PUZZLE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUsUs'r RnIBsTnIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Puzzle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of the invention is to provide a new and nnproved puzzle, which is simple in construction, easily manipulated and arranged to afford. an enjoyable pastime and to require considerable skill for properly solving the puzzle.

In order to accomplish the desired result, use is made of parallel guideways spaced equal distances apart, buttons, one for each guideway and slidable thereon, and sighting means intersecting the said guideways at a right angle and diagonally to permit of posi tioning the said buttons on their guideways so that no two buttons are in alinement along the said sighting means.

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indirate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a plan view of the puzzle; Fig. 2- is a cross section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing the solution of the puzzle.

A plate or sheet A is mounted at its margin on a support B held in the bottom of a box C, and on the said plate A is arranged a series of guideways D spaced equal distances apart. The guideways D are prefer ably in the form of slots cut in the plate A, and on each guideway is mounted to slide a button E, the head of which is preferably in the form of a miniature War vessel, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. On the face of the plate A is arranged a sighting means, preferably in the form of heavy lines F and lighter lines G, the said lines F being disposed at a right angle to the guideways D and intersecting the same, and the said lines F are spaced distances apart corresponding to the distances between adjacent guideways D. The sighting lines G extend diagonally to the right and to the left and pass through the points of intersection of the said guideways D, and the said right angle sighting lines F.

be moved along the guideways D from the right to the leit or from the left to the ri ht, and. in order to properly solve the puzzle it 1s necessary that the buttons be so positioned on their guideways D that no two buttons are in alinement with the said sighting means, that is, the lines F or G, it being Uiderstood that each button E is stopped with its center at the intersection of a line F with the corresponding guideway D.

By reference to Fig. 1, it will be noticed that several of the buttons E are in alinement in a direction along some of the lines F and in a direction along some of the lines G, and consequently the position ofthe buttons E as shown in Fig. 1 is not a correct solution of the puzzle. When, however, the buttons E have been placed in position, as shown in the diagrammatic view in Fig. 3, then the puzzle is solved as no two buttons are in alinement along either the sighting lines F or the sighting lines G.

The puzzle shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and can be readily manipulated. The working of the puzzle is an enjoyable pastime and it requires considerable skill on the part of the manipulator to properly solve the puzzle.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A puzzle, comprising a plate having horizontally arranged parallel guideways spaced equal distances apart, buttons, one for each guideway and slidable along the same, and sighting means intersecting the said guideways at a right angle and diagonally to permit of positioning the said buttons on their guideways so that no two but tons are in alinement along the said sighting means.

2. A puzzle, comprising a plate provided with horizontally arranged parallel slots forming guideways spaced equal distances apart, buttons, one for each guideway and slidable along the same, right angle sighting lines on the said plate and intersecting the said guideways at a right angle thereto, the said lines being spaced equal distances apart, and diagonal sighting lines extending diagonally through the points of intersection of the said guideways and the said right angle sighting lines.

3. A puzzle, comprising a box, a support held in the bottom of the box, a plate mounted at its margin on said support, the said plate being provided with horizontally arranged slots parallel with each other and forming guideways spaced equal distances apart, buttons, one for each guideway and slidable along the same, right angle sighting lines on the face of the said plate and intersecting the said guideways at a right angle thereto, the said right angle sighting lines being spaced distances apart corresponding to the distances between adjacent guideways, and diagonal sighting lines on the face of the said plate and extending diagonally to the right and to the left, the said diagonal sighting lines passing through the points of intersection of the said guideways and the 5 said right angle sighting lines.
