Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept..` 7, 1915.
Application med July 18,1914.` semina. 851,705.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTONIO SAvAREsE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Combination IroningsPad, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a device for treating sadirons during use, by means of which the iron may be polished, waxed and rubbed to render its pressing surface clean and smooth.
It further consists of such a device which can be folded up for packing and transportation.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail one mechani# cal form embodying the invention, such detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing-Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device, showing it unfolded. Fig. 2 represents a section on the line --m in Fig. 1. Fig. v3 represents a perspective view of the polishing block with its fabric covering open. Fig. l represents a perspective view of such block ready for use.
Similar numerals Of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawing, the reference numeral 1 indicates a backing or cover which may be formed from leather, paper-board or any sheet substance capable of being folded. A receptacle, 2, in the form of a paper-bag having preferably a movable closing Hap, 3, is secured to said cover near one end of thesame, and a cake or slab, 4L, of wax and comminuted asbestos is inclosed in said f bag. A shallow tray, 5, is secured to the cover adjacent the bag, and a flat slab or block, 6, is adapted to fit in said tray. Said slab or block is preferably formed from a mixture of pumice or silex, silicate of soda and a small quantity of oxalic acid, about two per cent. (2%). Said slab has a sheet, 7, of cheese-cloth or similar textile material embedded in it, midway between the top and bottom faces of the slab and having the edges of the fabric extending at all sides to form flaps, 8, which can be folded around the slab and brought together at the center of one face of the slab to form a knob, 10, by means of which it can be held. A slab, 11, of asbestos, is secured to the cover adjacent the tray, and the slabs and tray are secured to the cover at such relative distances that the cover may be folded to have the slabs and tray superposed.
The wax-slab is preferably formed from a mixture of wax and comminuted asbestos, which latter adds to the consistency of the wax, and such wax-mixture can be and preferably is impregnated with some kind of perfume.
In practice, the sadiron can be-rubbed or other spots, and the pad formed from the slab of abrading material may be held by the knob formed from the gathered fabric and be rubbed upon the surface of the sadiron, whereby such surface is cleaned and polished. During use of the iron, the latter can be rubbed on the asbestos pad and be kept clean and smooth, and the asbestos pad can be employed as a stand or rest for the hot iron. When not in use, the cover can be folded to protect the slabs and pad, and folded covers may be stored with their contents secure and ready to use whenever desired.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed for the mode herein explained. Change may therefore be made as regards the mechanism thus disclosed, provided the principles of construction set forth, respectively, in the following claims are employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pad device for flat irons, a continuous flexible backing, a wax slab, a closed receptacle completely inclosing said slab, the bottom of said receptacle being secured to said flexible backing, and a block of asbestos also secured directly to said backing, the latter having an extension adaptable to fold over and overlap said backing when said asbestos is folded so as to be superimposed upon said receptacle.
In a device of the character described, the combination of a strip of flexible material, a receptacle secured at one end of said strip, a slab of wax inclosed within said reupon the wax-slab to soften any rust-spots f ceptacle, a tray secured to said strip a short n@ Y distanceaway from the receptacle, a slab of whereby the operative faees are prevented abralfilng material secured in said tray and from Contact with each other.
bloc of asbestos material secured upon sai' strip a short distance away from -tle tray,- ANTONIO SAVARESE' the, space between the parts permitting the Witnesses: latter to be superimposed upon each otherl C. D. MCVAY, with the exible material between the parts H. M. LAFFERTY.
