To all whom it may 00720677t Be it known that I, TnoMAs A. FLANNl can, a cltizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combined Shoe and Legging, of wiiichthe following is a specification.

My invention comprehends a new and useful combined shoe and legging which is so formed that it can be quickly and easily put on and removed, and which, while preserving the appearance of a legging and being a shoe, overcomes the objectionable feature of the necessity of lacin the shoe.

It further compre lends a shoe and legging so combined that relative movements of both the front portion of the legging and the shoe are permitted. 1

It further comprehends other-novel features of construction, all as will be herein after fully set forth.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown in the accompanying drawing certain types and embodiments of it which, at present, are preferred by me, because in practice, they have given satisfactory and reliable results.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined shoe and legging embodying my in.- vention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation partly sectional, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, sectional on line a"w Fig. 1, with the parts in open position, both of the construction r presented in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another form of my invention with the leggin in open position and showing its connections between the tongue and the sides of the legging. Fig. 5 is a sectional view on line 3 y Fig. 4-, with the parts in closed position.

Beferring to the drawings :-1 designates the vamp of a shoe, extending upwardly from the inner portions of which is a tongue The tongue and vamp are formed in one piece and the vamp extends from side to side of the shoe without any opening, so that the necessity of any fastening means is obviated.

3 designtes a back foxing which is suitably connected at its forward side edges with the rear side edges of the vamp 1, as by stitching 4, it being noted that the stitching or connection between the vamp and back foxing terminates at a point adjacent the tongue 2, as at 5,

6 designates an opposite and counterpart back foxing which is connected to the vamp, in a manner similar to that already described with respect to the back foxing 3.

It will be understood that the sole, the heel, and the other ordinary parts of the shoe, may be formed and connected in any desired manner. 7

Both of the back foxings have extensions which reach upwardly a suitable distance to form the opposite sides 7 and 8 of the leggmg, and the rear edges of the back foxings 3 and 6 and of the extensions 7 and 8 may be connected in any suitable or desired manner. I have shown them as provided with the back stay 9 which is secured to the back foxings and also to the extensions 7 and S to provide a suitable finish to the connection between them. i

10 designates a flap carried by one of the extensions, as for example, the extension or side 8,.which flap extends outwardly from said side 8 at a point spaced from the termination 5 of the connection with the vamp 1, is adapted to be extended around the front of the leg and to overlap the other side member 7 passing over the tongue 2, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2, and is further adapted to be secured in any desired manner to the overlapped extension 7.

As here shown, I have provided straps 11 and buckles 12 common to the flap and over lap extension 7, which serve as a means for detachably connecting the parts when in position.

I provide a Ushaped recess or notch 13 at the lower extremity of the point of extension of the flap from the side 8 of the legging, in which the tongue 2 is seated and by means of which movement between the parts over the instep is provided, with the result that rubbing and injury to the instep of the wearer are prevented.

It will be understood that the shoe and legging are preferably formed of leather, and for the reason that the lower edge of that portion which extends around the front of the leg terminates at a point above the natural break of the foot at the top of the instep, and by reason of the fact that the seams connecting the back foxings with the vamp each lie in an approximately vertical plane passing through said point, I am enabled to provide great flexibility at the instep, with its evident resultant advantages, and also permit a tight engagement of the parts around the ankle to suitably support it. v

In some instances, it may be of advantage to close the space between the tongue and the inner walls of the sides 7 and 8 of the legging to prevent water or moisture from reaching the interior, and in Fig. 4, I have shown a bellows-like connection between the tongue 2 and the sides 7 and 8 which I form by the angularly extending wings or

14 and 15 which project from the tongue 2 and are connected, as at 16, with the sides 7 and 8 of the legging. By reason of the above construction, it will be seen that by disengaging the fastening means between the flap l0 and side 7, the legging may be thrown open into the position seen in Fig. 4. for ease of putting on or removing the shoe, the connection between the sides of the legging.

It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful combined shoe and legging, which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description, and while I have, in the present.
