GORDON WILSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
REFERENCE-RECORD.
Application filed May 22 To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GORDON WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Reference-Records, of which the following is a detailed description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 illustrates the invention with my two special forms of sheets or leaves'assembled in operative position. Fig. 2 1llustrates what I term my secondary sheet, together with the method of attaching th;
*1g. is an end view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1. l
The principal object of my .inventlon is to provide a simple and efiicient means of quickly obtaining accurate and reliable 1nformation and data as to the conditlon of any department or branch of an organization or business, without being obliged to employ a long and tiresome operation of transcribing or rewriting figures or data at predetermined periods; for example, when it is desired to compare the figures or data of any one month in a certain year, with the data or figures of any corresponding month in a preceding year; or when it becomes necessary or importantito show the condition of any department in any year, as compared with its condition in any previous year.-
By the employment of my improvement,
a reference system or record is produced which is both efficient and inexpensive and which permits the manager or head of any department in an organization to keep in constant touch with the condition and standing of his department; thus making it possible for him to quickly locate any changes in the condition of the business, and hence be in a position to take prompt steps to remedy any faults or errors of management, and so forth.
In the preferred form of my invention, as disclosed in Fig. 1, A designates the main or primary sheet, while the complementary or secondary sheet is indicated at B, each sheet being suitably ruled, and divided into spaces adapted to register with corresponding spaces on the other sheet.
The main or primary sheet is folded over upon itself to form a binding flap, as clearly Specification of Letters Patent.

indicated at a in Fig. 3, thus providing a.
construction which will be durable and at the same time assist in holding the secondary sheet in place; both sheets being adapted to be secured in any suitablecover or binder, not shown in the drawing, in the following manner.
0n the inner edge or folded portion of sheet A, I provide a slot 6 having a closed portion 5 preferably arranged at right angles to. said slot, in such a manner that the post of any loose-leaf binder or cover may be passed through the slot 6 and into the aperture or portion 6 and be held firmly in position as at (Z; secondary sheet B being provided with an Opening 0 adapted to register with the closed portion 6, wherebyboth sheets will be retained by said post in fixed relation to each other and at any desired position.
The main or primary sheet, which is preferably of the same dimensions as the binder or cover, is ruled with vertical columns, as indicated at e in Fig. 1, and with horizontal lines f, each column being adapted to receive the figures or data of that department under investigation or consideration; the in-- nermost column 6, which is located next the binding flap or folded-over portion 9, being adapted to contain a chronologically arranged 7 table setting forth the different yearly periods to any extent that may be desired; the other vertical columns being numbered, as indicated on the drawing, so
as to indicate the department, under a given number, which is under investigation. The secondary sheet, which is of smaller dimensions vertically than the primary sheet, is also ruled with vertical columns h, corresponding to and adapted to register with the vertical columns 7 on sheet A; but said secondary sheet is so ruled with horizontal lines 2', that it contains only sufiicient spaces for receiv ing data or figures for each month in the year; the innermost column it, which corresponds to the innermost column 6 on sheet A, being adapted to receive a chronological table setting forth the twelve months in each year, the other vertical columns being numbered in the same manner as those on sheet A, and arranged to register therewith.
The method of putting my improved reference record into use, is as follows :The main or primary sheet A, containing a chronological table running from the year 1900 7 secured in not less than two places.
to the year 1921, or any desired number of years, is inserted in the loose-leaf binder in the manner heretofore described, and secondary sheet I3 is then inserted under the binding flap g so as to have the openings 0 register with the portion Z) at the point d; as clearly shown in Fig. 1; it being naturally understood that sheet A may be of any desired size and contain any suitable number of openings, and that sheet B may contain any number of openings 0, but preferably arranged in pairs spaced apart equidistantly so that the secondary sheet will always be After the sheets have been secured in place, it will be noted that the months of the second ary sheet will fall directly under the years of the primary sheet, and that Department-No. 1 on sheet 13 will fall directly under Department-No. 1 on sheet A, and as the secondary sheet may be placed at any desired position on sheet A, it is clear that the monthly figures of the current year for each department under investigation or consideration will be set forth directly beneath the yearly figures of the previous year relating to that department, thereby enabling the condition of that department, covering a period of years, to be seen at a glance and also avoiding the necessity of rewriting the yearly figures at the beginning of each year.
I have shown and described what I be lieve to be the most practical and satisfactory form of my invention; but it is evident,
however, that the construction may be altered in certain respects, without departing from the spirit of my invention; and I do not wish to be understood, therefore, as limiting myself to the exact construction shown and described.
Copies or this patent may be obtained for sheet being slidably adjustable upon said primary sheet so as to permit said sheets to register with each other at any predeterminedpoint, and means whereby said sheets may be secured together.
' 2. In a reference record, a primary sheet divided into columns arranged to receive figures or data relating to the yearly condition of any department of an organization or business, said primary sheet being folded upon itself so as to form a reinforced binding-fiap for use in any loose-leaf binder, a secondary sheet divided into columnscorie sponding with those of the primary sheet and arranged to receive figures or data relating to the monthly condition of -saidde partment, said secondary sheet beingsuperimposed upon and of smaller vertical di mensions than the primary sheet and being slidably adjustable thereon so as to permit said sheets to register with each other at any predetermined point, and means whereby said sheets may be secured together.
