' ROB ERT H. nowuwe. Improvement ih Chubks for Wood-Lathes.

CHARLES WINSLOW, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT m chucks FoR-woon-L rHEs.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 115,179, dated May 93, 1871.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. Dowmue, of Fenton, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Gang-Chucks for VVood- Lathes; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a partof this specification, in which my chuck is shown in perspective.
This invention has for its object the construction of a chuck for holding any desired number of wooden slats while being turned on their outer edges to the form required for brackets, to be gluedon the top ends of the side rails of bedsteads, or other uses; and it consists in the peculiar construction of a cruciform head and guide provided with set-screws for V holding the Work, mounted on a mandrel received atone end in a socket in the headspindle, and centersat the other end on the tail-spindle of the lathe, and operated as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing, A represents a square bar of iron, tapered at a to permit its insertion in the socket of the live-spindle of an ordinary Wood-turning lathe. The other end of the bar is centered to receive the pointed center of the tail-spindle. B is a cruciform casting secured to the mandrel A near the taper. Each arm of the casting has a socket, b, to receive one end of a board or slat. O is a casting of similar shape, except that each arm or jaw is slotted, as at 0, to receive the edge of the timber, which is secured by a set-screw, d, on the side of each arm, and is also secured to the mandrel.
The four pieces of wood being secured to the arms, they may be quickly turned on their outer edges to the shape of the bracket shown at D, or to any other configuration of their outer edges, in a fraction of the time and cost of doing it with a scroll-saw and finishing by hand with sand-paper, as has been heretofore the method of manufacturing these articles,
securing uniformity in execution and a smooth finish.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction and arrangement of the mandrel A and cruciform heads B and 0, provided with set-screws d or their equivalents, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ROBERT H. BOWLING.
