' SUPPLEMENTAL COVER FOR BOXES.
To all whom it ma i aonce m p c Be .it known that I, WAsHING'ro I. T1 JT' TLE, a citizen of theUnited States, IGSld-Q ing at Baltimore, Stat'e of'Mary'land, have i invented new f and useful Improvements in Supplemental Covers for Boxes, of which thefollowingis a specification.
My present invention relates .to s certain new and useful improvements in removable.
supplemental transparent covers for boxes,
as for instance boxes containing merchan-' dise sold from the original package, such: as cigars and other forms of tobacco, cand1es, cakes, fruits, etc.,wherein it is desirable to display the contents of the box/but at the pheric impurities. V
One object of the inventionis to provide a supplemental cover madeup of standard units that may be assembled as desired to form a cover of the proper size'tofit any same time protect the same from atmosboX, thus :greatly reducing thecost of manu-V facture of .the covers and'making it possible" to fill orders-morepromptly, as one set' of dies will be sufficient for a variety of sizes of covers, and the cover units may be manu factured in quantities and stored away for assembly into covers when desired.
Another object of the invention isz'to pro vide-a supplemental cover ofrthe type' referred to wherein no' special hingeifor the same is required, thecov'er being provided with rigid means for attachment to the ordinary hinged lid of thebox to which the supplemental cover is applied, and the said hingefor the box-lid serving also as the.
hinge for the supplemental. cover.
A still further object ofathe invention' is 7 I toprovide a supplemental cover of the char acter referred to wherein themeansfor attaching the same to the hinged lid of thebox serves also to maintain thesaid lid in open position while the supplemental cover is closed, opening of the said supplemental cover being accomplishedby 'downwa'rdaand backward pressure exerted upon the hinged lid' of, the box; orinother words, opening movement of the supplementalzcover is accomplished by moving the hinged lid;
The invention hasin view othermore orv less important objects all of which, will be madeclear in thefollowing detail descrip-l. 7 tion" thereof, taken in connectionwithfthe Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept '14:, 1915, Application filed October 3, 1913. a Serial No. 793,179, i
and wherein accompanying drawings, which are illus- I: tratlve of one embodiment of the invention,
Figure l is a perspective view of afboxi 7 of the inner corner units'of the cover-frame l show ng the means for attaching the, same to thewhinged lid ofthe box. Fig; 4;, is a bottom perspective of the same: Fig. '5,-is' a plan view of the blank" from which'the said corner section 1s made. Fig; 6, isQa detail 'pers'pectlve view of one of the outer corner units of the cover-frame. Fig. 7, is a bottom perspective of the same. Fig. 8, is a plan View of the blank from which the said outer corner unit isf rm'edJ F ig. 9, is a top plan view of the'supplemental cover complete Fig. 10,1s'a bottom plan'view of the "same. r 1
The supplementalcover as shown consists of a frame made up of sheetmetal units, extensibly connected, in order that frames '.of different sizes may be constructed from sa d units to, fit boxes of'fldifi'erent sizes, the 1 I .said frame carrying a transparent panel and provided also withfmeansfor removably a'b 'taching the frame to the hinged lid of the box, whereby rarwardi and downward movement ofthe lid will'cause thesupplemental cover to beraised; The said frame comprises a pair ofrearcorne'r units 10, of
right angular formation, each unit having an upwardly and rearwardly extending lid-r engaging and supporting member 12, ar'-' ranged at an obtuse angle thereto and formed integrally rigid therewith, said members l2,'each providedwith'an inwardly extendingflange 13, designed to embrace an edge of'the lid 14,0fthe box l5 asshownj The forwardly extending portion 10? of each a rear corner unit 10 is providedwith a down-j wa rdly eXtendingside flange l6, ha ving an upstanding portion 17, lyingparall'el with,
but spaced from 'thefiange 16,j to, provide a way for an interconnecting end spacer strip 18, of right angle formation'that hasafsliding or telescopingconnection with the said corner unit (and each unit is also provided a, i fa' a er l pflg, to pport th glass panel 20,". of theusupplementalcover. The laterally extending portion 10 of each rear corner unit isprovided withan overturned flange or, lip 21, overlying the upper face thereof, and with which a tongue 22, at the ,end of a rear spacer strip 23, may have a telescopic connection. The rear spacer strip 23, has a plate 24, formed integral there with; and extending upwardly at an obtuse angle therefrom, said plate 24, being pro- 1 vided at its opposite longitudinal-edges with overturned flanges 25, 26, with which the """by making punch indentatihns 32;
upwardly" and rearwardly extending "lid-en gagingmembers 12, of'the rear corner units may have telescopic connection, whereby the said corner units maybe brought closer togetheror moved further apart, while" at the same time maintaining telescopic connection "withtherear frame'spacer to accommodate 1 the frame-to boxes offdifferent length. The' said'laterally extendingportion 10 'ofeach rear corner unitis also provided with a downwardly extending"lip 21- struck there'- from, which lips constitute stopsor abutments to engagean'edge of andhold the hingedlid, of a1 sup transparent panel "20 within the frame.
The front corner units 27 of the frame of which there are'two in number, are of right angle formation andeach member thereof hasa downwardly extending flange 28, pro videdwith' 'an upturned portion 29, which upturned portion 29, constitute ways for the end spacer strips 18, and the frontspacer strip 30, each of which strips is of angular formation, or L shaped in cross-section, and
each ofwhich has a telescopicfconnection at its opposite ends with the corner units. The
, front corner units 27, like'the rear corner units are also provided with lateral lips 31,
that serve as supports to retainthe glass panel 20, fwithin the frame.
From the foregoing description takenin,
connection with the accompanying drawing,
i it Will'be seen that the frame comprises front and rear corner unitsand side and 'end spacer strips having telescopic connections" with' said corner units, and 'thatsaid cornerl; units maybe adjusted'towardand from each, other to provide corner-frames of different sizes. It willalso be seenth'atf'no specially provided-hinge is necessarywith my im provedconstructionof cover, as the cover frame is provided -with means for removably attaching. the samedirectly to the hinged lid "of 'thebox in such a-manner that thelidhinge servestalso as the hinge for the su plemental cover, andat; the, same time the said cove'r-engaging. or attaching means 'serves toumai'ntain the box-lid in open position and; also constitutes a means 1 for lifting the supplemental cover by'simply forcing the open box-lid rearwardly and downi wardly about the hinge.
By makingntlie frame of'sheet metal cor ner andspacer units of standard sizes, these" sembledinto. cover. frames. of different is; necessary, inasmuch as the each other, orin other words, are:
