FREDERICK EAGLE, OE BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EMPIRE BISCUIT 00., OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEVJ YORK.
DISPLAY COVER FOR CONTAINERS.
Application filed November 15. 1922. Serial No. 601,011.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK EAGLE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in a Display Cover for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a display. cover to be put on containers or receptacles containing merchandise, so that the contents of the container are protected from dust and from promiscuous handling, while at the same time such contents are readily visible and easily accessible to a clerk when he wants to fill an order from the contents of the container.
The cover is preferably separate from the container itself and readily detachable from it, so that when one container is empty the cover may be readily taken off and put in place on a full container. However, the cover may be more or less permanently at tached to the container, and thus may form a part of the container as manufactured.
The display cover comprises a frame for fitting over the container. To this frame is contents of the container.
hinged a cover portion and to this first cover portlon a second cover port on is hinged. With this construction when the second cover portion is lifted the'first cover portion is lifted with it. Means are provided for holding the two cover portions in the raised position, so as to permit access to the One or both cover portions mentioned above are provided with transparent panels, preferably made of some non-breakable material.
There is illustrated in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it should be understood this disclosure is by way of illustration, and that details thereof may be changed without departing from the spirit of the invention; for example, the side and disposition of the transparent panels may be changed considerably; the transparent panels could even be omitted, but it is preferred that at least one of the cover portions be provided with such a anel.
eferring now to the drawings, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the display cover in place on a container; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, when the cover is in the open or raised position; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
. The frame of the display cover is preferably made of sheet metal and comprises a front portion 1, a rear portion 2 and side portions 3 and 41. The lower edge of the frame is preferably bent back upon itself as indicated at 5, a formation which stiffens the frame and adds to its appearance. The upper edges of the frame elements 1', 2, 3 and 4 are bent inwardly as indicated at 6 to form a stifiening flange.
To the rear frame 2 is hinged acover 'portion 7 by means of the hinges 8. This cover portion comprises front and rear framing elements 9 and 10 and side framing elements 11, which are attached to each other at adjoining corners by riveting or solderingto form a substantially rectangular frame.
The framing elements. 9, 10 and 11 are preferably U-shaped and held between the two arms of these U-shaped elements is a transparent panel 12, preferably made of a non-breakable material such as celluloid or one of the non-inflammable transparent compositions of which cellulose acetate is the base. t
A second cover portion 13 c'omprlsmg front and rearframing'elements 14 and 15',
and side framing elements 16, is hinged by means of the hinges 17 to the first coverportion 7. The hinges 17 are respectively attached to the framing elements 9 and 15 of the two cover portions. The framing elements 14, 15, 16 are preferably made of sheet metal U-shaped in cross section; a transparent panel 18 is held between the arms of the U-shaped elements 1 1, 15, 16. The outer edge of the framing element 15 is bent upon itself as indicated at 19 and inserted in this bent portion 19 is a bridging piece 20 which covers the crack between the two cover portions and excludes dust when the two cover portions are closed, as shown in Fig. 1.
A finger piece 21 is attached to the front cove portion 13 as indicated.
Means are provided for holding the two cover portions in a raised or open position. This means comprises oppositely disposed pairs of lugs 22, each lug formed by cutting out and bending inwardly a portion of the side framing elements 3 and 1. The cutting out of these lugs provides the slots 23. Lugs 22 and slots 23 are arranged in oppositely disposed pairs; the front and rear lugs 22 and slots 28 of Fig. 1 respectively cooperate with the front and rear lugs 22 and slots 23 of Fig. 2. When it is desired to open the container, the front cover portion is raised, and its front edge allowed to drop into the appropriate pair of slots 28, onto thelu-gs 22, thus holding both cover portions open, as in Fig. 2. It is evident that the means for holding the two cover portions in the raised or open position couldbe varied considerably.
lVhile I have described my invention in some detail, it should be understood that it may be carried out in other ways, as e pressed within the scope of the following claims.
I claim as my invention 1. A display cover for a container "CO1D- prising a supporting frame for placement on the container, a cover portion hinged to the supporting frame, and a second cover portion hinged to the first cover porton, one of the cover portions being transparent.
2. A display cover for a container comprising a supporting frame for placement on the container, a cover portion hinged to the supporting frame, and a second cover portion hinged to the first cover portion, both of the cover portions being transparent.
3. A cover for a container, comprising a supporting frame for placement on the container, a cove portion attached to the supporting frame, a second cover portion hinged to the first cover portion, and means carried by the supporting frame for engaging-with the second cove portion for holding both cover portions raised.
4. A display cover for a container, comprising a frame for placement on the Icontainer, a cover portion hinged to the frame, a second cover portion hinged to the first cover portion and means carried by the frame for engaging with the second cover portion, both of the cover portions being provided with transparent panels.
5. A cover for a container, comprising a supporting frame for placement on the coin tainer, and a pair of cover elements hinged together, co-operatin therewith, one of the cover elements being movably mounted on the frame.
6. A cover for a container, comprising a supporting frame for horizontal placement on the container, a pair of cover elements hinged together, co-operating with the frame, one of said cover elements being inovably mounted on the frame. and means for holding the cover elements in the raised or open position.
7 A cover for a container, comprising :a supportng frame for horizontal placement on the top of the container, a pair of cover elements pivoted together co-operating with the frame, one of the cover elements being movably mounted on the frame, and means for holding the cover elements in an inverted V or open position.
8. A cover for a container, comprising a supporting frame for horizontal placement on the top of the container, a pair "of cover elements pivoted together co-operating with the frame, one of the cover elements being pivoted to the frame, means carried by the frame for engaging one of the cover elements for holding the cover elements in an inverted V or open position, andfa transparent panel carried by one of the cover elements.
