lBe it known that I, GREELEY ELsWoR'rH LACKEY, a citizen of theUnited States, and a resident of Burlington, in the kcounty of Des Moines and yState of Iowa, have made certain new and useful Improvementsin Mattresses, ofi-which the following is a specic iication.

My invention is an improvement in .mattresses, and has for its object to provide a device of the character specified, wherein the mattress is composed of a series of similarY connected sections, each section being square Y and 5 are diagrammatic views, showingthe dierentmethods of `arranging the sections,

With the ordinary mattress, the arrangement is such that 'continuous wear is brought upon the opposite faces ofthe mattress, and in addition to the excessive wear brought upon the covering, the lling or stuiing ofv the mattress tends to gather in lumps, thus destroying the comfort' of the kmattress. In addition to the shortlife of the mattress because of the manner in which it is made, the mattress cannot be aired readily, because but the two surfaces of the mattress may be eX- posed to sun light and air.

The present embodiment of the invention asshown in Fig.k 1, is'composedy of a series of independent and similar sectionsjeach' section being square incross section and having four of its sides of equal area, and the sections are so connected, that all of the four sides of the sections may be brought into use.

As shown in Fig. l, the sections 1 of the mattress have a covering 2 of fabric material, and a stuffing 3 of any suitable material, as for instance hair, cotton, felt, straw, excelsior or the like.

The complete mattresses may be of any desired size, and the sections may be of a length corresponding to the length of the mattress desired, that is the long axis of the sections may extend longitudinally of the mattress, or the sections may be of a length Specification of Letters Patent.

In making the mattress, the sectionsare arranged alongside each other, as shown in Figs..1 and 2, `and each. section is connected to the succeeding section throughout the length of one corner of the said section, as shown at Vt, the connection being made in any suitable manner. n

As shown more particularly in Fig. 2, the first and second sections are connected yat their lower corners, whilejthe second and third sections are connected at their upper.

respect to each other, andl when the sections are. laid alongside 4each other, as shown in Fig. l, the alternatefhinge connections will be at@ the under side ofthe mattress,-while the intermediate hinge, connections 'will be at the upper side of thev mattress.

As before stated, the four sides of each sec-V tion are of equal size, and of the same size as the four sides of every other section, and vby properly manipulating the sections the several sides of the sections may be brought upward, so that the wear throughout they covering andy the mattress will be uniform, and so that the tendency of the stufling or filling of the sections to ball up will be eliminated.

Referring to Figs. 3, 4 and 5, wherein the` sections of the mattress from right to left are designated by the reference characters A, B, C, D, E and F, it will beseen that byipartially turning the sections A and B on their long axis in opposite directions, the hinge connections 4L between the sections which in Fig. 2 are downward are moved upward, as shown in Fig. 4, until the said hinge connections are at the upper` surface e of the mattress, as shown in Fig. 5.

The hinge connection between the sections B and C which was at the upper side of the mattress is brought to the under side, by swinging the sections B and C in opposite directions. In like manner the hinge connection between the sections C and D and the hinge connection between ythe sections E and F are brought upward, that is to the upperside of the mattress, while the hinge connection between the sections D and E is brought to the under side ofthe mattress.

By so moving the sections, that portion of the covering of thesections whichV in Fig. 2 is between the adjacent sections, and thus butlittle exposed to wear is now the kupper surf-ace of the mattress, and the former upper surface is now'betw'een'ithe sections. By reversing themattress as a whole, `that is by moving the mattress so that the upper sur face shownfin Fig. 2 is the under surface,

The improved mattress is in effect so far as concerns the covering two mattresses, since there are four surfaces any two of which maybe brought into position to receive the wear. The cross section of the sections will of course depend upon the thickness of the mattress desired, and the length of the sections will depend upon the widthor the length of the mattress being constructed. A

Preferably ya felt mattress will be composed of two or three portions, each portion Copies of this patent may be obtained for kconsisting of a series of sections connected as shown. Asfor instance, a mattress may be composed of'fifteen sections, and of the fifteen sections there willbe three lots or portions of five sections each. The five sections of each portion will be connected, as shown in Figs. l and 2. This arrangement is for convenience, since it will permit the easy handling 'of the mattress as a' whole, and will permit the mattress to be packed in a compact and small package.

In addition, by dividing the mattress into units and connecting the units in several series, a delicate woman can manipulate the single portions or sections of units without help,-either to change the wearing surface orto transport the portions or sections of units from place to place. Any one or all of the sections or portions may thus be eX- posed to the air, and without any particular exertion of strength. f

In practice, when the mattress is formed from more than one section, the sections lmayl be interchanged, to providel for yuniform wear, or either section may be replaced by a new one. The mattress may be tufted, tied or'quilted, to prevent shifting or matting of the filling.

A mattress section consisting of a series of connected units, the units being similar in shape and size, each unit having four equal sides, and the units of each section beingarranged alongside each other and connected together yby a hinge connection, the alternate hinge connections being at the upper side of the mattress, and the intermediate hinge connections being at the lower side of the mattress for the purpose specified, each unit consisting of a separate body and end covering and a lling.
