CLOTHES-SPRINKLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Au 2d, 1915.
Application filed February 17, 1915. Serial No. 8,875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LLEWELLYN D. CARTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Sprinklers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes sprinklers designed especially for use either with compressed air or hydraulic means and consists of a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
1 illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view longitudinally through the upper portion of the spraying device and tank. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a slight modification of the invention. Fig. 4 is a sectional view through the modified form. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 1 designates a tank having a filling aperture 9 therein and adapted to contain water to be sprayed and from which a pipe 2* leads to the air pump 2, whereby a pressure of air may be introduced within the tank to cause the water to be forcibly ejected through a pipe 8 to the interior of the cylinder 3.
The spraying cylinder 3 has a plug 4 fitted in a threaded opening in the end thereof and which plug has a jet opening controlled by a needle valve 10 and has a forwardly projecting spraying or deflecting projection 4P against which the stream contacts as it is forced through the opening. A spring 11 bears yieldingly against the inner end of the needle valve and serves to normally hold the same seated.
A rock shaft 7 is mounted in an opening in the cylinder and is provided with a recess or cut away portion 7* forming a shoulder which is adapted to engage a shoulder 10 upon the shank portion of the needle valve, and a suitable handle 5 is secured to the rock shaft and forms means whereby the latter may be rocked within its bearings for the purpose of causing the needle valve to be thrown back under the tension of the spring ll away from its seat in the opening in the lug.
In Fig. i of the drawings, 1 have shown a slight modification of the invention adapting the same for use in connection with a direct pressure of water and in which the pipe 8 communicates with the interior of the cylinder 3 and in which the needle valve 10" is mounted and adapted to seat and close the opening t in the plug 4*, and a spring 11 bears yieldingly against the needle valve and serves to hold the same normally seated. A handle 5 controls the valve 7* which has a shoulder for engagement with a shoulder 1O formed upon the shank portion of the needle valve. In this form, the pipe 8 is connected direct with the hydraulic pipe through which water may be forced without the use of the air pump to put the same under pressure.
By the provision of a pumping apparatus embodying the features of my invention, it will be noted that a simple and eificient means is afforded whereby, when the valve is opened, a spray of water may be forced in the manner shown against the deflecting projection of the plug, thus separating the water into fine mist.
What I claim to be new is A clothes sprinkler comprising a valve casing having a branching pipe adapted to be connected with a source of liquid supply, a spraying member secured to said valve casing and provided with a jet opening, said spraying member having a projecting portion disposed at an inclination and against which a stream of water is adapted to contact as it is forced through said jet opening, a spring-pressed valve mounted in said casing and provided with a shoulder, a valve mounted in an opening in the Wall of the In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my casing and said pipe and having a transsignature in presence of two Witnesses. verse recess, the marginal edge of Which is adapted to contact With a shoulder upon the LLEWELLYN CARTER valve to impart a longitudinal movement Witnesses:
thereto against the spring bearing against W. D. FREEMAN,
the valve. J. W. MATTHEWS.
