JAMES M. BOBINETTE, F WILLIAMSON, WEST VIRGINIA.
GAME-CUE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES M. RoBINn'rrn, citizen of the United States, residing at Wil liamson, in the county of Mingo and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Game- Cues; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention oomprehends improve ments in game cues, such as are used in playing pool, billiards, bagatelle, et cetera, and has for one of its objects to provide a spring or mechanical one of this nature which shall be of extremely simple construction, cheap to manufacture and very practical.
Another and more specific object of the invention is to provide a one including a butt, a stem, spring means for forcing the butt and stem away from each other, and latch mechanism carried by the butt, whereby the spring means may be thrown into operation when it is desired to make a shot.
The invention also aims to generally improve cues of this nature to render them more useful, practical and commercially desirable. v
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certion novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cue, Fig. 2 is a fragmentary 1ongitudinal sectional view, Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the plane of line 3-3 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the plane of line 4i4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken on the plane of line 55 of Fig. 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates the butt of my improved cue, 6 the stem thereof, and 7 a sleeve being rigidly secured to the butt and surrounding the inner end of the stem. A
Serial No. 797,965.
withis secured to the outer end of the butt by the fastening members 10 which extend through said arms and thread into the butt. This block is formed with an axial opening 11 which is rectangular in cross section and with a transverse slot or opening 12 which extends at right angles to the open- 1ng l1 and which is also rectangular in cross section. A latch 13 slides through the openlng or slot 12 and is formed with an elongated slot 14 which registers with the opening 11 in the block. One end of the latch is extended angularly, as indicated by the numeral 15 and has attached thereto a thumb screw 16, the shank of which passes through an opening 17 in the sleeve 7. A peripheral chamber 18 is formed in the block 8 and is adapted to receive the angular portion 15 of the latch when said portion is formed inwardly, and the butt 5 is formed with a chamber 19 for a similar purpose. A flat metal spring 20 is secured at its outer end to the butt, and has its forward end extended into engagement with the inner side of the portion 15 of the latch, whereby said portion is normally forced outwardly into engagement with the sleeve 7. u
A bar 21 is secured at one end to the stem 6 by means of a pin 22, and extends longitudinally through the sleeve 7 and through the opening 11 formed in the block. A pin 23 is carried by the outer end of the bar and prevents said bar becoming disengaged from the block. The butt 5 is formed with a longitudinal recess 24 to receive the outer end of the bar, and a helical spring 25 is coiled about the bar between the stem 6 and block 8. One edge of the bar is formed with a series of notches 26 and a pair of notches 27 and 28, the walls of which are adapted to engage the latch 13.
When it is desired to set the cue, the thumb screw 16 is forced inwardly so as to disengage the latch 13 from the bar 21 and the stem 6 is then forced inwardly, compressing the spring 25 within the sleeve 7. When the desired tension has been placed upon the spring, the pressure is removed from the screw 16, and the spring 20 forces the latch into locking engagement with one of the teeth 26 or the notch 27. After the cue has been properly aimed, itis only necessary to force the screw 16 inwardly so as to disengage the latch from .the bar 21 in order that a shot may be made.
From the foregoing description taken 1n connection with the accompanying drawlngs, it will be seen that I have provided a very snnple and practical mechanical one which may be easily operated, and which will make it possible to play a game of pool of parts may be made without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A game one including a butt having a longitudinal recess formed therein, a block secured to said butt having intersecting axial and diametrical openings, a stem, a bar connected at one end to said stem and projecting at its other end through the axial opening and into the longitudinal recess, said bar being formed upon one edge with a plurality of teeth, a latch slidably mounted in the diametrical opening in the block and formed with a longitudinal slot adapted to be moved into registration with the axial opening to permit sliding movement of the bar therethrough, an angular extension on said latch, a spring disposed between said butt and said angular extension for holding the latch normally in looking engagement with the teeth of said bar, a spring coiled upon the bar and disposed between the stem and the block, and a stop pin secured in the end of the bar slidable in the longitudinal recess adapted to engage the block to limit the outward move ment of the bar and stem under the influence of the coiled spring.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
