Be it known that T, LoUis WV. JAonns'rnoM, a citizen of the li nited States, and resident of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and tate of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Check-Protector, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a check protector of simple and durable construction, which could be made at an expense far below the cost of an ordinary check protector, and within the financial means of those who have only a limited use for an article of this kind.

A further object is to provide such a check protector comprising a supporting receptacle having compartments for type and a com partment or receiving groove for type set in printing position, and to provide in con nection therewith a block or member adapted to fit on the first mentioned device, and an inking pad, and a rubber platen so arranged ith relation to the sides of the second supporting member, that when said supporting member is placed face downward against the lower supporting member, the inking pad will fit over type fixed in printing position, and with the platen above the type storage receptacle, whereas when the upper member is turned end for end, the

platen may be pressed down over the type set in printing position.

A further object is to provide in connection with such a device movable members adapted in one position for locking the upper and lower members together, and in another position to serve as limiting stops for properly positioning the upper and lower members with relation to each other.

My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device, whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 shows a top or plan view of the lower check protector member. Fig. 2 shows an inverted plan View of the upper check protector member. Fig. 3 shows a side elevation of the two members in assembled position, locked together. Fig. t shows a detail view of one of the locking and stop devices. Fig. 5 shows a transverse vertical sectional view through the entire check protector, taken on the line 55 of Fig. 3, with the inking pad above the type set in printing position, and Fig. 6 shows a similar view of the check protector, with the check therein, the platen being arranged above the type set in printing position.

In the exemplification of my invention set forth in the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference character 10 to indicate a block, which I have called the lower protector member. The block 10 may be made of any suitable material, and of proper size for the purpose. The block 10 is provided with a plurality of longitudinally arranged grooves 11, slightly spaced from each other by partition members 12, the upper ends of which are slightly below the level of the upper surface of the block 10. The grooves 11 form storage receptacles for type.

Spaced from the grooves 11 is a logitudinal groove 13, adapted to receive type set in printing position. The grooves 11 are of such depth that the type when received therein will stand with their upper edges below the upper surface of the block 10. The groove 13 is of such depth that when the type is set in printing position, the face of the type will be above the level of the block 10.

The upper check protector member comprises a block 14, having on its end surfaces a groove 15, in which is mounted an ink pad 16. The groove 15 is so located in the under surface of the block 14, that when said block is placed above the member 10, in one of its positions, the pad 16 will be above the groove 13 and will engage and supply ink to the type 17, set in the groove 13. The lower surface of the member 14: is also provided with a groove or recess 18, in which is mounted a platen 19 of rubber or other suitable material. The platen 19 is so located that when the upper protector member 1 1 is placed abovethe lower protector member 10 in one of its positions, as shown in Fig. 5, the platen 19 will stand above the type in the grooves 11 for protecting them when the protector is being moved from place to place. If the upper member is then turned end for end the platen 19 will rest above the groove 13.

Pivoted to the side and end of the member 10, near one corner thereof, are devices which serve the purpose of locking means and also as limiting stops. The lock and the groove 13.

Pivoted to the side or end of the member 10 is a stop member, having at its front end a hook member 21, adapted to engage a pin 22 in the side or the end of the member 1-1. Formed or secured to the member 20 is a comparatively broad fiat member 23, adapted to extend below the loweredge of the member 14 when the hook member 21 engages the member 22. lhe member 20 is moved downwardly to its position shown by the full lines in Fig. 4:, until it becomes the pin 24:. lhe member 13 stands above the level of the upper surface or the member 10 in position to serve as a stop for the member 1 whereby the member 141 may be easily placed. directly above the member 10. It will be seen that by the use of the combined lock and stop device, the members 10 and ll may be firmly locked together, and also that said devices serve as stops for limiting the movement of the member 2%. in two directions, when it is placed on the member 10.

In the practical use of my improved check protector, type representing the proper words and letters are placed inthestorage grooves 11. When it is desired to mark a check for proper protection against raising or the like, the proper type 17 are taken from the grooves 11, and properly placed in The groove 13 is slightly wider than the type to permit their ready insertion and removal, and a strip may be placed in the groove 13, at the side of the type 17 for iolding the type firmly in position. The hook members are then unfastened, and the members 20 are lowered, thereby raising the members 23' to their position, shown in Fig. 4:. The member 14: is then grasped in the hand member 10 with the ink pad 16 above the type 17 for supplying ink to the type. lhe check 26 is then placed in position above the type 17, and the member 1i is turned end for end and pressed down on the member 10 with suflicient pressure to cause the type 17 to make the proper impression.

The type 17 are provided with sharp aces 27, for iierttorating the check. After the check has been properly marked and perforated,-the member 14 may be again turned end for end and placed over the member .10 with the platen 19 above the type in the storage groove, the parts may then be locked together.

Theentire check protector is preferably made rectangular in form so as to occupy a Copies of thispatent maybe obtained for and fitted down five cents each, by addressing the minimum of space when in use, and also for convenience in transportation.

It will be understood that the parts, when placed togetl er firmly, protect the type, and also closely engage each other for preventing evaporation of ink on the pad 16.

It will be understood that some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my impro ed cheek protector v lthout departing from its essei 'al features and purposes, and it is my intention to cover by this application any such changes which may be included within the scope of my claims.

I claim as my invention.

1. In a device of the class described a lower check protector member having storage compartments and provided also with a groove for receiving type set in printing position, an upper check protector having a platen and an ink pad, the platen and ink pad being so located with relation to. the sides and ends or the upper member, that when said upper member is placed directly above the lower member in one positionthe ink pad will. be above the receptacle for type-in printing position, ant the platen will be whereas when the upper member is turned end for end the platen will be above the receptacle for type in printing position/ p 2.
