Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 8, 1915. Serial No. 1,145,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER OBERG, a citizen of Sweden, residing at St. Edward, in the county of Boone and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Newspaper-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in newspaper holders of a type in which the folded portion of the several sheets comprising the paper are together inserted in a clamp that supports the paper and the free side of each sheet may be releasably retained in another clamping device from which said sheets may be successively released as desired.
In use the device is table or the like with the front page of the paper uppermost and retained in position by the upper or outermost of a series of clamps, the remaining sheets of the paper being successively retained in position by a series of clamps disposed upon each other and provided with a releasing member by which said clamps may be successively actuated.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in. the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of said specification and in which- Figure 1 is a top edge view of the device. Fig. 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is an edge view of Fig. 2. Fig. at is an enlarged view of a portion of the device showing more clearly the construction of the clamping means for the free edges of the newspaper pages.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference numeral 1 designates the side of the frame of the holder which is provided with a handle 2 and to which a flap or clamping member 8 is secured by spring hinges 4, 4. To the side 1 of the frame the top portion 5 is secured, or it may be formed integral with the side portion. To the side member 1 adjacent the handle a guide bracket 6 is secured through which a slide 7 provided with a handle extends that carries a cord 8 that runs over a pulley 9, carried by the top of the frame, to engage a sliding iron 10 that is formed with a lonlaid upon a library.
gitudinal slot 11 through which a guide pin 12 projects that is carried by the top 5 of the frame. remote from the cord 8 a spring 13 is secured which at its opposite end is secured.
to a pin 14 carried by the. frame.
is a lug carried by thesliding iron for successive engagement with the integral extensions 16 of fiat springs 17' that lie partly upon each other and are secured at one end to the top 5 of the frame.
Operation: The folded edge of a newspaper 18 is inserted between the flap 3 and slide 1 of the frame, the last sheet of the paper being frictionally held between the last and next to last springs 17 and the successive sheets are held in position along their free side by the successive springs arranged upon each other. Should there be as many sheets to the paper as springs 17 carried by the holder the outside sheet of the paper will reside between the uppermost spring 17 and the spring directly therebeneath. To release the pages of the paper successively the slide 7 provided with a handle is drawn toward the handle 2 thus causing the lug 15 to successively engage the spring extensions 16 and separate the springs so that the paper edges may be withdrawn.
What is claimed is 1. A newspaper holder comprising a frame having a top and a side portion, a
spring-pressed flap carried by said side portion, a plurality of stepped superimposed springs carried by said top portion, extensions formed integral with said springs, flexible release means carried by said top portion for engagement successively with said spring extensions and manually operable means carried by said side portion and connected to said flexible release'means for actuating the same.
2. A newspaper holder comprising a frame having a top and a side portion, a
spring-pressed flap carried by said side portion, a plurality of stepped superimposed springs carried by said top portion, extensions carried by said springs, a sliding iron carried by said top portion adjacent said spring extensions, a spring connecting said sliding iron and top portion for normally retaining the former member in normal position, a lug carried by said sliding iron for engagement successively with said extensions whereby said superimposed springs Patented Sept, 21, 1915. 7
To the end of thesliding iron pin carried by saidtop may be moved successively and manually operable means carried by said side portion and connected to said sliding iron for actuating the same. 7
3. A newspaper holder comprising a frame having a top and a side portion, a spring-pressed flap carried by said side portion, a plurality of stepped superimposed springs carried by said top portion, extensions carried by said springs, a slotted sliding iron carried by said top portion, a guide portion and projected through the slotted portion of said sliding iron, a spring connecting said sliding iron and top portion for normally retaining the former member in normal position, a
' lug carried by said sliding iron for handle carried by connection between said handle and the said engagesaid extensions springs may be a slide provided with a said side portion and ment successively with whereby said superimposed moved successively,
sliding iron.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
