To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JOHN S. Lovnmovron, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Hoboken, Hudson county, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Transom-Gpeners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
My invention relates to builders hardware and has special reference to transom operating devices.
une object of my invention is to provide a simple, durable and relatively inexpensive device of the aforesaid character that shall be easy to manipulate and adapted for mounting the transom either to swing on a central pivot or on a pivot at or near its lower edge.
Other objects and advantages of my in vention will be set forth hereinafter, and in order that my invention may be thoroughly understood, 1 will now proceed to describe the same in the following specification, and then point out the novel features thereof in appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a door and transom equipped with a transom operating device arranged and constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same parts with the door frame shown in section. Fig. 3 corresponds to Fig. 1 but shows the transom mounted to swing about a substantially central pivot instead of a pivot located near its lower edge. Fig. corresponds to Fig. 2 but illustrates the arrangement of Fig. 3.

The transom is mounted and operated by apparatus which embodies my invention and which comprises a pair of stationary brackets 16 and 17, each having a through slot 18 and a bifurcated lug 19; removable pivotal brackets 20 and 20 an operating lever 30 and a link 10.

preferably set in recesses provided in the door frame as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and the bifurcated lugs 19 extend outwardly from the base plates of the brackets in both directions and are provided with perforations 21 and 22.
The brackets 20 and 20 have angle plates 24: which are secured to the transom near its opposite ends as shown in Fig. 1, and have lugs or ears 25. The pivotal bracket 20 is furthermore provided with a lug or ear 26 and is connected by a pivot pin 27 to the bifurcated upper end 11 of the link 10. The lug or ear 25 of bracket 20 extends into the slot 18 of the stationary bracket 16, the bracket 20 being pivotally connected to the stationary bracket by a pin 28, which extends through the perforation 21 in the bifurcated lug 19 and through a correspond- The bracket 20 is similar to the bracket 20, except that the lug 26 is omitted, and it is similarly mounted on the stationary bracket 17. The link 10 is interposed between the pivotal bracket 20 and the operating lever 30 and has a bifurcated lower end 42 which is connected to the lever by a pin 43. The lever is pivotally supported at 31 on a stationary bracket 32 which has a slot 33 and bifurcated lug 34:. It is also provided with a toothed rack portion 35 which is adapted to be engaged by a pawl 35, the position of the lever and of the transom being thus maintained as desired.
The lever 30 has an extension 36 which is connected to it by a pin and slot connection and is formed with the pocket 37 as clearly shown in Fig. 5. The arrangement of parts is such that when the extension is pushed into place with the outer end of the lever extending into the pocket 37, it acts as a rigid part of the lever. But when it is pulled outwardly it is free to swing as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5 of the drawings, so that it will not extend so far out from the door frame.
Springs 50 are preferably mounted on the uprights 11 of the door frame below the stationary brackets 16 and 17 and are adapted to cooperate with projections '29 of the brackets 20 and 20 when the transom is swung into its open position. The springs also assist in closing the transom and compensate to a greater or less extent for the increased lifting power necessarily applied to swing the transom closed from its wide open horizontal position.
The link lO'may be adjusted to perfect the operation of the device, after the mechanism is'attached to the transom and door frame, since it comprises a section o 'having left and right hand threads at its ends. A nut 40 is provided for locking the section :0 after the link has been adjusted.
The utility of the second perforation 22 which is to be found in each of the stationary brackets 16 and 17 will now be explained. These perforations are so placed with reference to the outer surfaces of the bracket plates that they lie in the central plane of the transom. When it is desired to mount the transom on a central pivot as shown in Figs. 3 and 4%, the stationary brackets 16 and 17 are mounted in the proper position as here indicated and the brackets 20 and 2O are pivotally supported on the stationary brackets by mounting the pivot pins in the perforations 22 instead of in the perforations 21, the lugs 25 being perforated to correspond to the perforations of the lugs 19.
The operation of the device will be understood from the foregoing description and a brief outline as follows will suiiice: Referring particularly to Fig. 2 and assuming that the transom is partially open as here indicated, the extension 36 of the lever 30 may first be forced into position to constitute a rigid extension of the lever. It then constitutes the handle which may be gripped by the operator and swung upwardly to close the transom. The movement of the lever about the pivot 31 is transmitted through the link 40 to the pivotal brackets 20 and 20. These brackets are consequently swung about their pivots 20 and carry the transom with it. The transom may be set in any desired position by swinging the pawl 36 into engagement with the desired notch of the rack 35.
It is evident that structural variations may be effected within the spirit and scope of my invention, and I intend that only such limitations be imposed as are indicated in the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. A transom operating mechanism comprising a pivotal bracket adapted to be affixed to a transom, a stationary bracket' having means for supporting the pivotal bracket with axis in the plane either of the affixed to a transom, a stationary bracket.

A transom operating mechanism comprising a pivotal bracket adapted to be affixed to a transom, a stationary bracket having means for supporting the pivotal bracket in two difierent relations, 7 a collapsible operating lever havingv an extension connected to it by a lost motion connection and adapted to act either as arigid part of it or to be swung freely with respect to it, and a link connecting the lever with the pivotal bracket.
4. A transom operating mechanism com prising a pivotal bracket having a perforated lug and adapted to be afiixed to a transom with the perforated lug extending at right angles to the plane of the transom, a stationary bracket having a bifurcated lug and a slot between the parts of the lug, said bifurcated lug having perforations and adapted to cooperate withthe perforated lug of the pivotal bracket, a pivotally supported operating lever and a connecting link between the lever and the pivotal bracket.
5. A transom operating mechanism comprising a pivotal bracket having a perforated lug and adapted to be affixed to a transom with the perforated lug extending at right angles to the plane of the transom, a stationary bracket having a bifurcated lug and a slot between the parts of the lug, said bifurcated lug having perforations and adapted to cooperate with the perforated lug of the pivotal bracket, a pivotally supported operating lever and a connecting link between the lever and the pivotal bracket, said cooperating lugs being adapted to receive a pivot pin constituting an axis for the transom either in the plane of its outer surface or in a central plane as desired.
