Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3i, 1915.
Application filed October 3, 1914. Serial No. 864,849.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. AsoH- more, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Oshkosh, inthe county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have'invented new and useful, Improvements in Bench-Clamps and Planing-Vises, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a bench clamp.
and planing vise, the primary object being to provide a single device which may be mounted upon a carpenters bench or upon plane from being operated throughout the length of the board, when planing either a narrow edge or a broad side of the board.
The invention consists vinthe features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had. to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device mounted upon a bench for use in holding a board to permit of planing one of its edges; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the device in use for holding a board when planing one of its broad faces; Fig. i is a top plan View of the same; and, Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a work bench upon which the base 2 of my improved clamp device is mounted, though it is to be understood that the said base may be mounted upon a heavy board or plank, which might prove more convenient for outdoor work or the like. The base 2 is secured to the bench chiefly by means of a clamping bolt member 3 which has the squared portion 4 of its head engaged within the correspondingly shaped opening 5 in the base and projects downwardly therefrom through i the vertical bench opening 6. An adjustable hand wheel 7 is mounted upon the protruding end of the bolt member 3 beneath a washer 8 which the said wheel is adapted to force against the under face of the bench in securing the base 2 to the upper face of the same. A plurality of wood screws 9 are also mounted within openings 10 provided in the base for engagement within the bench toprevent rotation of the base upon the clamping bolt member.
The base 2 is adapted to be mounted at one end of the bench equidistant from its longitudinal side edges and it has a pair of laterally. spaced hinge lugs 11 and 12 formed upon its inner edge. The transversely extending body portion 13 of the movable member ll of the device is provided. medially with a hinge lug 15 which is adapted to be pivotally mounted between the lugs Y11 and 12 of the base upon the transverse pivot pin 16, which latter extends horizontally through the hinge lugs of the baseand movable member and is detachably mounted therein. Parallel arms 17 and 18 project outwardly from the ends of the body portion 13 of the movable member. The ends of the arms 17 and 18 are provided terminally with inwardly projecting, alining extensions 19, and 20, the former being provided with an enlargement 21 be planed disposed uppermost, as shown particularly in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing. In this position the board is adapted to have its broad side faces engaged by the fixed and movable jaws of the clamp, and it should be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, that the clamp or movable member may be arranged at a slight angle to the horizontal so that the jaws of the same may engage the board mounted therebetween at such a height above the bench that it will be secured most rigid, whereby lateral movement of the boardwill be prevented without permitting the jaws of the clamp to prove obstructions to the movement of the plane (not shown).
The hinge lugs 11 and 12 of the base 2 are provided upon their outer longitudinal faces withsharpened ribs 25 and 26 respectively whose active edgesare adapted tobe en gaged with the'end of a board, which'may be" placed flat upon the bench for the purpose of planing either of'its broad faces, as;
shown particularly in Figs. 3 to 5 inclusive,'it being understood that the movable member '14 must be'thrown back into its inoperative position overlying the base before the board can be engaged inthis mannor with the-ribs and 26. The lungs lugs 11 and 12 thus present limitingshoulders for preventing horizontal movement 01 the board being planed and the ribs 25 and 26 constitute securing teeth for preventing ver- ,t ical movementfloi' the board, these'teeth beingdisposed at'only a slight distance above the'upper face of the bench so that they may be engaged with a comparatively thin board without presenting obstructions. {By the use of the clamp member Li and the securing teeth 25 andj26 in' the difli'erent operations or; planing aboard, the plane maybe'operat'ed freely'throughout the entire length of the board, in either case, without danger .When theclamp member 14 is'in itsine operative position, its jaws jwill "project outwardly from the adjacent end of the bench, whereby the arms 18 may lie flat upon thebase 2.. The jaws thus willinot be'dis posed in'the path otmovement of the plane 'andmayalso serve as a vise'forsecuring a vertically disposed board, or thelike,
while it is being split longitudinally by the use of afrip-saw, orits upper end is being planed. I It should also be apparent thatthe member may be removed for use in other capacities ,by withdrawing the securing pin 16, should this prove desirable in pract ce; I.
What is claimed is: glai Aidevice of the class described comprising a base, spaced lugs on the inner edge thereotand having teeth projecting forwardly therefrom, a clamping member pivotally connected with said lugs and adapted to be swung forwardly in alinement with said baseandrearwardly in superimposed relation thereto, said clamp including spaced parallelarms, one of said arms being extendedfinwardly and terminating to provide'a fixed jaw, a movable jaw carried by the other of said arms, and means for'adjusting said jaw with respect to the fixed jaw. QKA device of the class described comprising a base, a pair of relatively spaced hinge lugsdormed upon one edge of the 'basegsharpened securing teeth formed upon said lugs to project outwardly therefrom, a movable clamp member including a transversely extending body portion arranged in parallel relation to the said edge of the base bearing the lugs, a hinge lug formed medially upon the said'body portion and being rotatably mounted between the base lugs, a pair of parallel arms projecting outwardly from the opposite ends of the body portion of the clamp and being disposed outward with respect to the base lugs, a fixed jaw provided upon one of the said arms inwardly thereof, a movable jaw provided upon the other arin adjacentto the fixed jaw, and means by which the movable jaw may be adjusted with relationto the fixed jaw.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presenceoftwo'witnesses.
