GEORGE I. WIGGINTON', OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO KALAMAZOO LOOSE LEAF BINDER COMPANY, OF KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
` TEMPORARY BINDERf OR LOOSE-SHEET HOLDER.
Application filed August 27, 1914'.
To all whom t may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. Wiesin- ToN, citizen' of the United States, residing at Kalamazoo, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders or Loose-Sheet Holders, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to improvements 1n temporary binders or loose sheet holders.
My present improvements relate particularly to the adjusting mechanism.
I have especially designed my improvements for embodiment in temporary bind ers or loose sheet holders of the type shown in U. S. Letters Patent to Bushong, Serial No. 851,276, issued April 23, 1907. My improvements may, however, be readily adapted to binders considerably modified in general structure.
The main objects of this invention are, first, to provide in a temporary binder or loose sheet holder an improved adjusting mechanism by means of which the binder may be quickly adjusted to permit the insei-tion or removal of sheets or leaves or to secure the sheets within the binder; second, to provide an improved temporary binder or loose sheet holder in which the binding strips may be released so that they may be quickly extended to their full length and also quickly retracted; third, to provide an improved temporary binder or loose sheet holder' having these advantages which is simple and convenient in operation.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detaileddescription to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention` is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a detail view of a structure embodying the features of my invention Specification of Letters Patent.

with the covers extended, the outer walls of the covers being removed.l Fig. II is a detail longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 2 2 of Fig. I, with the covers closed, the covers and clamping members being shown spaced apart. Fig. III is Van enlarged detail longitudinal section on a line corresponding to line 3--3 of Fig. I, showing details of the adjusting mechanism. Fig. IV is an enlarged detail section on a line corresponding to line 1*4- of Fig. I, showing further details of the adjusting mechanism. Fig. V is a detail longitudinal section taken on a line corresponding to line 5-5 of Fig. I.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, the covers are designated generally by the numerals l and 2. The covers preferably consist of rectangular frames 3 having inner walls l and outer walls 5 secured thereto to provide chambers within the covers.
The structure illustrated is provided with clamping bars or guide members G pivotally *mounted on the hinge members 7 projecting on the inner ends of the covers. These binding members are illustrated and described in the Bushong patent referred'to.
The binding strips 8 are secured to the cover 2 at 9 and telescope into the cover l. The binding strips are provided with a cross piece lO having a finger piece l1 disposed through the longitudinal slot 12 in the inner This finger piece is adapted to be folded or collapsed and is shown in its folded position in the drawing. As its details form no part of my present invention, I do not illustrate the same herein.
The binding strips are releasably secured to means for tightening or applying stress thereto and when disengaged or released from this adjusting means the covers may be pulled apart freely or the binding strips retracted into the cover l by means of the linger piece 1l. This adjusting means conlion `on said actuating shaft disposed between the arms ofv said slide to coact with said rack, U-shaped binding strip securing memf bers mounted on said actuating shaft, said shaft being disposed through the arms of said securing members, said binding strips being arranged between the arms thereof, a clamping shaft arranged through the arms of said actuating shaft slide and said securing members and provided with eccentric clamping portions between the arms of said securing members.
