EXTENSION-TABLE.

T0 @ZZ who/nz if; may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN STEIN, a subject f the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in extension tables and has for its object the construction which will eliminate the use of extra leaves, which have heretofore been provided in tables of this character.

1t is also the object of this invention to provide a table which will be readily and quickly adjustable and which, whether extended or contracted, will present the same appearance.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a table constructed in accordance with the present invention, illustrating in dotted lines the extension thereof. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the table, with its extensions, contracted or located within the table, the table top being removed to illustrate the construction. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken along line 3 3 of Fig. 2, with the table top in place. Fig. e is a plan view of the table extended. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken along line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section through one end of the table, illustrating the same extended in full lines, and in dotted lines the positions of the elements in opening and closing the table, the full line positions of the elements being that assumed thereby just prior to the contracting or closing of the table, or just prior to the completion of the table top. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the locking sleeves cooperating with one of the collapsible auxiliary legs of the extension of the table. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view of the pivot of the extension.

Reference being had more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates a plurality of table legs provided with the frame 11 at their upper terminals. which frame carries a stationary and rigid table top 12, which extends beyond said frame as illustrated in Specification of Letters Patent.

Figs. 1, 3 and 5. The transverse ends 13 of the frame 11 are removable and carry the extensions of the table. The frame 11 has a pair of parallel bars 14 extending longitudinally therein, which carry tracks 15, while the longitudinal members of the frame 11 carry the tracks 15a. Each transverse end 13 of the frame 11 is provided at its terminals with the rails 16, upon which are mounted the rollers 17. The rollers of one rail 16 of each end 13 engage the track 15a while the rollers of the opposite rail 16 of the saine end 13 engage the rollers 15, as illustrated in Fig. 5. ln this manner it will be seen that the rails 16 of the opposite ends 13 interlock or slide one beside the other, that is to say, in parallel plane.

T his construction provides a reciprocable extension at each transverse end of the table, which extension constitutes a frame composed of two rails 16 and the removable end piece 13. Each end piece 13 provided with ay .handle 18, whereby the same may be moved, thus reciprocating the extension.

Each extension, just described, has a pivot plate 19 upon each rail 16, to which is pivoted a plate 26. These pivot plates 19 and their cooperating plates 2O are alined transversely of the extension. A. table top 21 of less width than the distance between the rails 16, is carried by the plates 20, and consequently is pivotally carried by the frame or extension, composed of the end piece 13 and the rails 16. This table top 21 is adapted to constitute an extension of the central portion of the pivotal top 12, and its upper surface is arranged to rest flush therewith when the table is open. Each extension table top 21 has a leaf 22 pivoted to each side thereof, which is arranged to rest in the same horizontal plane as the top 21 when the table is extended, and rest upon said top 21 when the table is collapsed or closed. By reference to Fig. 6, it will be seen that when the table is closed or collapsed the leaf or top 21, and the leaves 22 carried thereby, will hang suspended from the pivots between the

19 and 20, and the extension composed of the rail 16 and the end piece 13 may be reciprocated to a position under the table top 12 carrying the top 21 and the leaves 22 therewith. ll hen the table is opened, the rail 16 is withdrawn from under the table top 12, and the top 21 swung about its pivots until it rests upon the end piece 13. The leaves 22 may then be swung to rest in the same horizontal frame as the top 21, after which the rails and end piece are moved toward the 'table top 12, until the leaves 22 and the extension top 21 abut the adjoining edge of the table top 12. When in this position they form a perfect eXtension of the table top 12 and rest in the same horizontal plane as the said table top 12.

Theilocation of the pivots between the extension top and the rails 16, which pivot comprises the

19 and 20, is such that the extension top 21 may be swung into the plane ot' the table top 12, and at the same time rest between the rails 16 and the end piece 13, as clearly illustrated in F ig. 6. A leg 23 is pivoted adjacent to each end of the end piece 13, and is located adjacent to the cooperating rail 16. This leg is provided with an extension 241, pivoted thereto, whereby the leg may be collapsed, and located between the rails 16 when the table is contracted or closed. To rigidity this leg when in use, the lower terminal or the leg 23 is provided on each side thereof with a slot 25, in which operates a gravity sleeve 26. 23 and 24 the gravity sleeve 26 i5 elevated, thereby permitting the extension 24 to be swung to rest flush against the leg 23. l/hen the extension 241 forms a continuation of the leg 23 the gravity sleeve 26 will drop, engaging the abutting terminal of the leg and extension 211, thereby providing a rigid structure. Each extension :trame composed of the rails 16 and end piece 13, is provided with two legs, though of course one or more legs may be used if desired.

When the table is closed or contracted, it is necessary to retain the legs 23 in an elevated position, which locking of the legs 23 prevents the dropping of the leaves 22, and prevents the extension table top 21 from swinging. ln order to accomplish this, each leg 23 is provided with a hook lug 27, adj acent to its upper terminal which coperates with the gravity catch 28. When the leg 23 is collapsed, that is to say, when the eXtension 211 rests flush against the leg 23, the same may be swung upwardly, after the table top 21 and its leaves 22 are swung to a position between the rails 16, where the hook lug 27 will be engaged by the gravity catch 28, which will retain the leg in its elevated position, and prevent vthe displacement of the remaining elements of the eX- tension.

The length or' the pivot plate 2O is such that when the extension top 21 and the leaves 22 are swung outwardly they will rest slightly above their cooperating rails 16 and in the plane of the table top 12. lt will be noted also that the pivot is so located that when the extension top 21 is in its operative position, the same will project beyond the end piece 13, a distance equal to the projection of the table top 12 over the plane 13. llfhen the table is closed or contracted, the two extension frames composed of the rails 16 and end pieces 13, will slide one within the other, thus forming a compact and simple construction.

W hat is claimed is:

r1`he combination with a. table comprising legs, frame, and top, of an extension frame, comprising an end piece and rails secured thereto, mounted for reciprocation into and out oi' the table frame, the end piece of the extension frame constituting the end piece oi the table frame, a pivot plate pivoted to the inner side of each rail between the ends of said rail, an extension table top secured to said pivot plates and arranged to be suspended thereby between the rails when the extension frame is within the table frame, said extension table top being adapted to rest upon and extend beyond the end piece aforesaid when swung 'from between the rails leaves pivoted to the edges of the table top, and collapsible legs carried by the eX- tension frame.
