Be it known that I, ANDREW F. Rosnm BERGER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have {invented certain new and useful Improveinents in Listing Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to listing devices, and more particularly to a device having a plurality of individual elements removably held in a common frame.

The salient objects of the invention are to provide a listing device of the type mentioned in which a plurality of cards may be removably held in a single frame; to so mount the cards that they may overlap so that a small portion of the over-lapped card may show; to permit a mounting for the cards which will serve to hold them in theframe; to space the overlapping card by means of the mounting; to permit of the ready insertion and removal of the mounting element with respect to the frame; to provide for the removable engagement of the cards with their mountings; to permit of a plurality of cards being used with a single mounting to provide a construction wherein plain rectangular cards may be employed; topermit of the ready. access to any cardor cards in the series; to permit of the insertion of a card in between other cards al ready in place; and in general to provide a listing device of the type mentioned which can be economically manufactured and rapidly assembled.

The invention further resides in various features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter disclosed.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a frame and cards illustrating one application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section through the frame and cards shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a pair of the cards and their holder detached from the frame. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical section showing the manner in which the cards overlap.

In systems employing overlapping cards it often becomes necessary to replace a card or to add an additional card thereto without changing the sequence of the separate cards in the holder. In the present invention I have avoided any necessity of changing the sequence by making the cards removable from their. holder, and also making the holders for the cards removable from the frame as shown in Fig. 1. The frame 1 has flanged edge portions 3 and 4 between which and the web portion 2 the end-portions of the holders are held. The frame preferably has a similar pair of flanges 5 and 6 upon the opposite side of the web portion 2 to permit of a plurality of the cards and their holders being employed upon both sides of' the web. The cards are hinged upon the holder by means of tabs 7 formed of metal or other suitable material and are adapted to swing on these hinge portions to position shown in dot-ted lines in Fig. 4, so that the underlying cards may be readily observed.

Referring in detail to the individual holders for the cards, it will be noticed that these holders 8 comprise a main body portion 9 having return bent flanges 10, extending inward but a portion of the length of the holder. The ends of these return bent portions are offset at 11 from the main portion of the holder and have an end portion 12 extending inwardly beyond the offset portion 11, a suflicient distance to receive two or more of the hinge members 7. In use the ends 13 and 14 of the holder are inserted beneath the flanges 3 and 4 or 5 and 6 of the frame. This may be done by inserting them from the end of the frame, but I preferably form the holder of a wire or other element having sufficient resiliency to permit of its being bent so that the end may be inserted at any portion of the frame, and will then spring back into place. The cards employed are provided with a metal tab or hinge portion 7 which has an eyelet 15 adapted to receive the free ends 12 of the holder. The cards are preferably formed of paper or other material which will permit of their being bent to engage the eyelets 15 with the free ends of the holder. The engagement of the cards with the holder may be made either before or after the latter is positioned in place in the frame. When the ends 13 and 14 of the holder have been inserted beneath the flanges of the frame they engage the adjacent holder as shown in Fig. 3, and thus the holders themselves serve to properly space the cards so that the lower end of each succeeding lower card will be observed. This space is preferably employed as anindex for the subject matter upon the cards.

In'using a listing device embodying my invention, the card desired can be ascertained from the index portion at the lower end and the next succeeding card above it turned upward as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. The separate cards in the system and their holders are thus readily removable for change or'replacement, and the device is"; one which possesses arwide range of ad ustin said frame, said means being engageable with said bearing portions by bending to temporarily contract its length to less than that of the distance between the bearing portions, said card having a detachable engagement with said holding means, and being engageable with said holding means in either the attached or detached positions of the latter.

2. The combination with a frame having spaced bearing portions, of a flexible card and means for removably holding said card in said frame, said means being engageable with said bearing portions by bending to temporarily contract its length to less than that of the distance between the bearing portions,-said card having a detachable engagement with said holding means, and being engageable with said holding means in either the attached or detached positions of -the latter, and said holding means being means comprising a flexible member having return bent ends forming spaced bearing ,engage the cards to space the same outwardly from the plane of the bearing portions when the latter are positioned beneath the guide flanges.

The combination with a frame having spaced guide flanges, of means for removably attaching a plurality of cards in overlapped position in said frame, said means comprising a flexible member having return bent ends forming spaced bearing portions at each end for insertion beneath said guide flanges, and continuations of said return bent portions, said continuations being offset and adapted to detachably engage the cards for holding the same outwardly from the plane of the bearing portions when the latter are positioned beneath the guide flanges.

The combination with a frame having spaced guide flanges, of means for removably attaching a plurality ofcards in overlapped positionin said frame, said'means comprising a flexible member having return bent ends forming spaced bearing portions at each end for insertion beneath said guide flanges, and continuations of said return bent portions, said continuations being 0E- set and adapted to detachably engage the cards for holding the same outwardly from the plane of the bearing portions when the latter are positioned beneath the guide flanges, and said spaced bearing portions forming a means for spacing the over-lapping cards to disclose a marginal portion of an adjacent lower card.

7 The combination with a frame having spaced bearing portions and a plurality of cards adapted to be removably secured to said frame, of means for securing said cards in said frame, said means comprising a wire member having a main portion of greater length than the width, of the cards and a return bent portion cooperating with the end of the main portion-to form a spaced bearing portion at eachend for engagement with the bearings on the frame, andspaced card engaging portions oflset from the plane of the bearing portions, said card engaging portions being of suflicient length to detachably engage a plurality of cards.
