Description

EDWARD B. WINTER/S, 0F COFFEYVILLE, KANSAS, ASSIGNOR TU JOHNSON SPRING GAR/.TER C0., @F OOFFEYVILLE, KANSAS.

Speccatton of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept.. "Z, 1215.
Application led october 23, 1914. Serial No. 868,973.
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Coieyville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garters, of whichl the following is a specification.
My invention relates to garters, and is an improvement over the forms shown and described in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,022,21'?, issued to me April 2, 1912, and my applications for Letters Patent liled March 25, 1914, May 19, 1914, and d une 3, 1914, bearing Serial Nos. 339,523--and 342,682, respectively; in each of said forms l employed a bifurcated shield in connection with an inelastic leg band, and l retain such inelastic leg band in the' form shown and described herein, but l dispense with the said sneld and form' the webbing of the band into the equivalent of the shield, thereby producing a lighter, cooler, and more economical garter, wherein the possibility of separation oi' parts is practically eliminated, as the band from the shield in the older forms.
My invention is fully described in the ollowing specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts are designated by the same reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front View of a garter constructed in accordance with my present invention; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary, rear, view thereof; and Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
ln the drawings forming a part of this applicationl have illustrated a garter comprising a leg band 4 bent upon itself at 5 to form an angular hanger 6 securely stitched to the band proper at said bend by three rows of stitching 7, 8, and 9, in the form of a triangle, said hanger carrying the wire loop 10 of a conventional stocking clasp; the other end of the leg band is doubled and secured to an adjustable buckle 11, or equivalent, and provided with the ring member 12 of` the leg clasp. Engaging said ring member 12 isahookmember 13 of the leg clasp, said hook member being secured to a section of the same webbing forming the leg band and shown at 14, a portion thereotl being carried beyond the connection of the hook member therewith, as shown at 15, to prevent said member from coming into contact with the limb of the wearer; said section 14 is also bent on itself at 16 to form a hanger 17 and to which is secured the button 13 of the stocking, clasp, suitable stitching 19 being provided for this section at its bend, and l securely stitch the hangers 6 and 17 together at 20, and which stitches also serve to secure the loop member 10 in place. l may also form the entire garterof one length et webbing, and have so shown it, the webbing of the hanger 6 being passed through the slots of the button supporting plate, then turned upwardly to the rear thereof to prevent the metal thereof from touching the leg of a wearer, then formed into the bend 16 and extended sufliciently to carry the hook niember 13, but I do not stitch the hangers 6 and 17 together except at 20, in order to provide the pliable member for carrying the stocking clasp button 18 whereby said button may be connected with and disconnected from the loop member l0, and also to insure independent movement of the garter members directly above the stitching 20 for a reason to be explained.
Firmly stitched at 21 to one or both of the garter members is a wire ring 22, the ends of which are directed upwardly to form arms 23 and 24, the former of which is p bent to the left and formed into a hook which is stitched to the garter member at 25, and the latter of which is bent to the right and formed into a hook which is stitched to the other garter member at 26; the said ring 22 and connected arms is composed et' spring metal, and the normal action of which is to hold the garter members in the relationship shown, but permitting them to be drawn apart against the action of the ring 22 and connected arms, and said arms are so bent as to be kept within the edges of the webbing forming the garter in order to prevent the metal thereof from touching the leg of a wearer.
. It will thus be seen that I provide a garter composed of inelastic webbing but possessing all the elasticity of the conventional, elastic web, garter; it will also be seen that I dispense with the material of the conventional shield, usually silk or satin, and the labor of assembling the same, thus resulting in very great savings and enabling the production of a high grade garter in a very economical manner; it will also be seen that,
loo'
by forming the entire garter of one strip of webbing, I practically eliminate the tearing apart thereof, as no strain comes upon the stitching at the bends, all strain being taken by the4 Wire ring and its arms; further, no metal can touch the skin of a wearer, and
the garter is thus ada ted for all year use;
and still further, su cient give is assured in thebending of the leg of a wearer, and at the same time sufficient tension to maintain the le band in place. It will also be noted that te garter will last for many years without showingsigns of wear or losing its efficiency, even in slight degree, as there is no rubber to rot, and no friction at any point likely to cause Wear.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A garter formed of inelastic material encompassing the leg, the ends of the band so formed being bent upon themselves to form a hanger, said hanger being stitched together at a point intermediate the length thereof to permit free action thereof above and below said stitching, a member of a stocking clasp secured to said hanger at one point and a complemental clasp member secured thereto at another point, means for adjusting the length of the leg band, and elastic means holding said band at said hanger under tension.
2. A garter formed of inelastic material encompassing the leg, the ends of said band so formed being bent upon themselves to form a hanger stitched together at a point intermediate the length thereof, a stocking clasp connected with said hanger, means for adjusting said leg band, and a yoke of spring metal secured to said hanger adjacent the upper end thereof and the arms of which are secured to corresponding points on said leg band.
3. A garter, comprising a strip of inelastic material formed into a leg band, a member of a leg clasp adjustably held at one end thereof, the other end thereof being bent downwardly to form a hanger and upwardly to form a loop and again outwardly, a complemental member of a leg clasp held at said last named end, beyond said outward bend, a stocking clasp held on said looped portion, and a spring metal yoke secured to said hanger and to corresponding sides thereof to said leg band.
4. A garter, comprising a strip of inelastic material formed into a leg band, complemen'tal members of a leg clasp secured at the ends thereof, said strip being formed into a hanger at a point intermediate its length of double thickness, capable of independent movement, a spring metal yoke secured at its bend to said hanger and at its ends to corresponding vpoints on said leg band, on each side of said hanger, and a stocking clasp carried by said hanger.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDWARD B. WINTERS.
