Description

G. H. NOBBS Nov. 10, 1931.
WAXING AND POLISHING DEVICE Filed Aug. 8, 1928 Patented Nov. 10, 1931 GEORGE E. NOBBS, F WATERTOWN, MASSACHUSETTS WAXING AND POLISHING- DEVOE Application med August s; 192s. serial No'. 298,298.
My invention relates to waxing and polishing devices for use upon floors and the like and it has for its object toprovide an improved instrument of this class which will e of simple, inexpensive and eiicient construction and which can be operated or used to apply Wax to and to polish floors and the like expeditiously and at comparatively small cost.
To these ends I have provided a ioor waxing and polishing device or instrument comprising a metal container o-r vessel adapted to receive within it a previously heated element, such as a body of hot water, and tothe exterior of which is applied a textile cover or jacket which is heated and pressed against the floor or the like by the water within the container. The container or vessel is m`ade With a fiat bottom to conform to the surface to be waxed and polished, and to that portion of the cover or jacket extending across this flat bottom is applied a quantity of wax, which may be in paste form, that is heated and absorbed into the fabric of the cover or jacket so that when the device is seated upon a ioor and moved about the hot wax is spread about over the same and evenly distributed.
The cover or jacket is preferably removable so that after applying the wax to the floor the jacket used for that purpose may be removed and a clean jacket or cover substituted and used for polishing the floor after application of the wax as described.
A waxing and polishing device or instrument constructed and operating upon this principle is very efficient; its cost of production is comparatively small and the cost of operation is reduced to a minimum.
Other features and advantages of my invention are hereinafter pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of a floor waxing and polishing instrument constructed in ac cordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the felt pad hereinafter referred to.
The container or vessel 1 of my improved Wax applying and floor polishing device is herein shown as a hollow sheet metal vessel o f cylindrical shape comprising a circula-1' side wall 1, a top Wall 2 and a flat bottom wall '3. vThe top wall 2 is made with a filler opening or port 4 normally closed by a removable filler cap 5 having threaded engagement with .a nipple 6v forming part of the top wall 2 and surrounding the opening 4. The top Wall 2 is also made with a bracket or extension 7 to which is pivoted, at 8, the lower end of a handle 9 by means of which the device is manipulated.
In closing the bottom wall 3, the side wall 1 and the marginal portion of the top wall 2, is a cloth bag-like jacket or cover 10 made at its mouth with an annular pocket 11 within which is arranged a draw-string 12. This jacket is secured in position upon the container by means of the draw-string l2 which is drawn tight and its ends tied together as shown in Fig. 1.
Within the jacket 10 between the bottom wall 3 of the container and the bottom of the jacket is arranged a circular felt pad 13 that is formed with a multiplicity of perforations 14 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.
When the above described device is to be used for waxing a. floor or the like the filler cap- 15 is removed and the container is filled with a body of hot Water 15 after which the filler cap is replaced. Then j wax paste is spread over the bottom portion of the acket 10 and the heat from the water within the container melts the same so that it soaks into and saturates the cloth jacket and also the pad 13.
The device is then placed upon the floor and slid back and forth over the same by means of the handle 9. The body of Water 15 provides sulicient Weight to hold the device down against the floor with the desired pressure thus relieving the operato-r of this work, while at the same time heat is radiated downward through the holes 14 tothe bottom of the jacket 10 by which it is transmitted to the Hoor and the Wax that is spread upon the latter.
Thus the container with its heated jacket and pad operates to distribute the wax very uniformly over the oor with little eort on the lpart of the operator, the heat supplied by t e hot water serving to raidly evaporate the solvent used in the wax us shortening 4 5 the time required fordrying the wax before polishing.
Two covers and two pads 13 are furnished with each container, one cover or jacket and its pad being used exclusively in lo appl ing the wax and the other cover an its pad ing used exclusively for polishing the floor after the wax has been applied. Therefore, after the application of the wax to the floor the cover and pad used in applying the wax are removed and the other un-waxed cover and pad are applied to the container and the device used to polish the a plied wax.
The use of hot or boiling water or the dual purpose of furnishing Weight or pressure and also heat is advantageous because all liability of burning the jacket, pad or floor is obviated, While the weight of the water makes it unnecessary for the operator to exert downward pressure on the handle either during the waxing operation or during the polishlng operation.
Furthermore, when the device is not in use and the container is empty it is light and easily handled or transported.
In practice I have found that one filling of the vessel or container with hot water is usually suicient to su ply the heat required for waxing and poli ing a house floor of average size.
- What I claim is:
A device of the character described oomprising a vessel made from sheet metal adapted to receive within it and to hold conined therein a body of hot liquid, said vessel being made with a filler opening and havin a at bottom; a removable closure for sai opening; a handle pivotally connected at one end with the top o said vessel; an apertured felt pad occupylng a position against and covering the outer side of said iat bottom; a baglike fabric cover Within which said vessel and said pad are inclosed, said cover being made adjacent its mouth with a pocket for a drawstrlng, and a draw-string within said pocket. ,j
