be easily and quickly cleaned.
The invention comprehends, among other features, a comb of a simple and durable construction which includes a comb body and means operable thereon for removing foreign matter from between and around the teeth of the comb.
A still further embodiment of the invention resides in a structure consisting of few and simple parts which can be cheaply and easily manufactured and wherein the cleaning means will not interfere with the proper and ordinary use of the comb body.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View of my comb, showing the cleaning member in normal position in full lines and in cleaning position in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional View taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a comb body 10 preferably of the usual construction and including a series of parallel teeth 11, equi-distantly spaced apart as shown. A frame 12 consisting of a plurality of side bars 13 extending longitudinally on both sides of the comb body 10 and connected by a series of transversely extending cleaning members 14, lying between the teeth of the comb body 10, thus holding the side bars 13 in sliding engagement with'the edges of the teeth, the said side bars belng preferably tapered toward their lower ion 1 gitudinal edges as shown. At their medial portions the side bars terminate in similar relatively spaced semi-circular uprights 15, between which is arranged an expansible spring 16 having its lower end abutting against a medial portion of the comb body 10 and its free end received in a knob 17 carried on the upper ends of the uprights 15.
The transverse members 14 are preferably encircled by cushions 18 of rubber or the like and which constitute parts of the cleaning members, the said cushion being preferably rectangular in cross section as shown.
When the comb body 10 has beenused in the usual manner for sometime it will be readily understood that the teeth will become covered with foreign matter such as dead skin which comes from the scalp, dandrufl or other similar substances or particles which tend to produce an unsanitary condition of affairs as well as prevent the proper use of the comb body. Now when the comb body is in this condition the operator, holding the comb body in one hand, presses on the knob 17 to exert a pressure against the expansible action of the spring 16, thus causing the frame 12, carrying the cleaning members 14:, to be advanced along the teeth 11 so that the members 14 will clean out the spaces between the teeth and the side bars 13 will remove any foreign substances from the edges of the teeth, it being understood that when pressure on the knob 17 is released, the frame 12 will return to normal position as shown in Fig. 1, due to the expansible action of the spring 16.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that my device consists of few and simple parts, can be easily and cheaply manufactured and presents a structure for use in combing the hair and which can at all times be kept in a clean and sanitary conditlon.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In combination with a comb body having l a series of teeth, of a plurality of opposed side bars extending longitudinally of the comb body and operable over the sides thereof and the sides of the teeth, cleaning members carried by the side bars and lying in the spaces between the teeth of the comb body, uprights arched in cross section and projecting from medial portions of the side bars, with the vertical edges of the uprights spaced apart a distance slightly greater than the width of the comb body, said uprights forming a casing, a spring arranged in the casing and having one end thereof abutting against the comb body, said spring being held in vertical position by the said uprights, and a knob connecting the upper ends of the uprights and encircling the same to hold -the uprights together, said spring In testimony whereof I affix mysignature having an end secured 1n sald knob whereby 1n presence of tWo wltnesses. said spring W111 normally hold the sldc bars 4 1 in an uppermost position relatively to the LUTHER MARTIN ISELLLTT' 5 comb body, With the cleaning members nor- Witnesses: V
mally lying adjacent the inner extremities Jon W. KELLETT, of the teeth (of the comb body. C. J. VVILSON.
