ToaZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARTIN HANsnN, a subject of the King of Norway, and re siding at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bottle stoppers and similar devices, and the object thereof is to provide a bottle stopper or closure device comprising an ordinary cork or plug having improved means whereby it may be withdrawn or pulled after it has been forced into the neck of the bottle and in the operation of opening; said bottle; a further ob-. ject being to provide an improved device or construction of the class described which, in addition to being used as a bottle stopper, may also be used for the purpose of closing jugs, jars and all other vessels of this class.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the neck portion of a bottle provided with my improved stopper; Fig. 2 a side view indicating the stopper in dotted lines only and showing the stopper pulling means in full lines; Fig. 3 a plan view of the stopper as indicated in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 a side view showing the stopper in section, but showing only part of the pulling means; Fig. 5 a view similar to Fig. 4: but showing all of the pulling means, the section being on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 a side view indicating the stopper in dotted lines and showing in section one step in the operation of forming and applying the pulling device which I employ, the section being on the line 66 of Fig. 7 and. Fig. 7 a sectional view on the line 77 of Fig. 6.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a the neck of a bottle and at b an ordinary cork or stopper having my improved pulling means 0.
The pulling means or device consist of a central spiral coil 0 of wire which is passed into the cork or stopper from the top thereof and two similar wire coils which are also passed into the cork and which are integrally connected at their outer ends by a yoke 0 which forms the puller proper, and in the operation of passing the coils 0 into the cork they interlock with or engage the central coil 0 as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
In the practice of my invention, the cork b is first provided with a spiral bore d which may be formed in any desired manner, after which. a device similar to that shown in Figs. 6 and 7 but consisting of one part only is employed for passing the central coil 0 intothe cork through said bore After the central coil 0 has been passed into the cork, spiral bores to receive the coils c are formed in said cork and into which said coils o are passed, the means for doing this being shown in Figs. 6 and 7. The device for passing the coils 0 into the, cork consists of a die block 6 composed of a bottom member 6 and a top member 6 and between which are secured two spiral forming dies 7 which are cylindrical in form and provided each with a spiral groove f through which a wire or wires 0 are adapted to be passed, and the outer end portions of the grooves f are formed in the outer sides of, and longitudinally of the parts f as shown at F.
The coils 0 are formed from parallel wires connected at their outer ends as hereinbefore described, and these wires are fed through the die composed of the parts 6, e and f by means of parallel rollers g, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 7, and in the operation of passing the parallel wire members through the parts 7 the spiral coils 0 are formed, and as this operation progresses the said spiral coils are fed into the spiral bores in the cork, previously formed as hereinbefore described, and when the said operation has progressed to the point indicated in Fig. 6, the die device is detached and the yoke-shaped portion 0 is bent down fiat on the cork and compressed thereon as shown in Fig. 1, and said cork is ready for use, and when it is desired to pull the cork or withdraw it from the bottle, jug, or other vessel in connection with which it is used, all that is necessary is to raise the yoke 0 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, in which position thereof a pull thereon will withdraw the cork or stopper in the usual manner.
It must be borne in mind that the bores into which the coils 0 and 0 are passed are first formed in the stopper after whch said coils are passed into said bores, and said coils are passed into said bores by the same means or device by which said coils are formed, but the invention described and claimed herein is not limited to any particular means for passing the coils 0 and 0 into the cork or stopper nor to any particular method of so doing, and any suitable means or method of accomplishing this result may be employed.
My invention is also not limited to the idea of passing both of the coils 0 into the stopper at the same time, and said coils 0 may be passed into the stopper in the same manner as the central coil 0 in which event the outer ends thereof will be connected to form the loop or yoke 0 Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stopper for bottles and other vessels, said stopper being provided with a.
central spiral coil and two laterally arranged spiral coils which interlock with the central spiral coil and have connected outer end portions.
2. A stopper for bottles and other vessels, said stopper being provided with a central spiral coil the axis of which is the axis of the stopper, and two laterally arranged spiral coils which interlock with the opposite side portions of the central spiral coil and the outer end portions of which are provided with connected projecting parts.
3. A stopper for bottles and other vessels, comprising a cork having a central spiral coil arranged axially thereof and two laterally arranged spiral coils which engage the opposite side portions of the central spiral coil and the outer ends of which are connected and formed into a loop or yoke.
