CAR-DOOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODORE A. .ConsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, in the county of Ashley and State of Arkansas, have invented an Improvement in Car-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
-My invention is an improvement in car doors, and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawing forming a part hereof, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a car provided with my improvement, showing the door in closed position. Fig. 2 is a side view showing the door in opened position. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section of the door and supporting parts showing the door partially disengaged from the opening. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the door entirely disengaged. Fig. 5 is a detail of one end of the fastening device for the door; and Fig. 6 is a section on the line 55 of Fig. 5.
In the present embodiment of my invention, the car A is provided with a door opening a and above the door opening is a track a, the said track being substantially U-shaped in cross section, and having the overlying flanges a for a purpose to be hereinafter described. The sides of the opening are provided with the usual metallic facings a.
The door B is of usual construction and is adapted to fit within the opening, the upper edge of the door being provided with dowel pins 1) for engaging openings at in the upper edge of the door opening when the door is completely within the opening. Bearings b are arranged on the outer face of the door, and within the bearings are journaled the arms I) of U-shaped links 12 the said U-shaped links being arranged transversely of the door and spaced apart from each other, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4.
A vertical bar is pivotally connected with the body portions of the links, in the present instance by passing said body portions through openings in the bar, and on the upper end of the bar is journaled a wheel 12 by means of a bolt 1), the said wheel engaging the track and being retained in place by the'overlying flanges a as shown in Figs. and 4.
A bracket b is secured to the door below the end of i the bar by means of bolts b and to the bracket is pivoted a handle b and a link b is pivotally connected to the handle and to the body portion of the adjacent U- shaped link, the bar b being slotted at its lower end as at b, to permit said pivotal connection of the link.
It will be evident from the description, that when .the handle is elevated, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the door will be swung downwardly with respect to the bar, thus disengaging the dowel pins from the openings, and disengaging the door entirely from said opening, so
that the said door may be slid to one side as shown in Fig. 2, to permit free access to the car.
A fastening device is connected with the lower end of the door, the said device comprising a transverse shaft 0 journaled in bearings c onthe door, and provided at its ends with lugs 0 adapted to engage and disengage under-cut openings at in the metallic facings at the sides of the door opening. The central portion of the shaft is cranked as at 0, whereby to oscillate the shaft to engage and disengage the lugs from the under cut opening, and a U-shaped bracket b is secured to the door by the bolts b above the shaft, and in position to receive the cranked portion of the shaft between the arms of the bracket. The bracket 12 is also in position to receive between the arms thereof the handle b as will. be evident from inspection of the drawings, and the sides of the bracket are provided with alined openings 1), adapted to receive a pin 1), secured to the door by a chain b, whereby to retain said handle and crank in position, the bracket and pin thus forming a common securing means for the swinging devices and the fastening devices.
A rail (1 is secured to the side of the car below the door opening, and on the rail is slidably mounted a ring a connected by a safety chain a with the door, in order to prevent loss of the door, and the ends of the track are provided with lugs a for the purpose of retaining the wheel thereon.
It will be evident from the description that a door constructed in accordance with my improvement cannot be fouled by freight falling against the door, since it swings entirely clear of the door opening when being opened, and moreover may rock on a vertical axis owing to its being mounted on a single wheel. By supporting the door from a single wheel or roller, only a short section of track is necessary, and warping of the door will not impede the free movement thereof.
I claim:
1. The combination with the car having a door opening, a track above the opening, the upper edge of the opening being provided with recesses, a door adapted to fit within the opening and having dowel pins for engaging the recesses, hearings on the door, U-shaped links having their arms journaled in the bearings, a bar mounted on the body portion of the U-shaped links, a wheel journaled on the upper end of the bar and engaging the track, a bracket secured to the door, a handle pivoted to the bracket, a link pivotally connected with the handle and with the body portion of said lowermost II-shaped link, whereby to swing the door on the links, a fastening device for the door comprising a shaft journaled transversely of the lower end of the door and having a cranked portion at the center thereof, and lugs on the ends thereof, the sides of the door opening being provided with recesses for receiving the lugs whereby to lock the door, and a common securing device for the handle and the cranked portion of the shaft.
2. The combination with the car having a door opening,
i and a track above the opening, of a door fitted within the opening, "(I-shaped links arranged transversely of'thedoor and spaced apart from each other, hearings on' the door in which the arms of the links are journaled, a bar'pivotally connected to the body portion of the- LT-shaped links, a wheel on the upper end of the bar for engaging the track, means connected with the lower end of the bar and the door for swinging the door on the links, a fastening device for the door, and a common securing device for the swing ing means and the fastening device.
3. The combination with a car having a door opening and a track above the opening, of a door fitting within the opening, U-shaped links arranged transversely of the door and spaced apart from each other, hearings on the door in which the arms of the link are journaled, a bar pivotally connected to the body portions of the links, a wheel on the upper end of the bar for engaging the track, means con--- nected with the lower end of the bar and the door for swinging the door on the links, and an independent fastening device for the door.
4; The combination with the car having a door opening, and a track above the opening, of a door adapted to fit within the opening, LT-shaped links having their arms pivotally connected with the door, a vertical bar pivotally connected with the body portions of the links, a wheel on the upper end of the bar for engaging the track, means for swinging the door on the links and means for -fastening the door within the opening.
