To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JENNIE M. BODENSIEK, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalids Corsets, is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved corset which is intended for the use of women invalids who cannot bear any pressure of the corset on the body and abdomen, the corset adapting itself to the body and permitting easy breathing, and a free motion and expansion of the abdomen without any annoying pressure and pains; and for this purpose the invention consists of certain details of construction and combinations of parts which will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective front-view, Fig. 2, a perspective rear-view, Fig. 3, a sectional front-elevation showing the abdomir al bandage, Fig. 4, a vertical transverse section of my improved invalids corset, on line 4, 4, Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section, on line 5, 5, Fig. 3, drawn on a larger scale.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the dawings.

Referring to the drawings, corset which is closed at the rear and provided with front-stays a that are laced by a lacing string 6 that is tied at the lower front-end in the usual manner. At each side of the rear-stay a the corset is formed of vertically-arranged sections or inserts d of elastic webbing conforming in shape to the general contour of the corset so that there is an equal elasticity in all directions, the corset being also provided at its front, adjacent to the front-stays, with similar elastic sections cl, which converge toward the lower ends of the stays a, triangular gussets being provided between the upper portion of the elastic sections and the stays. By the action of the elastic sections, the improved corset is enabled to fit easily to the body and give sufliciently for every motion of the same without exerting any disagreeable or painful action on the body.

The corset is further provided with an interior abdominal bandage e at its. lower front-part which is attached to the rearof which the following 0; represents a parts of the corset and which has for its object to support the abdomen. In the embodiment shown in the drawings, the bandage e is formed of two sections of elastic webbing that are attached at their rear-ends to the sides of the corset and connected at the front-ends by flat hooks and eyes e or other non-pro ecting fastening devices, so as to exert no bulging action on the front-part of the corset. The upper edge of the bandage is below the waist line, and the lower edge is above the lower edge of the corset. The under or inner-sides of the front-edges of the abdominal sections e have applied to them layers e of felt or other suitable soft material by which the pressure on the abdomen is equalized and an easy fitting of the bandage obtained.

To the front-part of the corset are applied the usual straps and hose-supporters.

My improved invalids corset has the advantage that it can be worn without annoyance or pain by stout invalid women, owing to the elasticity of the corset and the elastic abdominal bandage; and further, that the corset can be adjusted to the exact conditions required by the body, and that owing to the elasticity of the parts no objectionable pressure or discomfort is exerted on the body and abdomen of the wearer.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

In an invalids corset, the combination with a corset comprising a central rear stay, front stays, fastening means for said front stays, continuous uninterrupted elastic inserts adjacent to and at either side of the said rear stay, extending uninterruptedly from the top to the bottom edge of the corset, shaped to conform to the contour of the corset to give an equal elasticity to the same at all points, triangular gussets at either side of the said front stays, having one side secured to the said stays, extending from the top edge of the corset to a point above the lower edge of the corset, and one side inclined from the said top edge to the stay, and continuous uninterrupted elastic inserts secured to the inclined sides of the said gussets, and to the lower part of the said front stays, and extending uninterruptedly from the upper to the lower edge of the said corset, of an abdominal bandage composed of two elastic sections, each attached at its rear edge to the inner rear part of the corset between the rear elastic inserts and the forward elastic inserts, said bandage being provided with suitable fastening -means and be ing wholly within the corset and having its lowest edge above the lowest edge of the corset, and its upper edge below the waist line of the corset.
