' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WALTER J. VOLL- RATH and MAX M. COHEN, citizens of the United States, residing at Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, and at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, respectively, have invented a new and useful Receptacle-Cover, of whichtthe following is a specification.
Our invention relates more particularly to receptacle-covers formed of sections of glass and metal, respectively, a condition presented particularly in coifee-percolators wherein it is desirable that the top of the cover, which fits into the metal portion thereof, be trans'parentto permit the action of the percolator to be observed; and more especially to covers, the metal portions of which are of enameled wear.
While the glass top-portions of the covers may be caused to accurately fit the metal,
portions of the covers, where the latter are stampings, the desired fit of the glass portion of the cover cannot be obtained uniformly where the metal portion of the cover is enameled, without requiring subsequent relatively expensive operations on the enameled portions of the covers. Our primary object is to provide novel, simple and inexpensive means for securing the glass portions of covers in place on the metal portions thereof, and more particularly where the metal portions are enameled. Referring to the accompanying drawing Figure 1 shows by a view in broken sectional elevation the upper portion of a coffee-percolator, the cover of which is constructed in accordance with our invention, the section being taken at the line 1 on Fig. 2. 4 is a'broken plan view of the metal section of the cover, and Fig. 5, a face view of a contractible and expansible ring which we prefer to employas the securing means for the glass section of the cover, this ring being shown expanded, and the inner lower end of the said glass section being shown by dotted lines, this view representing the relation of the ring to the top cover upon expanding the ring to apply it to, or remove it from, said top section.
We have shown our invention as applied to a cover for a cofiee-percolator, wherein the cover is represented at 6. This cover, 1n accordance with common practice, is formed of a section 7 of metal, enameled in the construction illustrated, and a hollowtop section 8 of glass. The cover-section 8, at its lower end, is of circular shape in crosssection, and carries a flange 9, this coversection extending into the cover-section 7 through an opening 10 in the latter, and seatmg thereon at the flange 9. The openmg 10 ispreferably slightly larger than the diameter of the lower end of the coversection 8 and preferably contains recesses I 11 in its walls with which lugs 12 on the cover-section 8 are adapted to register upon the act' of assembling together the coversections 7 and 8 as stated.
For the. purpose of preventing accidental separation of. these cover-sections, we provlde retaining means cooperating therewith, which preferably are in the form shown and comprise an expansible and contractible ring 13 adapted to be applied to the portion of the cover-section 8 which extends into the cover-section 7, as stated, this ring preferably encircling the inner end of the coversection 8' between the lugs 12 and the marginal edge of the opening 10 and thuspreventing displacement. of the section 8. The ring 18 ispreferably. so formed as to grip the section 8, it being preferably formed of spring wire with overlapping ends 14: having deflected portions 15, shown as of eyeform, forming finger, grips, whereby the ring 13 may be readily expanded, against its inherent elasticity, by drawing the portions 15 toward each other, forlapplication to, or withdrawal, from the cover-section,

It will be readily understood from the foregoing, that by the use of our invention, the opening 10 in the section 7 maybe made of such diameter as to permit the glass section 8 to' readilv expand relative to theof the cover together.

What we claim as new and desire to by Letters Patent is- 1. A removable cover for closing an opening in a receptacle, comprising a metal section, having a central opening and -aglass dome extending into and'throu'gh said opening, and a spring ring coacting with the secure inner end of the dome and adjacent surface of said metal section forholding the parts ing in a receptacle, comprising a. metal s ection, having a central opening and a glassdomeextending into and through said openmg, said parts having coacting recesses and lugs adapted to register as the parts are as- I holding the parts tion, having acentralopening and a glass dome extending into and through said opening; said parts'having coacting'recesses and lugs adapted to register as the parts are assembled, and spring means engaging the lugs onone part and coacting with the adjacent surface-of the other part adapted to hold said partsof the cover together.
