CAR-DOOR HINGE AND FASTENER.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 21, i915.
Appiieanon 'sied January ae, 1914. serial Nb. siasee.
Be it known that I, Friono CELESTINO SAC- oAGGIo, a citizen of the Argentine Republic, and resident of Talleres, Ferro Carril Sud, Argent-ina, vhave invented new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Hinges and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to hinges and means for securing the doors or hinged sides or ends of railway cars and other vehicles.
According to this invention the hinges of a vertically swinging door or the like the straps of which hinges preferably extend from below'theb'ottorn of the door to'n'ear the top thereof are pivoted or hinged to the fra-me of the 'car and preferably to'a' bracket fixed to the sole plate or s'oleb'ar or other appropriate part ofthe vehicle, to which bracket or part is also hinged vor loosely co'nnected at a lower level than the fiilcrum yof the hinge, one end of a 'strut or support'the other end of which is connected to the hinge strap or the doorl in such ya manner as to allow both Vthe hinge andthe strutto turn freely on their respective fulc'ra f'o'rop'eni'ng and closing purposes without jamming or locking, suitable locking means being also provided for holding the said strut and with it the door in the upright or closed position.
The locking means may operate automaticallyv to lock the strut during the last part of the closing movement of the door and preferably comprises rotary cam which may also be operated by a lever.
In order that the invention may be easily understood reference is made to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a vertical transverse section on the line II Fig. 2 of part ofa railway freight car with ay hinged or vertically swingingy door provided with a hinge and strut made. according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation'and Fig. 3 is a cross section of the hinge on the line 'III-- IH, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of parts of the locking or retaining device seen in Fig. ll. Fig. 5 isa front view of Fig.` l and an enlarged view of parts seen in Fig. 2. Fig. 6 isa diagrammatic end elevation of a railway car with the invention Vapplied thereto. Fig. 7 is a vertical transverse section of part of a railwaycar with a modified construction of hinge and strut rand Fig. 8 is aside elevation of saine.
In carrying the invention into effect and as shown in Figs. l to y6, the bracket a is fixed to the outer vertical'face 0f the soleplate o which may be of wood or of steel of C section or of other appropriate section and the hinge strap c which as shown in Fig. 3 is suitably made LJ shaped in cross section with lateral flanges d ,d is fixed or bolted to the door@ vand hinged or pivoted .to the upper lug f on the bracket a..` The bracket is moreover provided with a horizontal flange 'gv which takes over and rests on the sole plate o.
The hinge strap c is suitably forked at the hinge end as indicatedby the dotted lines marked i inFig. 2 and is connected `'to Ithe hinge part or lug f on the upperpart of the bracket t by a pintle z', the said lug or hinge part f having a projection* or hooked portion 7e' (see also Figs. l, Land 5) which is cleared by the hinge when the door is swung downward owing to the forked formation of the hinge. The lower part of thebr'acket a; alsohas a hingepart or lug Z thereon and a bent strut m with two flanges n; a is pivoted atits lower forked` end by a pin'tle o to the said lug Z and is disposed in front or outside of the hinge strap 0. The axis ofy this pintle 0 suitably lies in the vertical planewhich contains the axis of the pintle z' of ythe 'door hinge c, or the axis of thestrut hinge may liein va vertical plane in front of the axis of the door hinge. The upperl part of the strut m is bent inward toward the door e andis suitably provided with twoinwardly projectingV lateral lugs p (Figs. 1,2 and 3) which loosely embrace the flanges Z on the upper part of the hinge strap c, Asuch lugs .p being so constructed as to VInovefreely on the hinge strap c and without ,jamming against lthe door. The strut is also slotted as at j to allow it topass over thehook lz. l i
The pintlespzl and o, von which .the door e and strut m are respectively mounted, are at some distance from each other, ythe door when turned upward or; downward describingan-arc such, as g (Figs. l and 6) while the strut describes an arc suchl as 1'. Consequently the connection between the,Y door e andthe strut m must b e loose enough to permit the strut to slide on the hinge strap c ai of Ithe door when the latter is being raised or lowered'. In order to lock the door in the closed or upright position the'flanges n of shown takes into the recess of the projection or hooked member la' If the lever s be.
raised, Vthe semi-'cylindrical portion o revolves and passes out of the recess or hook 7s aforesaid so that when the strut is turned outward the semicylindrical part o will clear the nose of the hook. Thusthe strut m and with it the door e is then free to be swung down to the opened position of theV door seen in dotted lines in Fig. l. In this position the lever s hangs downwardly. When the door is raised for the purpose of closingV it, the leverremains'in a hanging down position for a time, but before the door reaches the upright or vertical position, the right-hand side of the cam a comes into contact with the hook la whereupon, owing to the continued closing movement of the door, the cam together with the lever s is forced to turn on the trunnions t in a clockwise direction, so `that the lever assumes an elevated position and the cutaway portion of the hubu will allow the strut n, to pass over the hook, the hollowed side of the cam 'v meanwhile being adapted to roll over the point of the hook. As soon as the door reaches the vertical position and the strut has passed over the Vhook c the door will be automatically locked because when the cam 'o has rolled to the inner side of the hook, such cam will be released and the handle s will drop of its own accord and bring the *part o into the locking position shown clearly in Fig. 4. f Y
in Figs. 7 and 8, the strut is made of two double links w fw and :v and instead of the strut being slidably connected to the hinge of the door e, it is hinged or pivoted to the lug .a on the part g/ of the door hinge. The strut and the door are locked in position by a fastening such as hereinbefore described, the trunnions t in thisl case serving as the hinge pins connecting the links w fw and .fr together the parts beingsecured for example by washers 1 andi-pins 2.i Other appropriate fasteningsA or locking devices Vmay be employed however.
With slight modification the 'constructions hereinbefore described may be adapted to the ends of wagons which may fold or fall inward instead of outward.
What I claim is 1. The combination with thehinge'of a vertically swinging carA door, of Ya strut hinged at one end to the wagon at some distance from the fulcrum of the said hinge,
the otherjend of said strut being connected to the door in such manner as to allow'the hinge and strut to turn about their respec- Y -tive axes and means for holding said strut and with it the door in the closed position. 2. The combination with the hinge of a vertically swinging car door, of a strutY hinged at one end to the wagon at some disy tance beyond the axis of the said hinge,.the
other end of said strut being connected tothe door hinge in such a manner yas to allow the hinge and strut to turn about their respec-V tive axes, a projection on the fixed part of the door hinge and locking means mounted on the strut and adapted to engage with and be disengaged fromv said projection.
3. The combination with the hinge vof a vertically swinging car door, of a strutl Vcam rotatably mounted onthestrut and adapted to be engaged with and disengaged from said projection. Y
4f. The combination with the hinge of a vertically swinging car door, said hinge strut hinged at one endKV to the wagon 'at some distance below the axis of the door hinge, and slidably connected at thek other end to the hinge in such a lmanner asv to allow fthe door and strut torturn simultaneously about their respective axes, a projection on the fixed part of the door hinge, a locking cam rotatably mountedY on the strut and adapted to engage with said proe I jection, and a lever connected with said cam Y According to a modification and as shown some distance below the axis' of the'Y doorV hinge, the other end'ofsaid strut having lugs, said'lugs loosely andslidably embracing the hinge part on the door in Vsuch a manner 'as to' allow the door and strutfto turn simultaneously about their respectiveY axes, a projection on the fixed'part of the door hinge, and a'locking c am'rvrotatably mounted on the strut and adapted to engage with said projection. Y' I 6. The combination with the hinge of a izo vertically swinging car door, said hinge comprisinga forked member pivotedto the xed hinge part on the wagon, of arigid strut hinged Yat one end tothe wagon at some distance below the axis of the door` 95 comprising a forked member pivoted to the fixed hinge part on the wagon, of a rigidV hinge, the other end of said strut having lugs, said lugs loosely and slidably embracingvthe hinge part on the door in such a manner as to allow the door and strut to turn simultaneously about their respective axes, a projection on the iXed part of the door hinge and a lever having a cam of semi-cylindrical and hollow form such lever being rotatably mounted on the strut for engaging the cani with and disengaging it from said projection.
