PENCIL-HOLDER.
To all whom t may concern.' f Beit known that I, WILLIAM V. OcCoN- Non, a citizen of the United Sta-tes, residing at Grand Forks, in the county of Grand Forks :and State of North Dakota, have invented newy .and useful Improvements in Pencil-Holders, of which the following is a specification,
. The present invention relates to vholding devices for pencils, pens .and .thelike In carrying out my invention I propose to provide a holder adapted to receive Y the pointed ends ofa pencil, fountain pen orthe like which is so constructedl and arranged as to .effectively protect the point against breakage as well as Yto securely retain the pens Vor. pencils against accidental removal. I also aim to kprovide a Ahold-er and protector for pointed instruments which shall include a pocket having its interior formed with spaced compressible members which so engage with the pointed end ofthe instrument as to sustain Vv.the same within ythe pocket without danger ofbreakage ofthe said point :and which alsof-rictionally engagewith the instrument vso that the same can only Abe removed from the pocket by a direct pull upon the instrument. ,c 4
It is a still furtherobj-ect yof .ther-invention to provide a protective holder for pointed instruments which may be easily and quickly vsecured to the vest or'other pocket of the clothing of the user which maybe adjusted so as to arrangegth'e point receiving pocket of the device in a convenient position to permit of the user readily grasping th-edesired instrument' to remove .the )saure from the protective pocket.
A still further object of the invention to provide a deviceof this character which shall embody the desirable features of simplicity in construction, cheapness in manufacture and thoroughV eiiiciency in operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the improvement resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts setJ forth in the following specification and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement, Fig. -2 is a sectional view approximately on the line 2 2 of Fig. l, Fig. 3 isa transverse sectional view approximately on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the improvement, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view approximately on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4,
' `Speccation of Letters Patent.
Application-filed May 5, 1915. Serial No. 26,134.
Patented sept. 7, i915.
Fig. 6 is a similar view approximately orA the line 6 6 of Fig. e, Fig. 7 is a longitudinal sectional view of the lining shown in F 9, Fig. 8 is a. vertical sectional view through the pocketillustrating a modification, and Fig. 9 is a vplan view of the pocket before the same is folded. c
In the reduction of my` improvement to practice, I provide a pocket of any desired or suitable `dimensions which includes an inner lining of comparatively thick compressible material which yembodies a desirable amount of resiliencyto effectively engagewith the opposite sides of an instrumentor the ,like -which is inserted in the mouth of the pocket. The inner lining, indicated by the numeral 1, may be constructed from a single piece or pad of rubberasillustrated in Fig. 9 of the drawing, the same bein g bentcentrally upon itself to provide the opposite side and lower walls and if desired, the yends of said material may be secured in any desired onpreferred manner.
However, in practice, I havefound that the ends of the lining 1 need not be connected,
but the said lining is provided, upon its inner face withk laterally extending spaced projections or teats-2. These teats vary in length, the longestbeing arrangedy at the bottom, and are indicatedby the numerals 3. The teats upon the sides graduallyv decrease in length kfrom the lowermost rows to the upper rows, so that a flaring or substantially V-shaped passage is provided between the teats. This construction is essential in successfully carrying out my invention, as the ,point of a pencil as wellzas-the end of a pen y is substantially cone-shaped, and the compressible teats as well as the compressible lining bear against the opposite sides of the cone-shaped end of an instrument within the pocket, while the longer teats 3 at the bottom of the pocket engage with the opposite sides of the point of the instrument to more directly afford a protection for the same, and further, should the said point of the instrument contact and lie upon one of the longer teats the same will be likewise f protected against breakage. Theteats are necessarily compressed by the insertion of the instrument and, to a certain extent, is also the lining 1. The teats permit of the point ofthe instrument being grasped not only upon its outer sides but upon almost its entire surface. the pocket, indicated by the numeral 4, is
The upper end or mouth of n provided upon the outer face of the inner lining with a continuous elastic or compressible Vband 5, and the opposite sides of the pocket, from the lower end thereof to a point at a determined and suitable distance below the elastic band 5 has secured upon its outer surface a continuous band of thin yieldable metal, indicated by the numeral 7.. Thep metal outer surface 7 has a tendency to force theopposite walls of the inner lining l toward each other, and if desired, and as illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawing, the teats may each have its outer end provided with a depression S, so that each of the said teatsy slot 13 through which passes the shank of a headed member 14, the said shank also passing through an opening in the supporting strip 9 and is engaged by a retaining element, such as a nutl. Y Y Y From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the
simplicity ofthe device, as well as the ad-v vantages thereof will, it is thought, be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which such invention appertains without further detailed description.
I-Iaving thus described the invention, what I claim is: j
1. A protective pocket for pointed instruments having a lining of elasticfmaterial, an.
outer facing of thin resilient vmaterial, a compressible band surrounding the mouth of the pocket, a holder strap connected with the facing, and means for adjusting the said holder strap.
2. A protective pocket for pointed instruments having a lining of elastic material, an outer `facing of thin resilient material, a compressible band surrounding the mouth of the pocket, a holder strap for the pocket, said holder strap comprising two members, one of which being longitudinally movable uponthe other member, and means for securing the movable member to the stationary member.
3. A protective pocket for pointed instruments including an 'inner lining of elastic material, an outer facing of resilient material, said inner lining having spaced teats integrally formed therewith, the bottom row of teats being of 'the greatest length, and the said rows of teats diminishing in length from the lower rows thereof to the upper rows arranged adjacent the mouth of the body. f
4. A protective-pocket forpointed instruments kincluding an inner liningof elastic material, an outer facingof resilient material, said inner lining having spaced teats integrally formed therewith, the bottom row of teats being ofthe greatest length, the said rows of teats diminishing in length from the lower rows thereof to the upper rows arranged adjacent the mouth ofthe body, and
each of said teats having its end formed with a depression. l l
5. A protective pocketfor yieldably sustaining pointed instruments having` an inner lining 0f elastic material and an outer facing of comparatively thin resilient material, spaced teats upon the inner face of the lining, and each of said teats having its end formed with Va depression.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
