WITNESSESI' INVENTOR sn er JOHN M. HOTHERSALL, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO J OHN Q. A. WHITTEMORE AND CHARLES WHITTEMORE, BOTH OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented-Sept. 21, 31915.
Application filed December 22, 1913. Serial No. 808,227.
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, New York, N. Y., have invented a certain new and useful Box; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to boxes.
It particularly relates to means for opening boxes for containing volatile materials, such as for containing blacking and polish. Such boxes are usually covered with a paint,
lacquer or enamel for decorative purposes,
which tightly seal the box and opener. This together with the fact that the covers and box tightly fit render the boxes diificult to open. I have provided a means whereby such boxes may be easily opened.
Figure 1 of the drawing illustrates a perspective view of the box and opener. Figs. 2 and 3 illustrate the manner in which the opener is secured in the body of the box. Fig. 4 is a side view of a part of the box.
1, Fig. 1, is the body of the box, 2 is the cover, and 3 is the opener. The opener is pivoted to the side wall of the body 1 of the box. The body 1 is provided with the usual bead 4 and the cover 2 is provided with the usual flange 5 which fits around the top of the body of the box 1 and above the bead 4. The flange 5 is provided with a flaring edge 6, with which the opener 3 engages in the operation of opening of the box. The opener 3 in itsmanufacture is provided with a comparatively large stud 7, which is struck up from the metal out of which the opener is formed. It is located in an enlarged portion 8 of the opener. The stud 7 is inserted in an opening 9 formed in the side wall of the body of the box.
The inner end of the stud 7 is then forced downward so as to form a riveting head 10, which clamps the side wall of the body of the box about the opening '9, whereby the opener will be pivotally secured in the side wall of the body of the box and below the flange 5, having'a flaring edge 6. The enlargement 8, together with the broad clamping head 10, incloses the wall of the body of the box about the opening 9 by a wide margin, thus perfectly sealing the opening 9 and preventing the escape of any vapors or material through the opening 9 around the stud 7. The stud '7 forms a bearing of large diameter which prevents the opener from becoming loose or being forced laterally in its operationv against the flange 5. The opener is also provided with a bearing flange 11, which extends substantially at right angles to the side of the opener 3. The flange 10 coacts with, the flaring edge 6 of the flange 5 and forces the cover off from the box when the lever is,turned about its pivot 7. The opener 3 may also be rovided with a finger piece 12. When it is desired to operate the opener the thumb or finger is pressed against the finger piece, which rotates the opener 3 about the pivot 7. This brings the flange 11 of the opener to bear against the flange 5 of the cover 2.
The construction shown and described may be greatly varied in the arrangements and connections of its parts and in the substitution of elements having equivalent functions, without departing from the spirit of the invention which is described in the claim in the language of the elements shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
In a box, the combination of a cover and the body of the box, the cover having a flange, the flange having a flaring edge, the body of the box having a relatlvely large opening, a lever opener, the sa1d lever opener having an enlarged portion, a stud struck up from the metal of the enlarged portion of the lever opener, the said stud extending through the said opening and having a flattened head of relatively larger diameter to secure the stud in the side wall in the body of the box and to seal the large opening of the box the lever opener hav ing a semi-circular end, a flange extending semi-cylindrically around the semi-circular end of the lever for engaging the flaring portion of the flange of the cover, and a. 10 finger piece at the other end of the lever.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing'witnesses.
JOHN M. HOTHERSALL.
