GEORGE A. HELSON, 0F PETERBOROUGH, ONTARIO, CANADA.
l/VET DUST-COLLECTOR.
Application filed October 29, 1913.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE ARTHUR HEL- SON, of the city of Peterborough and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wet Dust-Collectors, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to apparatus in which dust laden air is treated for the purpose of precipitating the dust and purifying the air and particularly to apparatus adapted for use in street cleaning apparatus of the type shown inCanadian Patent No. 152,568, issued Dec. 16, 1913. In such apparatus it is found that under certain conditions dry dust collectors are not sutlicient to do the work efiectively and wet collecting must be resorted to. The problem then is to devise means for treating the dust laden air with water which will be simple, effective and which will not clog up.
I attain my object by means of apparatus in which the dusty air mixed with a spray of water is blown, not sucked, into a tank containing water in which the dust is deposited as mud and from which the air is led to be further treated if necessary, the whole being constructed in detail substantially as hereinafter more specifically described and claimed, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in sec tion of my improved collector; and Fig. 2 a plan View of the same.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the diiferent figures.
1 is a blower of any suitable type, 2 being the fan contained therein. The dust inlet to the blower is through the center of one side as usual and it is supplied with a tan gential discharge pipe 3. This discharge pipe leads into the water tank 4, the water level in which is slightly below the opening of the discharge pipe. In order toinsure the discharge from th pipe striking the surface of the water I provide the battle 5 suitably inclined and located opposite the mouth of the pipe 3.
6 is an upper water tank located above the blower 1. This tank may be kept supplied with water in any suitable manner but I prefer to supply it with water from the tank 4. For this purpose I provide the pipe 7 leading from the one tank to the other, the suction inlet being directed well be- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 8', 1915 Serial No. 798,051.
low the normal water lever of the tank 4:. In this pipe is located a small pump 8 preferably of the rotary type which may be driven in any suitable manner. An overflow pipe 9 extending from the upper tank into the lower tank enables me to maintain a constant level in the upper tank. From the upper tank there leads a pipe 10 which discharges into the casing of the blower 1. Preferably this pipe enters through the suction inlet of the blower and discharges onto the hub of the fan. The water being drawn oil by centrifugal action is beaten into a spray and discharged with the dust laden air through the discharge pipe 3.
To insure the thorough mingling of the air and water I prefer to beat the latter into spray. I therefore provide within the pipe 3 a series of baffles 11 to incline alternately in opposite directions. These di there is usually some dust remaining unsettled, which cannot well be settled by the wet treatment, I lead the pipe to a chamber 15 closed by a fabric screen 14 which allows the air to pass through but effectively keeps back any dust or dirt which drops into the bottom of the chamber whence it may be periodically removed. Of course any other arrangement providing a screened outlet for the air will answer the purpose of my invention.
By blowing the air and water together into the tank and then dry filtering the air, I attain exceedingly satisfactory results not in my experience attained with any system using suction.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a dust collector the combination of a blower provided with a suction inlet; means for introducing water into the blower; a discharge pipe for the blower; a water tank into which the discharge pipe leads; and baflies in said discharge pipe close to the blower and inclined alternately in opposite directions whereby the water is beaten into fine spray and'intimately mixed with the dust-laden air passing through the apparatus.
2. In a dust collector the combination of a blower provided with a suction inlet; means for introducing water into the blower; a discharge pipe for the blower; a
water tank into which the discharge pipe leads; bafiles in said discharge pipe close to the blower and inclined alternately in opposite directions whereby the water is beaten into fine spray and intimately mixed with the dust-laden air passing through the apparatus; and an inclined baffle at the mouth of the discharge pipe adapted to direct the discharge toward the bottom of the tank.
3. In a dust collector the combination of Toronto this 23rd day of Oct. A. D. 1913..
