BAG-FRAME.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 14, 1915.
Application filed January 4, 1915. Serial No. 330.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, FRANZ A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of NewJersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag- Frames, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to numerals of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to bag frames of the character in which two hinged frame members formed of channeled stock of uniform depth are used, and in which the manner of connecting the bag body and the inlay to the frame member, makes it highly desirable to keep the channel of said frame members free of obstructions, so as to avoid the necessity for cutting the edge of the bag body or inlay to clear suchobstructions. In order to accomplish this, it has hitherto been necessary to provide a frame member, the channeled portion of which, at that point where the bag fastener, with its actuating mechanism is secured, was of greater depth than the remaining portion of the bag frame member, which was objectionable because it resulted in the consequent waste of material and materially increased the cost of manufacture. In other cases, a box-like support was mounted on the top of a frame member of uniform depth, which carried the fastener with its actuating. mechanism, which was also found objectionable, for the reason that after the box-like support had been secured to the frame member, in many cases, it, with the attached fastener, became inoperative or separated from the frame member through careless manipulation. In order to overcome these difficulties, I employ a channeled bag frame member of uniform depth throughout, and secure to the under side of said frame member, an inlay-receiving or positioning element made from a piece of the same stock as that of which the frame members are made, and provide said element with means for centrally securing the same to the under side of the frame member, in such a manner that a portion of the inlay to which the bag body is secured, is positioned by said element and prevented thereby from entering that portion of the bag frame to which said element is secured, in order to provide ample room for the bag fastener mechanism, without the necessity of'cuttin the inlay.
With this object in view, the said invention consists primarily in the novel bag frame hereinafter set forth, and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and. combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the constructionof the same, all of which will be more fully described in the following specification, and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim, which are appended to and form an essential part of the same.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 represents a front view of a bag frame illustrating the preferred embodi-v ment of the principal features of the present invention. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of an inlay and the inlay-receiving or positioning element removed from the bag frame. Fig. 3 represents a transverse section, on an enlarged scale, said section being taken on line a"m of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow; and Fig. 4 represents a transverse section taken on line :cm of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views, to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now to the said drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the complete bag frame, the same comprising a pair of hinged or pivotally connected bag frame sections 2 and 3. These bag frame sections 2 and 8 are made from channeled sheetmetal stock, designed to receive the channeled inlay 4, to which is secured inany convenient-or desired manner, the bag body 5. The inlay-receiving or positioning element 6 is made from the same channeled sheet-metal stock that the bag frame members are made from, and is of such length and shape as to snugly fit within the space formed by the central portion of the main body member and the angular portions thefeof, which are lettered respectively 7 an 8.
In order to provide convenient and efficient means for securing the inlay-receiving or positioning element 6 to the under side of the frame member, the said element 6 has extendingupwardly from its upper side, a pair of integral lugs 9, of such a dimension as to fit snugly the inside ofthe channel of the frame member, and to have frictional engagement therewith.- In this manner,-the inlay-receiving or positioning its actuating mechanism, for the reasons element is frictionally secured to the under side of the frame member.
The inlays, to'which the bag body 5 is secured, by means of indentations 10, is pro- Vided with holes 11 near its ends, for the reception of rivets 12 which are passed through suitable holes formed in the hinged member of the bag frame member, and by means of which the inlay, With its attached bag body, is secured to the bag frame member. V r f s. V It will thus benoted that by the employment of an inlay-receiving or positioning ele ment 6, I am enabled to dispense with the use of a channeled-frame section, the channeled portion of which at that pointwhere the bag fastener with its actuating mechanism is secured, being of a greater depth than the remaining portion of the bag frame memher, in order-to keep the channel of said frame'members free of obstructions, so as to avoid the necessity for cutting the edge of the bag body or inlay to clear such 0bstructions. I have also been enabled by the use of this inlay-receiving or positioning element 6, to dispense with the box-like sup-v port, which was usually mounted on the top of a frame member of uniform depth, which box-like suppo'rt'carried the fastener with previously stated.
,By the use of the element '6; in the manner described, I am enabled to employ channeled-frame sections of uniform Width, such as are lettered respectively 2 and 3, and secure'to the frame member 3, a bag fastener, and to the frame member 2 an auxiliary locking mechanism, the actuating mechanisms of which are located in the channels of said frame members above the inlay-receiving or positioning element 6, without the necessity for cutting the edge of the bag body or inlay to clear such mechanisms.
It is not my intention to limit the invention to the precise details of construction shown in the drawings, it being apparent that such may be varied without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having described the invention, What I claim as newtand desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is: 1. In a bag frame, the combination with a frame section comprising a central member and'a pair of hinge members, of an inlay receiving or positioning element provided with retaining. lugs struck up out of said element, said retaining lugs having frictional engagement with the inside of the channel of the frame section.
2. In a bag frame, the combination with a channeled frame section comprising a central member and a pair of hinge members, of a channeled inlay-receiving or positioning element secured to the central member of the said frame section.
3. In a bag frame, the combination with a frame section comprising a central member and a pair of hinge members, an inlay-receiving or positioning element located at the central member of the said frame section, and an inlay located Within said frame section, a portion of which is received and p sitioned by said inlay-receiving or positioning element, and the ends of said inlay being secured in the ends of the hinge members of the frame section.
This specification signed and witnessed this 31st day of December, 1914.
