Yballwhomit may concern:
Be it known that 1,.Hanny A. TAYLOR, a citizencf the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and. Stateof New Y;ork, have invented certain .new .and useful Improvements. in Gloves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relatesbroadly to new and useful improvements .in gloves, and .more
particularly to gloves made from either- It is wellknown that in nearly-all gloves the thumb is formed from a blankseparate from the blank from whichv the hand portion and fingers Y'Of theglovegare .formed, and such thumb blank is united to the .body of the glove by. a seam ,passing from between the thumb andindex fingerion theIback-of the .glovearoundthe base ofthe thumb to a point either .in;tl1e,pal1n, or .ata point between .the thumb andthe index finger on the front or palm portion o'f ,theglove. .llhis seam is objectionable, particularly in the case -:of tight fitting ;gloves, because the seam stretches lessthanthe body ofthe glove so that when the gloveis worn the. seam presents a ridge, causing the base of thethumb tohave an unsightly .swollenor pufied appearance.
It is, therefore, theprimary ObJGCi] ofthis invention to provide a glove in which the portion from .which the thumb is formed appearance of the thumb; above'mentioned will be obviated.
The inventlon consists in the 11l1PICOV8- ments to be more fully described herein after, and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.
I have fully. and clearly illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings to be taken as a part of this specification, and wherein Figure 1 is a plan view of a palm face of a glove made in accordance with my invention, showing the rear and side portions of the thumb. Fig. 2 is a detailed view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the thumb bent back to show the inner face thereof, and the entire palm. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a glove is made. 4c is a detailed view of an insert for 'forminga portionof .the palm, and the innerfaceof the thumb of. the glove.
.Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, 1 designatesin general .a glove embodying myiinvention and having aback 1?, fingers 2,. palm. 3,;and. wrist portion 1,.the latter having theclosure 5 adaptedto be securedabout the wristofthe wearer by any suitable form of fastener indicated generany at 7 designates the thumb .ofn-the ,glove, 1 the back 8 of which, it willbeinotechis formed at its base integral witlrthe blank from which the back, :palm and wrist are formed, the .thumbbeing formed hyfisaid back port10n8 and aninner portion 9, the back. and inner portions being ;united by sidestitch lines 10, 10 Theblank .9Qforming theinnerface of the thumb terminatespreferably at the, crotch between. the .thumb and .-index finger Where it is joined bya line of stitches 11 tolthe base of.the triangular insert piece 12, thesides of..said.triangle :being stitched to the palm faceofptheglove by stitchlines 13, 13, and theiapex 14 of said triangular piece terminating {at i the juncture .between the index finger and the middlefinger.
Having briefly described the general construction of the completed glove, I will now describe the blanlnfrom .which'itis made and the mannerof. making the glove from; said blank. The blank from. which :thegloveis made is shown in Fig. .3, and inthisfigurethe body of the blank .isshown .assembodymg a side sect1on15, sin-intermediate section 16, and a second vside. section .17, which. sections are adapted tobe folded over on the intermediate section along the dotted lines18, 19, to form the palm of the glove and the inner faces of the -fingers, the intermediate section .16 constituting the back of the glove. The side section 15 is formed with a thumb projection 20, and a finger section 21, while the intermediate section is formed with a finger section 21" adapted to be united by stitch lines along the edges thereof to the section 21 to form the index finger. The section 16 is also formed with finger sections 22, 23 and 24: to form the backs of the middle, third and little fingers. The side section 17 is formed with a finger section 2% at the side next the fold line 19, with a finger section 22 at its outer edge, and with an intermediate finger section 23*,
which finger sections 22, 23 and 2%, when the side section 17 is folded over on the line When the side sections 15, 17 are folded over on-the intermediate section 16, the side line 15 of the thumb section 15, and the side line 17 of the section 17, form at the lower portion of the glove the edges of the wrist flaps, and at the intermediate portion are united alonga stitch line 26 located in the palm of the glove, the said stitch line terminating at the point 27, which, when the glove is on the hand, is at the juncture between the base of the index fingerand the inner edge of the thumb, from which point the edge 17 a passes along the stitch line 13 to the point of juncture between the index andmiddle fingers, and thence on along the seam uniting the front and back finger sections 22, 22 of the middle finger. From the point 26 the edge 15 of the section 15 passes along the inner edge of the thumb section '20, and is stitched thereto along the line 10 above described.
WVhen the side edge portion of the blank part 15 is folded over along the line 18 the outer edge of the finger section 21 is in a position for a portion of its length from the end'of the finger to'be sewed to the inner edge of the finger section 21 13, 13 and to close the inner face of the thumb and complete the latter,I provide a substantially diamond-shaped piece, such as shown in Fig. 1, preferably consisting of the two sections 9, -12, united by the stitch Copies of this patent may be obtained for line 11 set on the bias of the longitudinal axis of said insert for a purpose to be presently described. When the glove is completed this insertis stitched to the edges 13, 13, and the side edgesof the thumb piece 20, thereby completing the thumb and the palm of the glove. By having the insert in two pieces united by the bias line of stitches, a snugand sightly fit of the glove is provided at the portion of the palm between the forefinger and the thumb.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the UnitedStates is:
1. A glove made from a blank 'comprisi ing anintermediate portion constituting the back of theglove and back finger sections,
and two side portions constituting the palm of the gloveand palm finger sections, one
of said side portions having a part integral therewith forming the back of the thumb,
'said side portions being folded over on the 7 therewith forming the back-of the thumb,
said side portions being folded over the back of the thumb and united to form the fingers and a portion of the palm, and an insert forming the inner portion of the thumb and completing the palm, said insert being sub stantially diamond-shaped and extending lengthwise of the palm to a point at the juncture of the index and middle fingers.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two sub-' scribing witnesses. e
HARRY A. TAYLOR.
