Be it known that I, FREDERICK M.' TUROK, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York, in the county of New York and'State of New York, have invented 'cer-. tain new and useful Improvements in Delivery Mechanism for Web-Printing Presses,
of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to, improvements in delivery mechanism for web printing presses, and has particular reference to machines in which the web after being printed and numbered in series is cut into sheets and folded for the formation of books; and the objects of the invention are to provide means for collecting the folded sheets, dividing the same into series corresponding with the printed numbers thereon, and delivering the sneets thus divided in a symmetrical manner with their edges in exact alinement; and further objects comprehend certain details of construction and arrangement of parts, including means readily adjusted by which the number of sheets comprising a series may be varied, and the dividing means likewise adjusted with respect thereto.
In describing the invention in detail refer-- once is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein similar characters of reference are used to designate like parts throughout the several views, and in which:

Between the frames is fixed a bearing-plate 10, which not only acts as a bearing for the lower set of tapes but also serves as a support for the sheet.

Below the folding rollers 19 and suitably Centrally of its width the plate is provided mounted forrotation in the frames, are a pair of shafts 20 and 21, each of which is provided with a fixed continuous spiral blade having a plurality of convolutions,
constituting a screw-conveyor, the blades of the conveyors being preferably of thin metal and, as herein shown, overlapping each other in close relation, the pitch thereof pro-- viding sufficient space to permit the free admission of the folded sheets 3, delivered from the folding-rollers. mounted in boxes 32, secured in such manner to the delivery-table 6 that the sheets may be freely delivered upon the latter in opposition to the slidable stop-board 33, which serves to maintain the regularity of the delivered sheets. I
As indicated in Fig. 1, the rotation of the conveyers is in a common direction, which movement-of the several blades thereof serve to urge the sheets separately a ainst a traveling stop, comprising a pair 0 endless belts 34, carried by rollers 35, journaled in suitably-positioned brackets and arms mounted on the frames. By a convenient band 36, the stop-belts are driven at a rate of speed corresponding substantially with the movement of delivery of thesheets. As the bottom edge of the folded sheets rest upon the rotatable conveyer-shafts and the blades thereof throughout their several convohitions frictionally engage the successive sheets separately, 1t Wlll be obvious that gage the edges of the delivered sheets adja cent the delivery end of the conveyers.
While the heads of the sheets are maintained in adjustment at the delivery end of the conveyer by the normal rotation of the latter, their opposite or foot-ends have, in some instances where large sheets are required, a tendency to be disturbed at the,
corresponding delivery point by the upward rotative movement of the blade on the conveyer-shaft 21, and to obviate this action of the blade-end a controller is provided, including a lever-arm 40, pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on the fulcrum-pin 41, secured to the'inside of frame 4. For actuating this arm a connecting-rod 42 is pivotally connected at one end to the upper end of the former at the point 43, while the opposite end of the rod is provided with a strap 44, surrounding an eccentric 45, fixed upon the shaft 17, which effects a backward and forward reciprocation of the lever-arm at each rotation of the conveyer-shaft. At the lower end of the 'arm are secured resilient spring-metal fingers 46 and 47, which reciprocate back and forth, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1,.and the free ends thereof bear directly upon the surface of the conveyer-blade. Upon their upward move-,
ment the fingers pass between the sheet and conveyor-blade and separate the sheets from the blade, overcoming thereby the lifting tendency of the latter upon the foot portion of the sheets. In its rotation the spiral conveyer-blade forwardly bends the several resilient fingers, engaging the same gradually at points nearing their connection ends, and effecting a spacing between the free separation of the sheets from the latter.- At about the beginning of their downward movement the fingers are releasedfrom the delivery end of the conveyer and spring back against the succeeding sheet, serving to hold the same. against its respective portion of the conveyer and'urge it downwardly in'opposition to the upward motion of the latter. The blade at the delivery end of the conveyer is provided with an open slot 48, which is adapted to receive and release finger 47 operating on the-upper portion of the sheets, at an earlier period than that '.for fingers 46 which act upon the lower porends thereof and the conveyer-blade for the tion thereof, the latter fingers serving at this period to advance the foot portion of the delivered sheet while finger 47 urges the succeeding undelivered sheet in the opposite direction against the conveyer-blade, as more clearly shown in Fig. 4. It will be evident that the regularity ofadjustment of the sheets as delivered from the conveyer may be readily controlled by the action of the fingers which serve the double purpose of urging the undelivered sheets downward successively and spacing the same after delivery beyond the disturbing action of the upwardly-moving blade-end. To further insure this separation from the conveyer, a spacer is provided which engages the foot ends of the delivered sheets at their bottom edges successively and serves to further advancetthe same from the position obtained by the flexible fingers. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, 5 and ,6, the spacer comprises a swinging dog 49, hinged by the'pin 50 to the head 51 and normally held in a vertical position thereon by a coil spring 52, which surrounds the pin, the ends of'the spring respectively engaging the head and the dog and urging the latter backward to the limit of its movement controlled by the stop-lug 53, formed thereon and arranged for engagement with the head in a recess formed in the latter.
The head is supported for horizontal reciprocation by the integral stem 54, slidably mounted in the box 55, the stem being constructed with a reduced terminal portion to provide a shoulder therefor within the box and to slidingly receive a compression.- spring 56, the ends of which respectively engage an endwall of the box and the shoulder of the stem to normally urge thehead and its connected dogin the direction of the conveyer. For thefu'rther support of the spacer, the box 55 is secured to one end of a lever 57, pivotallymounted intermediate its ends upon a pin 58, fixed to the'deliverytable 6, the opposite end of the lever. being engaged by a drive-pin 59, fixed to a disk formed on the forward end of conveyer shaft 21 exteriorly of its reduced journal. A fixed stop is provided for the engagement of the actuating end of the lever for limiting the downwardhnovement thereof, and to the latter is secured one end of a tension spring 61, the o posite end being conveniently fixed to the elivery table. For gfiordinga clearance between the spacingtion of the successive sheets at their oint of delivery, the spacer-head 51 is provi ed with a projecting lug 62, which engages the blade below the bottom line of the sheets, and also serves as a contact point to receive the thrust of the conveyer at each revolution thereof for the advancement of the spacing head and dog in opposition to the compresslon spring 56, which latter at the terminal edge of the shaft 64, and the wheels and the conveyer-blade for the recep-,
conveyor is free to backwardly move or return the dog. At about the beginning of this backward movement the drive-pin 59 on the end of the conveyer-shaft engages the actuating-arm of lever 57 and depresses the spacing-dog 49 against the action of the tension-spring 61. As thus depressed the rearwardtop portion of the dog engages the sheet about 'to be delivered and the terminal edge of the conveyer, the latter serving as an abutment in connection with spring 56 to forwardly turn the dog about its hingepin 50 in opposition to the coil-spring 52. By this turningmovement of the dog its downward motion or depression may belimited, and its backward or return movement readily accomplished, in which latter relation by the reaction of the hinge-spring the dog will assume its normal upright position behind the following sheet. and serve to advance the same in the manner heretofore described. 4
For dividing the sheets into series corresponding with the printed numbers thereon, a plurality of division-cards 63v are employed .which are supplied to'the machine at therear of the conveyers and supportededgewlse upon a pair of cam- shafts 64 and 65, mounted for intermittent rotation in bearings 66, formed in the rear frame 5.-
centric 68, fixed to the outer end of the latter and engaging a roller 69 journaled upon a rocker arm 70, the latter being loosely mounted upon the shaft 64 and provided with a pawl 71, which engages the teeth of the ratchet-wheel for the rotation thereof. For driving the opposite cam-shaft 65, a
chain-wheel. 72 is secured to the rearward end thereof, and motion is transmitted thereto through the chain 7 3, the chain-wheel 74, and the interengaging gear wheels 75 and 76, the latter wheel being fixed upon cam- 4 and 75 fixed together andloosely mounted upon the conveyer-shaft 20. As thus arranged and suitably proportioned the gearing is designed to provide for the two cam-shafts a uniform rate of angular rotation inopposite directions. Upon-the forward ends of the camshafts are secured disks 77, each provided with a fixed cam-plate 78, having a thickness substantially equal to. that of one of the several division-cards'63, and against which the latter are successively urged by the follower-board 79, slidably mounted-on the several adjacent sha-fts'and forwardly urged by the weight 80, connected thereto by the flexible band 81, passing over. a conveniently- The divisionmounted guide-pulley 82. cards are composed of sufficiently resistant material to maintain their shape without appreciable flexure, and are adapted to be which engages the upper edge of an upwardly moving card and serves by rearwardly directing thesame against the upper edge of the adjacent stationary card to forwardly urge its bottom edge into the feed ends of the conveyers, the blades thereof being terminally reduced in diameter, as shown in Fig. 7, for the accommodation of the feeding action. The deflector 83 is secured upon a bar 84, carried by the frames of the machine, and to the bar are also secured a number of pendent friction-fingers 85, composed of thin spring material, adapted at their free ends to frictionally engage and arrest the excessive forward movement of the upper edges ofthe division-cards as fed to the conveyers to afford a clearance for the incoming final folded sheet of the series. As
the ends of the friction-fingers extend only slightly below the line of the upper edge of the division-card, the latter as forwardly moved by the conveyor will readily overcome the slight resistance offered by the fingers and be carried along and delivered with the sheets.

and that the desired number ,of sheets in the series must equal the number of teeth in the ratchet-wheel 67 or be a. factor thereof: Thus, if one hundred sheets are required for a series the ratchet-wheel will contain one hundred teeth and be operated one tooth by each throw of the eccentric; and if fifty sheets are required for the series the same ratchet-wheel may be utilized but must be advanced two teeth by the eccentric, neces- .sitating a correspondingly increased throw of the latter. For indicating the numbered sheets in a series as fed to the conveyer with respect to the number of teeth on the ratchet-wheel, the latter is provided with corresponding dial-lines or numbers adapted to register with the actuating pawl, and for timing the feed of the division-cards to effect the required division of the sheets as numbered a manually-operated handle 86 is secured to the outer end of cam-shaft 64: and serves to rotate the same, independently of its normal rotating means, and adjust the numbered teeth of the ratchet-wheel with respect to the pawl; and if for any reason the sheets in the series become disarranged I alinement.

In a sheet delivery device, in combination, means for folding a sheet, a delivery device comprising a set of rotatable screw conveyers disposed to receive said sheets and move them in the direction of the length of the conveyer, a stop at the end of said delivery device, and a moving stop disposed to receive the lateral thrust exerted upon the sheets by the rotation of veyers. p

A sheet delivery device comprising a set of rotatable screw conveyers, means for feeding sheets thereto, means for rotating said conveyers in a direction to advance said sheets, and a belt movable in the direction of the moving sheets adapted to coact and maintain the alinement of their side edges while being carried by said conveyers.
6. A sheet delivery device comprising a set of rotatable screw conveyers, means for feeding sheets thereto, means forrotating said conveyers in a direction to advance said sheets, a belt movable in the direction of the moving sheets adapted to coact and maintain the alinement of their side'edges, and means for separating the sheets at regular intervals.
7. A sheet-delivery device comprising a set ofrotatable screw-conveyers, means for feeding a multiple series of sheets thereto, a support for a plurality of division-cards adjacent said conveyers, and means for feed- .ing'said division-cards thereto for separatposed to collect and deliver a multiple series of sheets, of a cam rotatably mounted adjacent said conveyer and provided with a delivery portion coacting with the feed end of said conveyer, means supporting a plurality of division-cards for engagement with said cam, and means actuated by the movement of said conveyer for imparting intermittent-rotary movement to said cam.
10. In a sheet-delivery device, the combination with a set of screw-conveyers confor rotation and disposed to collect and deliver a multiple series of sheets,
of a pair of cam-shafts rotatively connected together, cams secured to the inner ends of said cam-shafts and provided with delivery portions coacting with the feed ends of said conveyers, means supportlng a plurallty of division-cards for engagement. with said cam, a ratchet-wheel fixed to one of said cam-shafts, and means actuated by the movement of the conveyers for operating said ratchet-wheel.
11. In a sheet-delivery device, the combination with a set of screw-conveyers connected together for rotation and disposed to collect and deliver a multiple series of sheets, of a pair of cam-shafts rotatively connected together, cams secured to the inner ends of said cam-shafts and provided with delivery portions coacting with the feed ends of said conveyers, means supporting a plurality of division-cards for engagement with said cam, a ratchetwheel fixed to one of said cam-shafts, means actuated by the movement of the conveyers for operating said ratchet-wheel, and a manually operated handle secured to the outer end of one of said cam-shafts.
12. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a rotatable screw conveyer, a delivery table positioned at one end thereof, and a wire toothed detent on said table adjacent the end of said conveyer to coact with the edges of the sheets to hold them out of engagement with the-conveyer after being delivered therefrom.
13. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a conveyer mechanism, a delivery table positioned at the end thereof, a plurality of detents carried by the said table'each comprising a wire toothed comb the teeth of which are bent in the direction of the delivery of said sheets whereby they engage their lateral edges at several points to hold them out of engagement with the conveyer after being delivered therefrom.

In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a conveyer, a table positioned at the delivery end thereof, and a wire toothed comb positioned on said table in line substantially with the center of said conveyer adapted to engage the middle of the bottom edge of the delivered sheets to prevent retraction there- 15. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a receiving table and a detent mounted thereon comprising a wire toothed comb provided with a suitable backing and having the free ends of the teeth bent in the direction of delivery.
16. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a rotatable screw conveyer, and means coacting with the final turn of said conveyer adapted to separate the sheets from said final turn to prevent the same being carried upwardly and around thereby.
17. In a sheet-delivery device, the combination of a rotatable screw-conveyer, a sheetcontrollercomprising a plurality of fingers supported for yielding engagement with the delivery-end -of said screw-conveyer, and
means for varying severally thegperiod of engagement of said fingers.
' 18. In a sheet-delivery device, the combination of a rotatable screw-conveyer, a sheetcontroller comprising a plurality of springfingers supported for engagement with the delivery-end of said screw-conveyer, and means for impartinga vertical movement to said fingers.
19. In a sheet-delivery device, the combination with the delivery-end of a screw-conveyer, of a lever-arm pivotally mounted adjacent thereto, a plurality of spring fingers carried by the lever-arm and engaging said conveyer-end, and means for oscillating said lever-arm.
20. In a sheet-delivery device, the combination with the delivery-end of a screw-conveyer, of a sheet-spacing dog mounted for yielding engagement therewith and adapted to engage the rear of the delivered sheets successively and hold them out of contact with the final turn of the conveyer. 21. In a sheet-delivery device, the comb1- nation with the delivery-end of a screw-conveyer, a supporting-box vertically movable adjacent thereto, a sheet-spacing dog slldably mounted in said box and adapted to engage the rear of the delivered sheets successsively, and a spring in said box arranged to yieldingly urge said dog into engagement with said screw-conveyer. 22. In a sheet-delivery device,.the combination with the delivery-end of a screw-conveyer, of aplurality of vertically-movable spring-fingers adj acently mounted for engagement therewith, and a sheet-spacmg dog mounted for yielding engagement with said conveyer and adapted to engage the rear of the delivered sheets successively.
23. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a rotatable screw conveyer, a support for a plurality of division cards ad acent one end of said conveyer, and means for feedmg the divisional cards to said conveyer at regular intervals.
24. In a sheet delivery device, 1n comblnation, a double screw conveyer, a support for a plurality of division cards ad acent one end thereof, stop means interposed between the cards and the conveyer, and means for raising the cards over said stop.

In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a conveyer means adapted to carry a folded sheet to a receiving table, a support for a plurality of division cards adjacent one end of said conveyer, and means for driv ng the conveyer and simultaneously delivering the division cards thereto at regular intervals to be carried with the folded sheets to a delivery table. i

In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a conveyer adapted to carry a plurality of sheets positioned on one edge thereof, means for maintaining the alinement of sa1d sheets, a support for a plurality of d1v1s 1on cards, and means for simultaneously drivmg the conveyer and the guiding means and also feeding the cards to the conveyerat regular intervals. v
27. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a conveyer, a receiving table at one end thereof and a support near the opposite end for holding a plurality of division cards, means for feeding the folded sheets to said conveyer, means extending along one side of the conveyer for maintaining the alinement of the folded sheets, means for feeding the division cards at regular intervals to the conveyer, and means for simultaneously driving these mechanisms.
28. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a conveyer, a receiving table at one end thereof and a support near the opposite end for holding a plurality of division cards, means for feeding the folded sheets to said conveyer, means extending along one side of the conveyer for maintaining the alinement of the folded sheets, means for feeding the division cards at regular intervals to the conveyer, means for simultaneously driving these mechanisms, and means adjacent the end of the conveyer for holding said division cards in compact relation.
29. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a screw. conveyer, a receiving table near one end thereof, a support for a plurality of division cards near the opposite end, means for holding the division cards in compact relation, means for feeding the cards at regular intervals to the screw-conveyer and between the sheets carried thereby, and means at the opposite end of the conveyer adjacent the edge of the receiving table for holding the folded sheets and division cards out of contact with the final turn of the conveyer.
30. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, means for cutting a web into sheets, means for folding the sheets transversely, a screw conveyer, means for feeding the folded sheets to the conveyer, movable means for maintaining the alinement of the sheets while being carried by the conveyer, means for feeding division cards to the conveyer and between the sheets carried thereby at 1 regular intervals, and means coacting with the final turn of the conveyer for preventing a the sheets from being carried upwardly by the final turn thereof when delivered from the conveyer.

In a sheet delivery device, in combination, means for cutting a web into sheets, means for folding the sheets transversely, a screw conveyer, means for feeding the folded sheets to the conveyer, movable means for maintaining the alinement of the sheets while being carried bythe conveyer, means for feeding division cards to the conveyer and between the sheets. carried thereby at regular intervals, a receiving table near the delivery end of said conveyer, means coacting with'the final turn of the conveyer for moving the sheetsout of engagement therewith, and a toothed comb positioned upon said table engaging the edges of said sheets to prevent retraction thereof.
34. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, means for cutting a web into sheets and subsequently folding same transversely, a screw conveyer adapted to receive the folded sheets, a movable guide for maintaining the alinement of the edges of said sheets, and
means for feeding division cards thereto at regular intervals, all of said means being connected, whereby they operate simultaneously.
35. In a sheet delivery device, in combination, a cutter for severing a web into sheets, a folder adapted to engage the sheets, a screw-conveyer positioned beneath the folder for receiving the folded sheets, a receiving table near the end of the conveyer, a support near the opposite end of the conveyer adapted to hold a plurality of division cards, means for holding said division cards in compact relation, means geared with the folder mechanism for feeding the division cards to the conveyer at regular intervals,-
in compact relation, means geared with the folder mechanism for feeding the division cards to the conveyer at regular intervals, spring fingers coacting with the final turn of the conveyer for moving the leaves out of contact therewith when delivered, and a plurality of means mounted upon'said receiving table for preventing retraction thereof.
